Buffalo serves up USB-powered portable 3D Blu-ray player in Japan

September 3rd, 2010

Stuck with an ODD-less netbook or laptop, but can’t quite shake the urge to watch a Blu-ray Disc on your next flight? If you call Japan (or you know a good importer), Buffalo has just the solution. The BP3D-PI6U2-BK measures 137- ? 147- ? 20mm, and the operation is pretty simple. Just wrangle an XP / Vista / Windows 7-equipped PC, locate an open USB socket, blow out the dust (optional, but highly recommended) and plug this guy in. Best of all, the unit also supports the boatload of 3D Blu-ray titles that are bound to show up over the coming months, but the privileged of being prepared doesn’t come cheap — it’ll land later this month for ?28,500 ($338). Update : Speaking of importers… White Rabbit Express has this up for pre-order at $350 , along with a slew of other Japanese wares. Huzzah! Toshiba finally dives into Blu-ray 3D with BDX3100 player, offers up BDX1100 if stereo’s not your style

September 3rd, 2010

Seems like Toshiba bit off more Blu-ray 3D than it could chew this year — the Japanese firm’s just announced that the new BDX3100KB will be its first set-top stereoscopic player, never mind the BDX3000 it announced at CES . Still, we’re willing to forgive and forget if the new machine (replete with DivX and MKV playback, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 surround, and instant playback of AVCHD footage from connected camcorders) makes it stateside sometime soon — both it and the relatively boring BDX1100 standard Blu-ray unit are presently slated for a UK release (at unspecified prices) in October of this year. PR after the break. Samsung’s 50-inch 720p PN50C490 3D plasma on sale now for under a grand

September 3rd, 2010

Looking to spoil yourself with a fancy new 3DTV ? Ain’t got the cash to go all-out ? Hello, compromise. Samsung’s 50-inch PN50C490 — which we peeked just a few weeks ago — is now shipping from Amazon, Best Buy and a slew of other local consumer electronic marts if we had to guess. As a refresher, this mid-sized has a 720p resolution, 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, no internet connectivity to speak of, a USB socket, three HDMI inputs, a pair of component jacks and support for the third dimension. It’s up for grabs today at just $989, but you’ll probably want to budget a few extra hundies for that Samsung 3D Starter Kit (not to mention a few 3D Blu-ray Discs). Sony: PlayStation 3 Blu-ray 3D update due in October

September 1st, 2010

Sponsors

Despite what we’d heard before , Sony announced today at IFA that the firmware update bringing 3D Blu-ray playback to the PlayStation 3 will not arrive this month, instead pushed back to October which, we are told, is an entire 30 days away. until then we’ll have to live with the recent MotorStorm 3D game that recently popped up on PSN and a slightly-lower res version of Wipeout . Unfortunately, there still aren’t many movies to watch for the time being, and even the most ardent early adopters may want to wait until Sony rolls out the Michael Jackson’s This Is It - 3D Enhanced Edition and Alice in Wonderland 3D bundles it also announced. For the rest of us, we’ll probably still be firmly planted on the fence by the time the Green Hornet and Spiderman movies mentioned on stage come to disc. Netgear announces NeoTV 550 & 350 HD Media Players plus other networking goodies

August 27th, 2010

This week Netgear made a battery of new product announcements related to entertainment and Powerline networking . On the media side, the NeoTV 550 & 350 HD players look a lot like last year’s Digital Entertainer Elite , minus the 500GB of internal storage and access to VOD services like CinemaNow . Both are however capable of playing a robust list of codecs in full HD from a variety of attached sources like USB, eSATA (in the case of the 550) or SD storage, as well as streaming content from UPnP, DLNA or WMP11 networks. The 550 adds in support for external Blu-ray drives and BD-Live too, all for $219, which should appeal any of the poor souls with an unused standalone drive. Three new Powerline kits — AV 200, AV 500, and AV+ 500 — were also announced to help consumers avoid the pain of stringing Ethernet in every direction. The entry level AV 200 appears to improve on the previous HDXB101 kit by offering the same theoretical 200mbps in addition to push button security enhancements and greener power consumption. The AV 500 kit provides the same and ramps the networking speeds to up to — you guessed it — 500mbps, while the “+” version throws in a pass-through filtered AC socket to avoid sacrificing precious outlets. Priced all below $200, every kit will available by mid November for all the fall networking networking your heart could desire. Peep the galleries and PR below for further details. Sony launches six new DVRs, all write to BDXL and play back in 3D

