Samsung 2011 Q4 earnings official: $42 billion in sales, $4.7 billion operating profit

It might not be making as much money as the competition in Cupertino , but that doesn’t mean Samsung isn’t raking in cash at an astonishing clip. We reported earnings estimates a few weeks ago, but now it’s official that the firm posted a 5.3 trillion won ($4.7 billion) operating profit in Q4 2011. That represents over a 2 trillion won ($1.8 billion) increase year over year. In all, it pulled in 47.3 trillion won ($42 billion) in sales, thanks in no small part to the over 300 million phones Sammy sold last year. While mobile accounted for roughly 40 percent of company sales and half of its operating profit (2.6 trillion won, or $2.3 billion), its semiconductor business did almost as well, raking in 2.3 trillion won ($2 billion) in profit over the same period. Samsung’s Display Panel business outperformed 2010 — buoyed by strong sales in LED televisions — as sales were up almost 20 percent, to 8.55 trillion won ($7.6 billion). Well the call just finished up, and Sammy provided some prognosication for 2012. It anticipates the mobile business to continue to grow, with LTE and and new market segments (read: Galaxy Note) helping drive sales. TV sales are also expected to remain on the uptick, as Samsung anticipates demand to continue growing due in part to the London Olympics and roll-out of more Smart TVs. Feel free to check out all the numbers giving Samsung reason for its optimism at the source link below. iLid iPhone case doubles as a wallet, keychain

The iLid flips open to reveal a place to stash some credit cards, a key, and some cash. (Credit: Jason Parker/CNET) SAN FRANCISCO–Phones may be on their way to replacing wallets and purses, but we’re not quite there yet. One project that hopes to bridge the technological gap is iLid . Created by Australian natives Darren Inglis and Simon Dunn-Vaughan, the specialty iPhone case has a mostly secret compartment on its backside where people can stash some cash, a few credit cards, and a house key. It may not be a full-on purse or wallet replacement, but for those looking to cut down on wallet clutter, it promises some organizational relief. The product, which ships next month and is on display at this week’s Macworld|iWorld event , began as a project on Kickstarter , a proving ground for ideas of all sizes to get seed money from public investors. After a week of posting their idea on the site the pair raised their goal of $10,000, a total that now sits at $28,261. The two had also invested $20,000 of their own funds into the project ahead of time. Go home at Helsinki’s airport

Relax in the living room. (Credit: Helsinki Vantaa Airport) Even an airline geek like me wouldn’t call an airport “homey.” “Exciting” is a word that I would use and I may even say “comfortable” depending on the airport, but I won’t deny that an airport is the opposite of . Either you’re on way to somewhere else or you still have a flight between you and your own bed. Check in at Helsinki’s airport, though, and you’ll find a new lounge that is trying to bridge that gap. Now open in Vantaa Airport’s Terminal 2, the Almost@ Lounge goes beyond far beyond the utilitarian furniture and simple snacks that you’d find in a standard airline lounge in the United States. Or get yourself a snack in the kitchen. (Credit: Helsinki Airport) Instead, there’s everything passengers would need to complete a modern including a kitchen, dining room, children’s playroom, media lounge, and a office with HP computers. And as you’d expect in Finland, there’s lots of wood, sleek design, and Eco-friendly features. Ice Cream Sandwich on the Transformer Prime: Our definitive verdict

The ICS update for the Transformer Prime is the first update approved by an actual Transformer. No, seriously. (Credit: James Martin/CNET) When the Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime launched in late 2011, the hope was that it would be the first tablet to have and hold Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), the latest version of the Android OS. While the tablet eventually launched with Honeycomb, no other tablet has yet to be released running ICS, so as of this month, it actually is the first. A couple of weeks back, Asus began rolling out over-the-air updates of ICS to Transformer Prime owners in the U.S. We at CNET finally got our Prime unit updated and spent all day poring through the sweet deliciousness that is ICS. The thing about ICS for tablets, though, is that while smartphones previously topped out at Android 2.3, Honeycomb (version 3) has been on tablets for nearly a year now and going from 3.0 to 4.0 just isn’t as huge of a jump. Still, although the changes are minor, they are noticeable. Still plenty to see at Macworld 2012

(Credit: Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET) SAN FRANCISCO–The Macworld expo isn’t what it once was, but you wouldn’t know it from the excitement of both vendors and Mac faithful attending this year’s show. The show started today at Moscone Center North here, and though Macworld no longer attracts the big crowds and big-name vendors it once did, I saw plenty of enthusiastic vendors and showgoers checking out the latest wares for Mac and other Apple products. When Apple stopped presenting at Macworld in 2009, everyone wondered what would become of the show. As Apple’s launching point for new products until 2009, Macworlds of the past often took up two giant rooms at Moscone Center and everyone involved with making Macs, iPhones, and the products that surround them would come for the event. Ever since Apple stopped showing at Macworld and making product announcements on its own, the show has lost some of its magic, but you wouldn’t know that by talking to some of the vendors on the floor. In this slideshow, I give you a taste of what it’s like to walk around the floor from my perspective. I couldn’t take pictures of everything, but hopefully it will give those who have never been an idea of what it’s like to check out the yearly Macworld show in its current state. HP 2311x review: A great monitor? Or simply a cheap one?

