Christie is happy to announce that they are the official content sponsors for the 2012 Yeosu Expo. As a sponsor, Christie’s Roadie HD+35K projector was selected to be the model used in the Expo’s signature multimedia night show. The device is capable of displaying 32500 ANSI lumens, a 2000:1 contrast ratio, and 2K HD (2048 x 1080) resolution. The night time show will be held outside against the natural backdrop of the Yeosu Sea. The centerpiece will be the Big-O, which measures 47 meters high and is the world’s largest water curtain. The water curtain provides a screen for the projector to display on. “Christie HD+35K are wonderful. They’re bright and offer superior quality. We’re getting a brightness level of more than 200 nits, which is more than what we expect. Even under strong wind conditions which affect the water screen, we’re still getting the clarity and the exact image focal point,” comments Guillaume Duflot, chief of operations & technical director, ECA2. “We have an excellent ongoing relationship with Christie, having collaborated with them on many projects in many parts of the world including Singapore and China over the last five years. As a company, they’re ultra-responsive and offer products of the highest quality.” [via Christie ]

No Terminator-style overlays in first batch of Google Glasses

Vic Gundotra, Google’s senior vice president of social, wearing prototype Google Glasses. He said they were functioning when this picture was taken. (Credit: Rafe Needleman/CNET) You know what sucks about visiting Google? Seeing the Google Glasses but not being able to try them yourself. Thanks a lot, Vic. But we are, slowly, learning more about this project. In particular, the prototypes that are appearing in the field, on TV, and in tantalizing interviews with online journalists are not capable of displaying the full-on, in-your-face type of augmented reality that 15 million people have seen in Google’s demo video (and all the spoofs ). While Google+ chief Vic Gundotra didn’t say much about the Glasses during an interview this morning, a later discussion with another spokesperson confirmed that the popular prototype model, as seen on Gundotra as well as Google X Lab founder Sebastian Thrun in a Charlie Rose interview , shows information above the wearer’s usual line of sight, “about where the edge of an umbrella might be.” “It’s still too early to know what the functions and UI will be,” I’m told, but apparently it’s the “simple inte… [Read more] Related Links: Oakley eyeing Google Glass rival First app for Google’s Project Glass: Sharing photos The problem with augmented reality: Tablets and targets Low Latency No. 20: What are you looking at? This Tesla coil gun will shock you

Forget about those paltry tazers and stun guns. (Click to enlarge.) (Credit: Rob Flickenger) If electricity pioneer Nikola Tesla designed a weapon, it very well might look like Rob Flickenger’s Tesla Gun . The self-described “mad science” enthusiast dreamed up a Tesla rifle after reading the graphic novel ” The Five Fists of Science ,” which features a cover image of a young Tesla wielding several weapons with a built-in Tesla coil . Flickenger tapped “Seattle’s many hackerspaces” to help design and build the Tesla coil cannon over the course of many months. The high-voltage gun balances seriously dangerous science and an array of everyday electrical components capable of firing off 20,000 volts of hair-raising power with a simple click of a trigger. Sony Vaio laptop Ivy Bridge upgrades spotted

(Credit: Sony) Add Sony to the list of PC makers embracing Intel’s third-generation Core i-series CPUs. According to CNET UK , the Vaio S series is getting updated CPUs, with the E moving into new screen sizes. The Vaio S currently only lists updated quad-core Ivy Bridge processors, as the dual-core versions have not been released by Intel yet. The previous iteration of the S Series was designed to be slim and portable while still packing in enough power to tackle any task you could throw at it. The same principles are kept in this new refresh, but they’ve been upgraded in some key areas for 2012. Crucially, they’ve been given a processor upgrade to bring you the latest Intel Ivy Bridge processors, for some models at least…Sony hasn’t been specific on the other models but it’s likely that Intel’s lower-end Ivy Bridge Core i3 and i5 processors will be on offer, although they haven’t been officially unveiled yet. While the lower-cost Vaio E series is adding 15.5 and 17.3-inch display models to the current 13-inch version. Build a ring light for less than $20

(Credit: Parker Maimbourg) A resourceful videographer, Parker Maimbourg, has managed to build a continuous ring light for just $20. The setup consists of a cheap, circular LED lamp ($10), an AA battery holder ($1.99), and an unused hotshoe salvaged from an old flash unit. A continuous ring light is typically used to provide even illumination for portraits and closeups and usually costs at least a few hundred dollars. Basically, Maimbourg rewired all the LEDs on the lamp to a separate battery holder, which will be mounted on the camera’s hotshoe. Next, he cut a hole through the center of the circular lamp enclosure to fit his lens, spray-painted the whole setup black for that professional feel, and voila! But before you run off to the nearest hardware store, do note that you’ll need some tools like a dremel and a soldering iron, plus a lot of patience to pull this off. Runco LS-100d Projector Review

One of the many short throw to come from Runco is the LS-100d . This device comes with 600 ANSI lumens, a 20000:1 contrast ratio, and full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution. Today, the writers from Theater and High Fidelity released their review of this particular device. The writers stated that the projector had an interesting design that allowed the device to display images in a smaller room. The projector is able to display up to a 100” inch image from only inches from the screen. This is a very convenient feature. Another big feature about the LS-100d is that it includes an external image processor. This device provides all the inputs and allows the user to control the projector from a remote location. The image quality was fairly impressive. The writers complimented the sharpness and thought that the image couldn’t have looked better. The final conclusion the writers stated was, “I’m sure some people are still thinking “$19,000 for a projector that only does a 100” image?” but that isn’t the reason for the LS-100d to exist. Some of us can’t fit a typical projector into our rooms. Even if we could afford an 85” or 103” flat panel display it might not physically be able to get into a room or be supported by the wall. The LS-100d lets you install a true theater sized screen almost anywhere you want and be able to fill it as long as you have the wall space.” [via Theater and High Fidelity ]