August 27th, 2010

Well, Sony is a little late to the party on this one, two days behind Panasonic announcing six new BDXL-writing DVRs . But, the company is definitely still on the BDXL bleeding edge, announcing its own suite of six devices, ranging from 320GB to 2TB of internal storage and all but one offering dual tuners. When those tuners have filled that storage they can all write to 100GB BDXL discs, which we’ll remind you one more time are not backwards compatible with current Blu-ray players. Finally, all six of them support 3D playback, because if you’re already jumping on the BDXL bandwagon you surely have your 3D well and truly dialed in by now. Sony isn’t saying just how much these six will cost, but the premium model with 2TB of storage ships in Japan on September 25. For the rest you’ll have to wait until October 22. Sony delivers a new midrange 3DTV line with the NX810 series (updated with hands-on)

August 26th, 2010

Sony’s finally taken the wraps off its latest televisions for the US market, carrying the NX810 model number. Available in 60-, 55- and 46-inch sizes next month, these give a 3D spec bump (and around a $200 premium on the MSRP) to the existing NX800 series of Edge LED lit HDTVs that came out earlier this year. Like the NX800, these feature a slick monolith design, built-in WiFi, widgets and an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust the picture in changing room conditions, but other than the 3D-readiness (and coupons for free Blu-ray 3D movies and PSN games, though it looks like you’ll have to pay for the glasses on your own) it’s hard to find any differences on paper. Football fans looking for a new 3D set may be tempted to jump on one and can check the specs and prices after the break, but we’ll probably wait around to see what a Google TV might bring to the table — and at what price . Update : We got a chance to check out a few of these 3DTVs this evening at Sony’s open house in NYC. As per usual, the BRAVIAs were stunning and made us want to save up some cash to get one of these into our living room. And yes, we put on the 3D glasses and watched an assortment of clips. It was like those cute little bears in the snowy picture below were at the swanky event with us. Go on, you know you want to look at the cuddly things, err screens… Gallery: Sony NX810 3DTV eyes-on Continue reading Sony delivers a new midrange 3DTV line with the NX810 series (updated with hands-on) Sony delivers a new midrange 3DTV line with the NX810 series (updated with hands-on) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 25 Aug 2010 16:41:00 EST. Get Him to the Greek Blu-ray includes a free streaming copy — of a different movie

August 25th, 2010

Universal’s added a new wrinkle to persuade people to buy Get Him to the Greek on Blu-ray — throw in a copy of an entirely different movie. Sure, during the MTV Video Music Awards we imagined not having to watch Russell Brand was a feature that should be included more often, but we didn’t expect to see it tucked in among these other Blu-ray exclusive extras — karaoke, the Pocket BLU iPhone remote control app, social BLU access, Mobile-To-Go support for taking bonus content with you and keyboard support. Anyone who buys the flick between September 28 and March 31, 2011 can also gain access to one of the following movies streamed to the player over BD-Live or directly to their mobile phone: Uncle Buck , Dazed & Confused or Life (Eddie Murphy & Martin Lawrence, not David Attenborough .) The flicks are notable not only because they appear to have been randomly chosen, but also since they’re not available on Blu-ray yet. Unlike The Office , there’s no promise of HD resolution here so the quality is still in question, but really, what Blu-ray release couldn’t use an extra dose of John Candy? Check out all the details and extras in the press release after the break. Panasonic launches six new BDXL-compatible DVRs, the media you’ll need to feed them

August 24th, 2010

Sponsors

The BDXL format offers 100GB on a single-sided disc, and while that sounds great for archiving content, we’re a little leery about Hollywood adopting it to stuff even more deleted scenes on our discs. Why? Because no current Blu-ray players can read the things, and we can’t say we’re keen to buy another. We’re getting a little closer to that kind of support with Panasonic’s new Diga-series recorders. There are six in total, all shipping on September 15 and each offering dual tuners used to stuff HDDs ranging from 500GB up to 2TB. From there, content can be dumped onto BDXL discs, so Panny is also announcing availability of its first 100GB, single-sided, write-once media. Naturally BDXLs can also be played back on the things and, in all but the smallest two models, can even be played in 3D. We’re still warming up to 3D, Panasonic, don’t push too much change too fast. Samsung Blu-ray players won’t play Warner, Universal movies after firmware update, require a rollback

