Most normal sized use a halogen lamp as their light source. This allows the projector to be brighter than their environment and display full color images onto the screen. However, now that projctors are shrinking in size, the bulky halogen lamps are starting to be replaced by something smaller, LED lamps. These pint sized lamps are quickly becoming the light source of choice for many pico projector manufacturers. LEDs are not only incredibly small, but they also consume a far less amount of energy, which is ideal for small . Also the LEDs have an incredibly long lamp life that has been rated to last as much as 30000 hours. The typical halogen lamp can only last between 2000 and 3000 hours. The most significant aspect though is that LEDs are 100% non-toxic and don’t use any harmful materials like mercury. Right now the only other lamp system used in pico is a laser system, which uses three colored lasers to create the display. However, there are only a handful of models using this lamp system compared to the amount of LED pico . [via Design World ]
