July 4th, 2009

Donald and Jasmine bow to listener pressures and dedicate (almost) an entire episode to Bluetooth. On deck: a description of A2DP Bluetooth technology in detail, some fascinating info about the iPod Touch/iPhone’s partially crippled BT functionality, and product shout-outs for Bluetooth-capable headphones and MP3 players. Also, consider yourselves warned: the hosts spend several minutes discussing the ousted “porn” app that was released in the iTunes App Store last week (not overly explicit). O2 Announces World’s First Interactive 3D Cinema Video Game

July 4th, 2009

Sponsors

3D technology is well on its way to becoming the biggest thing in theater entertainment. A UK company called O2 is deciding to take 3D technology one step further by introducing the world’s first interactive 3D cinema video game. The game is called Asteroid Storm and it will be tested in twenty Vue cinemas through out the UK. In the game, the audience is the controller and has to help steer the spaceship through the dangerous asteroid field. In order to turn the ship, the game instructs certain sections of the audience to raise their hands. For example; to turn right, the right side of the audience raises their hands and to turn left, the left side raises theirs. The audience participation is monitored by two IR cameras that are connected to the gaming server, which means there is no controller is the projection room, nor is the film pre-generated. The game is expected to be run before major 3D films, including Ice Age 3 and Toy Story 3D. [via Register Hardware ]

Packard Bell imedia lineup gets an Acer-inspired refresh

July 3rd, 2009

Packard Bell recently overhauled its logo in an effort to keep up with the times, but are its offerings up to the same task? The new imedia lineup immediately recalls the recently announced M-series desktops from Acer, and that’s no accident . The innards are remarkably similar too, with the top models sporting Core 2 Quad or II X4 processors, a 1.5GB GeForce GT230, HDMI out, Blu-Ray combo drive and a maximum of 8GB DDR3 memory and 1TB of storage. While none of the specs are on the blistering edge of innovation, there’s plenty of power there and keen pricing could make them an attractive proposition. The entry-level Celeron-based units start at ?299 ($490) in the UK. Yamaha HTR-6250BL: Solid HTIB companion, but less impressive on its own

July 3rd, 2009

Yamaha is unique among home audio manufacturers in that its prepackaged home theater systems include the same AV receivers that are offered as standalone units. We received the Yamaha YHT-791BL home theater system for review and were impressed with the included HTR-6250BL AV receiver compared with other home-theater-in-a-box systems, but …

Industrial Style Home Theater

July 3rd, 2009

Many of the classy highly decorated home theater you see would look cluttered compared to this home theater designed by London Audio. The home owners recently purchased this 50 year old ranch style home and transformed it into a modern industrial style home. The biggest room is the basement, which also is now the family’s personal screening room. The room was fitted with a Runco CL-420 projector, which features 1200 ANSI lumens, a 2800:1 contrast ratio, and HD (1280 x 720) resolution. The theater also has a 110 inch screen and a B&W speaker system. To add to the industrial look, the homeowners removed the felt protective covering from the speakers. Not only does this look good for the room, but it enhances the quality of the sound. Instead of lush comfortable theater style seating, the owners decided to go with modern sofa and chairs directly from London. However, the main sitting area is actually a day bed that allows the owners the relax, lay down and enjoy a movie as they fall asleep. [via Electronic House ]

With the deteriorating economy and the decline in projector sales, InFocus has recently announced that they will be making “aggressive” cutbacks in order to keep from going out of business. DIY HD projector hits the right note, sub-€500 price range

July 2nd, 2009

Sponsors

It’s really hard to say how much of a value this DIY HD projector is, given we’re missing some crucial specs like resolution (gotta be at least 720p, right?), contrast ratio, and luminosity. Still, at €500 (about $708 US) for the whole kit, it’s not a bad deal if you planned on spending your weekend doing projects anyway. All the pieces come in four separate bundles — HD optic, light, housing, and electronics — and if you need some handholding (it’s okay, so do we), there’s a German-language instruction manual that’s thankfully full of pictures and diagrams, and even more entertaining, we’ve got a video / picture slideshow of the process done to a playful techno ditty. Check it out after the break. Update : Yup, it’s 1280×768. Yamaha releases neoHD: AV receiver + digital media player hybrid

July 2nd, 2009

Over the last few years, AV receivers have been integrating all sorts of functions necessary for a modern home theater, including video upscaling, media streaming, and video switching. It’s good in some ways, but bad in others; when we reviewed Denon’s AVR-3808CI , we were thrilled about how much we could do with it, but much less excited about how confusing it was to operate. Yamaha’s newly announced neoHD series of products continues to consolidate functionality in your AV receiver, but also focus on ease-of-use, including a graphical user interface with icon-based navigation and the ability to control other devices with IR blasters. (Credit: Yamaha) Yamaha announced three new products in the neoHD line: the YMC-500, YMC-700, and YMC-S21. Yamaha NeoHD–photos The entry-level YMC-500 includes much of the functionality found on a midrange AV receiver, plus advanced ability to control other devices and playback media off its USB port. There are three HDMI inputs, two component video inputs and a single composite video input, and the YMC-500 can upconvert those signals to its HDMI out. In fact, you have to upconvert analog signals because there are no analog video outputs. There are also two digital audio inputs, one optical and one coaxial. Speaker connections are limited to spring-clip connectors, which is disappointing, but we’re assuming that was done to save space on the back panel. …

The Complete Home Theater Experience

July 2nd, 2009

Randy Murray wanted a modest home theater that his friends and family could enjoy. However the attention to detail makes his home theater cozy and also the complete theater experience. Murray devoted his entire basement to create the perfect theater experience. His theater comes with two rows of seating with a comfy recliner sofa in the front row. The 110 inch screen is paired with the JVC DLA-RS1 projector, which features full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution, 700 ANSI lumens, and a 15000:1 contrast ratio. To give his guests the complete cinema experience, Murray also constructed a complete concession stand loaded with cinema candy. He also designed a lobby area and a game room that comes with pinball and a crane game for the kids. All of his guests also receive a complimentary box of Junior Mints. Murray said, “The lobby lets me indulge in the fun side with movie posters, a lighted marquee, movie props and memorabilia, along with the claw and pinball machines. The theater itself is almost a temple to movies—classy and restrained, with no sign of technology or distraction.” [via Electronic House ]

Victorian Style Home Theater

July 2nd, 2009

Sponsors

The Victorian era is known for the highly detailed architecture and classic style. This home owner decided to use the Victorian style and create a theater that could be used for both adult and child entertainment. The theater features many elegant design features including a stone archway and 10 foot wide screen. The floors, walls and all the detail for this room is made from wood paneling. The biggest feature for this theater is the book shelf wall that gives the theater its Victorian look. The bookshelves hold the owner’s vast collection of comic books as well as all his audio and video collections. The designers even made an old library ladder for the owner to climb in order to reach the top shelves. The sound system is completely mounted behind the acoustically transparent screen, which helps reduce the amount of electronics that are seen. The projector selected is the very popular JVC DLA-HD750 , which features full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution, 900 ANSI lumens, and a spectacular 50000:1 contrast ratio. [via Hidden Wires ]