August 23rd, 2010

As annoying as continuous Blu-ray player updates are, usually having the latest one is the best way to play more movies. Unfortunately the opposite was the case for Samsung ( again ) with the v2.09 update posted recently for its 2009 BD-Px600 line of players. Forum posters on CNET and AVSForum report the upgrade blocked them from playing Universal and Warner Bros. movies, which conveniently lock up after displaying the title image. Samsung’s rolled back to an older firmware version (v2.07) on its support site that should fix things for now, but with some users still having problems downgrading, all they can do is wait for the next update, whenever that arrives. Some help line reps have said the new version should arrive “in a couple of weeks,” but it’s not like you really wanted to watch Clash of the Titans or Book of Eli right now anyway, right? Home Theater Equiped With Automatic Masking

August 19th, 2010

Sponsors

Not all movies are created equally. Most movies are created in one of several different aspect ratios. The problem though is that this means that the movies are compressed or stretched by the time they get to the consumer market. The best way to fix this problem is to have your own theater that can adjust to each aspect ratio. That is what this owner did when they decided to turn their new addition into a dedicated theater. The 12 foot wide curved screen is paired with a Digital Projection TITAN 1080p-250 projector. This model can display 2000 ANSI lumens, a 5000:1 contrast ratio, and full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution. The owner’s library is controlled with a 200 disc Blu-ray changer and the projector and screen are programmed to adjust accordingly to each one. The screen comes with motorized masking capabilities, which moves the black bars so that they fit with the image. This helps make a nicer looking display. [via Electronic House ]

Panasonic intros 42- and 50-inch 3D Viera GT25 plasma sets, its first with 2D-to-3D conversion

August 17th, 2010

If you thought you could crawl in a corner and wait for this 3D onslaught to pass, you may be camped out for some time to come. Panasonic is following up on its CES introductions with a new pair of 3D plasmas for the gaming set, the Viera 3D GT25 range. Said series is debuting with a pair to choose from, the 50-inch TC-P50GT25 and the 42-inch TC-P42G25. The latter is Panny’s first-ever 42-inch Full HD 3D plasma, and as you’d expect, both of these guys will require active shutter glasses in order to operate. As for specs? You’re looking at a 1080p panel, 600Hz sub-field drive, 24p playback and (a company first) 2D-to-3D conversion that may or may not be the answer to all of life’s problems. Or maybe they’ll just do what Sony and Samsung have already been doing. The duo should be on retail shelves by the end of this month, with the little guy going for $1,699.95 and the big(ger) guy for $2,099.95. George Lucas officially announces Star Wars on Blu-ray in 2011

August 15th, 2010

As rumored , all six Star Wars movies will be released together on Blu-ray in 2011 for the 35th anniversary of the release of A New Hope . George Lucas personally announced the set on stage at the Celebration V event, and showed off a deleted scene from Return of the Jedi that will be included (embedded after the break.) While the “highest picture and audio quality” and extensive special features are promised, what won’t make it to Blu-ray are the original versions of the movies; Lucas told the New York Times that only the special editions will be included, since restoring the original versions in high enough quality would cost too much. No word on price, release date or any plans to release the films individually, but if you can stand living in a world where Greedo shot first then this will certainly be on next year’s shopping list. Samsung’s 3D gala: 65-inch UN65C8000, 50-inch PN50C490, and BD-C8000 eyes-on

August 12th, 2010

Earlier today, Samsung pulled the curtain off (quite literally, might we add) its newest 3DTVs and the world’s first portable 3D Blu-ray player at its New York City press conference. We were able to slap on a pair of the 3D specs and spend a bit of time staring at the (admittedly amazing) 65-inch LED 3DTV, the fairly mediocre sub-$1,000 720p 3DTV as well as form some early impressions of the Blu-ray player. We’ve got you covered with some pictures below, but mosey on past the break to check our two pennies on each of the new products. Samsung shows off portable, HTIB 3D Blu-ray player options and the biggest LED 3DTV yet

