Mitsubishi HC6800 Projector Review

March 10th, 2010

Sponsors

One of Mitsubishi ’s theater projectors is the HC6800 . This model features an impressive 30000:1 contrast ratio, 1500 ANSI lumens, and 1080p HD (1920 x 1080) resolution. Today, the writers from Theater Magazine released their review of this projector. The first thing the writers comment about is the design. The HC6800 comes with a slightly curved chassis with recessed connection panel that is hard to reach if you mount it to the ceiling. The writers put the projector through a number of image quality tests and the only concern that they had was with the black levels. They found that the HC6800 could not go below black, which makes adjusting the image difficult. The writers were happy with the HC6800’s noise level. The 20 dB noise level is quiet enough to keep from being heard during movies. The final conclusion about the HC6800 was, “Overall, the Mitsubishi produces a pleasing picture on most sources. Even with the auto iris engaged, dark, low-contrast scenes are hazy enough to be distracting. In a direct comparison with the Epson, the latter’s superiority in shadow detail was painfully obvious. But things aren’t quite that simple. Even at roughly half the price, the Mitsubishi’s resolution of detail was noticeably crisper than the Epson’s. Resolution alone isn’t quite enough for me to push it over the top. Dark scene performance and contrast are too important to me. But with its very attractive pricing (apart from a rather high lamp-replacement cost), respectable performance on most program material, and striking detail on the best sources, the Mitsubishi just might work for you.” [via Theater Magazine ]

Sony unveils 3DTV release dates and pricing for Japan

March 9th, 2010

Sponsors

Kicking off an expected repeat flood of 3DTV info over the next few days (Samsung and Panasonic both have events scheduled over the next couple of days) Sony has revealed pricing and shipping information for its new televisions and related accessories in Japan. The new sets share that sweet/ominous monolithic style of the already available NX800 series (also announced today in Japan, along with fellow 2D-only HX700 and DVR-packing BX30H televisions,) with the edge-lit LED LX900 bringing the entire 3D package. With IR emitter built in and two pairs of RealD active shutter glasses, all you’ll need to add is a source to the 60-, 51-, 46- and 40-inch models, ranging in price from ?580,000 ($6,444) to ?290,000 ($3,222.) Even if the TDG-BR100 / TDG-BR50 3D glasses (also available as an accessory for ?12,000 ($133) or so) aren’t on your face this WiFi-connected abyss of entertainment will look back into you, using face tracking to detect if someone is sitting too close and warn them to move back, as well as dimming and eventually turning off the screen if you leave the room or simply looked away from the TV for an extended period. Want to get the full 3D effect with the LED backlit HX900 and edge-lit HX800? Expect to purchase the glasses and TMR-BR100 IR emitter (?5,000 or $55) separately, or just live a 2D lifestyle and know the 3D is there if you ever want to upgrade. Feel free to wander through Sony Japan’s machine-translated website for more specs and prices of these June & July scheduled displays or alternatively, wait a little while, enjoy the trailer embedded after the break, and we should get some find out U.S.-specific details soon that will likely be considerably easier on the wallet . Samsung’s 2010 3DTVs priced from $1,700 to ridiculous and everywhere in between

March 9th, 2010

Enjoy your CES peek at Samsung’s ultrathin 9000 series LED-lit LCD HDTV , with its touchscreen, video displaying remote control (also available as a $350 add-on for the 7000, 8000,and 750 series televisions) and 3D capability? That’s good, because bringing the 55-inch UN55C9000 in April will cost you a cool $6,999 (the thrifty can slum it with the 46-inch version for $5,999.) Still, if you’re just looking to jump in on 3D without spending the max money, the cheapest model available at first will be the standard LCD LN46C750 available in May. In between, there’s all manner of LED (most of them listed above, both with and without 3D capabilities) or old-school CCFL backlit LCDs plus a healthy lineup of plasmas arriving over the next few months, so with a note that grabbing 3D Blu-ray player and display at the same time will net a couple free pairs of active shutter glasses and a copy of the Monsters vs. Aliens 3D Blu-ray, check Samsung’s site for each type to see what your budget can handle. Hitachi CP-DW10N Projector Review

March 6th, 2010

Sponsors

One of the latest to be released by Hitachi was the CP-DW10N . This projector features 2000 ANSI lumens, a 400:1 contrast ratio, and WXGA (1280 x 800) resolution. Recently, the writers from PC World released their review of this short throw projector. The writers were really impressed with the projector’s short throw distance. This allowed the projector to display up to a 120” display from only 7 feet away. This makes the projector ideal for cramped rooms or for educators who want to have the projector out of their eyes. After looking that the projector they notice the wide selection of connection options. They were happy to see that the projector came with HDMi as well as the other standard connections. After setting up, the writers noticed that the projector produced a lot of noise that could be distracting to some people. To make matters worse if you turned up the speakers to overcome the fan, the audio would start to distort and cause problems. But even with these problems the writers did note that the image was very detailed and the quality was sharp and clear. The final comment that was made was, “Hitachi’s CP-DW10N is a convenient projector for smaller business meeting rooms thanks to its short-throw lens, crisp picture quality and reasonably high widescreen resolution. It may be a little loud at its default settings, but if you can bear to run it in low brightness mode it becomes quite an attractive package.” [via PC World ]

Epson EH-TW4400 Projector Review

March 3rd, 2010

Sponsors

One of the latest HD projectors to be released in the UK is the Epson EH-TW4400. This projector features 1600 ANSI lumens, a 130000:1 contrast ratio, and 1080p HD (1920 x 1080) resolution. Today, the writers from Pocket Lint released their review of this projector. After un-boxing they noticed that this is a fairly big device. The projector measures 17.7” x 5.4” x 14.2” (W x H x D) and unfortunately only comes with a white finish. This means that it will be pretty hard to make this projector blend into the theater. However, the writers do mention that those are the only two real problems they have with the TW4400. They note that the image quality was amazing and provided lots of detail and sharp, clear images. In the end, the writer stated, “This high-end projector produces near-immaculate pictures that are studded with realism; from close-up detail and skin tones to rich blacks and anti-blur tech, only its bulky size and bulkier price tag are cause for concern.” [via Pocket Lint ]