Microsoft Unveils IllumiShare Concept

Recently at the Human Factors in Computer Systems Conference, developers have unveiled a new way to turn your work station into an interactive display. The system combines a pico projector with a digital camera. The system looks like a lamp shade and allows an artist to send recently made artwork be published instantly online. The project is called illumiShare and is developed by the developers at Microsoft. A user to use an IllumiShare table and their drawings are instantly projected onto another user’s table. The trick of the system is to alternate the camera and projector so fast that it would seem like both devices are working at the same time, but in reality they are alternating. “To time multiplex the camera and projector and not see visible flicker we need to do that at 60 hertz,” said Sasa Junuzovic, a researcher at Microsoft Research. “What we need to do is simulate 120 hertz where it is going to alternate back and forth.” There is no word when IllumiShare will be available, but they are looking to manufacture several test models to distribute throughout the company. ASUS teases mystery product on its Facebook page (update: it’s a 3D Blu-ray writer!)

What’s this? ASUS is teasing a mystery product shrouded in shadows on its Facebook page. From the looks of it, the piano-black hardware is mounted vertically onto a brushed metal cantilevered stand that just oozes style. Our vague, uninformed reckonings make us wonder if it’s not an art-deco styled EeeBox , a desktop PC you’d be ashamed to hide under your desk, or the prettiest router we’ve ever seen. Either way, we’ll keep our eyes peeled and in the meantime, you can cast your own idle speculation into the comments below. Report: Front-lit Kindle coming in July

Strong rumors suggest a light will be built right into the the next Kindle, obviating the need for this optional cover. (Credit: Amazon) When Barnes & Noble launched a Nook e-reader with an integrated light last month, many speculated that it was only a matter of time before Amazon would release a new front-lit version of its monochrome Kindle e-ink e-reader. Well, according to an unnamed Reuter’s source who’s allegedly seen a prototype of the product, Amazon is aiming to have that new Kindle in stores by July. Barnes & Noble’s began shipping its $139 Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight at the end of April in time for Mother’s Day. The e-reader received a CNET Editors’ Choice and Barnes & Noble says that sales have been brisk. Until now, e-ink’s chief selling points have been how readable it is outdoors, even in bright sunlight, and very energ… [Read more] Related Links: Kindle vs. Nook vs. iPad: Which e-book reader should you buy? Slimmer, retina MacBook to debut at WWDC, report says

(Credit: Apple) Apple’s next generation of MacBook Pros will be unveiled at next month’s Worldwide Developers Conference, according to a new report. Adding to claims made by 9to5mac earlier today, Bloomberg now says Apple will take the wraps off thinner Mac notebooks that feature Retina Displays and Flash memory at its developer-centric show next month. Citing multiple unnamed sources, Bloomberg says the new MacBook Pros will be less than 0.95 inch thick and sport Intel’s third-generation Core series chips, code-named Ivy Bridge. The report is the latest to suggest Apple is on the verge of updating its Mac portable line with a thinner design. Earlier today Apple blog 9to5mac said Apple was “putting the finishing touches” on a revamped version of its 15-inch MacBook Pro with a higher-resolution display and USB 3.0, all with the removal of the optical drive to shrink it down in size. Bloomberg’s report makes no such mention of that feature disap… [Read more] Related Links: Apple may unveil new MacBook hybrid this year, says analyst iPad mini may be in the pipeline, says analyst Will this tantalizing tech make it into the new MacBook? Diablo III is going live, but is Diablo still relevant?

For a PC-only game built on well-trod swords-and-sorcery territory, Diablo III is generating a surprising amount of buzz from not only serious PC gamers, but also more mainstream and casual gamers. That’s good for PC gaming, as this may be the biggest thing to happen to that field since Minecraft . But will Diablo III be able to capture hearts and minds the way its two predecessors did, starting back in 1996? PC gamers Dan Ackerman and Rich Brown debate the relevance of this action RPG. Dan: This is an important question to ask, as having played the Diablo III beta , it’s clear that the basic gameplay ideas have not changed much since those earlier games. Despite the new (and quite fancy-looking) 3D graphics, the game has the same isometric view, and the same click-to-attack combat system. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that — it’s been in service, in a broad sense, going all the way back to Gauntlet. But I have to wonder if Diablo III has evolved enough from previous incarnations. Related stories What’s in the Diablo III Collector’s Edition? Samsung cops a feel in Galaxy S III ‘for humans’ ad

If you think this hand has a solid grasp on the Galaxy S III, wait till you see what else gets grabbed in this new Samsung ad. (Credit: Screenshot by Eric Mack/CNET ) Methinks the folks at Samsung’s ad agency have been watching too much “Mad Men.” When the company unveiled the Galaxy S III in London recently, the Korean phonemaker told us time and again its new flagship Android phone is “designed for humans.” Today it revealed a new ad that somehow manages to take this little bit of slogan stupidity to a new level. The 60-second advertisement inexplicably starts out with a shot of a woman pretty clearly being felt up before melting into a montage of stock milestones from a stock lifetime — wedding, childbirth, recital, etc. Presumably, I suppose, we should believe that the Galaxy S III is along for the ride all the way and although there’s no way to tell it from the ad, Samsung’s note for the video on YouTube inform us that it also “recognizes your voice (and) understands your intention.” Well that’s very helpful. Now I’ll have some help understanding what the guy with his hands all over the woman’s chest in the first five seconds was intendin… [Read more] Related Links: Ditch the iPhone for an Ice Cream Sandwich phone?