The HP 2311x gets you a 23-inch LED-based monitor, 1080p resolution, with HDMI, DVI, and VGA connections all for $180 or less. That's great, but doesn't necessarily make it good. (Credit: Eric Franklin/CNET) When considering a new purchase, the importance of price can’t be understated. Just attaching a low sticker price to a product can make something not even on your radar, suddenly, a must have. If, like me, you were a Steam customer during the holidays, you’ll know exactly what I mean. For large purchases however, functionality takes precedence over price. At least for me it does. I’ve been burned too many times going with the cheaper alternative only to be unsatisfied by the experience it provided. The HP 2311x got a lot of attention on CNET last year from you guys when Amazon started selling it for $180. It’s since dropped even lower. I imagine it’s not just the price that intrigues potential buyers, but also the fact that the monitor doesn’t gimp you on connections. So, is the HP 2311x a great monitor, or simply great for its price? Answers in the full review . Made by Tokyoflash, it features an always-on touch display, as well as an LED backlight, and comes with a spring-hinged mineral crystal lens cover. Though it looks like you need to understand some futuristic language to tell time, it’s actually quite simple. The outside ring features 12 blocks that represent the hour, while the minutes are marked by the 60 smaller dots just inside the ring. There’s even a second set of rings, in case you want to keep track of a different time zone, and you can rotate through the watch’s various functions (date, alarm, and so forth) using the touch display. Normally, the Tokyoflash Kisai Rogue Touch Pocket Watch would cost you $169, but you have a chance to get this geeky accessory for free. There are some rules, though, so please take the time to read them carefully. There will be a test.

Check suspicious objects with Scorp recon robot

Novatiq's Scorp recon robot will get some cool accessories including wire cutters. (Credit: Novatiq) As machines that let first responders look at dangerous objects become increasingly common, Novatiq has started producing a throwable recon robot with the relatively low price tag of roughly $11,300. The military-grade Scorp was announced last year with slightly different specs. At 13 inches long and 7.7 pounds, it’s compact and light enough for backpack portability. It’s also tough enough to be thrown into buildings and dangerous areas, just like the lighter 110 FirstLook from iRobot. The spybot can supply a 360-degree real-time video feed. (Credit: Novatiq) Both machines are remote-operated, roll on treads, and have flippers that enable them to climb stairs, train tracks, and other obstacles. Both can move around for up to six hours on a battery charge. The Scorp can roll at up to 5 mph and receive commands from its wearable controller up to a distance of 1,650 feet. If it loses touch with the signal, it will automatically backtrack until it’s reestablished. Unearthed robot film shows genius of Muppets’ Henson

Do machines have a soul? You'll find out when you watch the film below. (Credit: Video screenshot by Edward Moyer/CNET) The recent Muppets movie no doubt brought Jim Henson back into the minds of many, and a just-unearthed commercial film he did for The Bell System nearly 50 years ago gives a hilarious glimpse of his earlier days–and of the youthful years of computing. Discovered in AT&T’s archives and posted this week to the company’s ATTTechChannel section on YouTube, the 1963 short, “Robot,” addresses the anxiety felt by humans in regard to machines and computers. Chevy giving away 20 cars during Super Bowl

Win it during the Super Bowl: 2012 Corvette GS Convertible (Credit: GM) You could win a Chevrolet Corvette GS Convertible 4LT or one of the 19 other vehicles Chevy is giving away to viewers. Chevrolet is giving away 20 cars and trucks–including Chevrolet Volt, Camaro 2SS, Silverado 150, and a bunch of Sonics and Cruzes–between now and the end of the big game. To win a car, players will need to download the Chevy Game Time app, complete the registration, and receive a unique “license plate.” If your license plate is drawn before the game or in one of the Chevrolet ads shown during the Super Bowl or online post-game, you’ll be a happy fan regardless of which team takes the trophy. But there’s more to this sweepstakes than raffling off cars. By using the app to answer trivia questions during the game, you could win one of 14 vehicles. Questions range from polls on favorite foods to eat during the big game, to quizzes about commercials shown by Chevy or its partners. Each question you answer correctly is another chance to win a new ride. Android Ice Cream Sandwich on a Moto Droid Razr? Sort of

Is this the real thing? (Credit: www.droidrzr.com) Ever since Google officially revealed the Ice Cream Sandwich operating system in mid-October, Android fans have been hungering to try it out on their Gingerbread smartphones. I can’t say I blame them. The OS is bold and beautiful, without too many hiccups and with a few more tips and tricks to try out. Nokia’s Mobile World Congress teaser thin on details

Nokia did e-mail the press with invitations to a press conference on the show’s opening day, February 27, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. local time. CNET will be there to cover it. There are only a few reasons why a company would call a press conference, and that’s usually to launch a new product or service.