August 11th, 2010

Sponsors

We had no idea that the Blu-ray players Samsung showed off at CES would just be the first of a steady stream rolling out this year, and today in New York it’s showing off the latest set of 3D capable hardware — many of which have already shown up on retail shelves. The $499 BD-C8000 is the first portable Blu-ray player that can handle the new 3D discs; while the 10.3-inch screen is 2D only, it folds WiFi, 1GB of memory, HDMI 1.4, a 3 hour battery and all of Samsung’s DLNA and widget technology into its very netbook-looking shell for you to take somewhere that has a 3D-ready display. Though that’s already shipping on Amazon, we’ll have to wait until October to see the $1,799 HT-C9950W 7.1 theater in a box system, specifically designed (& priced) to match those ultra-thin 9000 series displays (and their sweet touchscreen remotes ). Speaking of LED edge lit 3DTVs, Sammy also mentioned it’s ready to ship the biggest of the bunch with the 65-inch UN65C8000 (compare that to Panasonic’s 65-inch VT25 plasma ) which missed the original July launch projection but is already popping up at a few sites for pre-orders at a price as much as $1,500 below its $5,999 MSRP. Gallery: Samsung 3D Blu-ray player, HTIB and HDTVs While those fill out the high end of the product line, more frugal buyers of course have the option of selecting older models that are dropping in price, but there are a few new displays and players (that we’ve seen before ) for them too. Samsung’s finally officially launching the 50-inch PN50C490 we saw last month that does 3D on a flat panel display in 720p for less than $1,000 . Right now, taking it from 3D capable to 3DTV is still an expensive proposition, but we’ll wait and see if any new promotions throwing in the starter kit — updated with a few new Blu-ray 3D exclusives including Dreamworks Animations’ How to Train Your Dragon and two IMAX 3D flicks, Shrek series coming soon — for free turn lookers into purchasers. Check the gallery for more pictures and the press release after the break for more specs and pricing information. Home Entertainment Projection Study Focuces on 1080p Projectors

August 4th, 2010

TFC Info announced today that they have completed their 2010 Entertainment Projection Study. The report was conducted to study why are being purchased instead of flat panel TVs. The study started back in 2008 and went all the way up to 2010. One of the key parts of the report showed that 1080p HD (1920 x 1080) resolution displays are prefered over all other resolutions for theaters. This could very easily be due to the fact that Blu-ray players and game consoles use the 1080p resolution. However a recent trend that has been found with 1080p is that their sales have been dwindling, which opens the market up for more low priced, more competitive to be introduced. “Right now average Joes may not yet perceive a front projector as an option, because of their preconceived ideas of form factor. With the proper education they can be made to buy the device that most closely matches their needs and wants (including price) for entertainment even when it doesn’t’ resemble a traditional television,” states Tanya Lippke, TFC Info manager of survey market research. “For those targeting the consumer market, this study enables you to see beyond what the customer says he wants and put a strategy in place that gives the customer what he does not yet know he wants.” [via EFY Times ]

WD TV Live Plus gets reviewed, lauded for value

July 31st, 2010

After being announced in early June , Anandtech recently put the Western Digital WD TV Live Plus through its paces and discovered the Netflix enhancement works as advertised. Like many Netflix-enabled devices though, the TV Live comes up short compared to the full PC experience since access is limited to only the Instant Queue. Its presence also sacrifices firmware hackability — a quality which previously made up for the WD TV Live’s lack of versatility as an HTPC. The ability to move, copy, and manage locally stored media files via the interface, on the other hand, was praised as a unique advantage over competing models — exciting, we know. Sadly, video quality was docked as being “significantly less than the HTPC counterparts they’ve seen so far.” However, it’s possible this could be improved in the future via firmware updates, since its Sigma Designs processor features noise reduction and deinterlacing algorithms that strangely aren’t currently enabled. File format-wise, DVD ISOs worked flawlessly, while Blu-ray ISO and some WMV video formats experienced issues that users may want to read up on before buying. Gripes aside though, Anandtech was still willing to place it “around the top of the list” for media player devices, thanks to its wide file compatibility and robust features. For more details, hit the review source link. WD TV Live Plus gets reviewed, lauded for value originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 31 Jul 2010 11:07:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds .
