September 3rd, 2010

Stuck with an ODD-less netbook or laptop, but can’t quite shake the urge to watch a Disc on your next flight? If you call Japan (or you know a good importer), Buffalo has just the solution. The BP3D-PI6U2-BK measures 137- ? 147- ? 20mm, and the operation is pretty simple. Just wrangle an XP / Vista / Windows 7-equipped PC, locate an open USB socket, blow out the dust (optional, but highly recommended) and plug this guy in. Best of all, the unit also supports the boatload of 3D titles that are bound to show up over the coming months, but the privileged of being prepared doesn’t come cheap — it’ll land later this month for ?28,500 ($338). Update : Speaking of importers… White Rabbit Express has this up for pre-order at $350 , along with a slew of other Japanese wares. Huzzah! Sony: PlayStation 3 Blu-ray 3D update due in October

September 1st, 2010

Sponsors

Despite what we’d heard before , Sony announced today at IFA that the firmware update bringing 3D playback to the PlayStation 3 will not arrive this month, instead pushed back to October which, we are told, is an entire 30 days away. until then we’ll have to live with the recent MotorStorm 3D game that recently popped up on PSN and a slightly-lower res version of Wipeout . Unfortunately, there still aren’t many movies to watch for the time being, and even the most ardent early adopters may want to wait until Sony rolls out the Michael Jackson’s This Is It - 3D Enhanced Edition and Alice in Wonderland 3D bundles it also announced. For the rest of us, we’ll probably still be firmly planted on the fence by the time the Green Hornet and Spiderman movies mentioned on stage come to disc. Home Theater Equiped With Automatic Masking

August 19th, 2010

Not all movies are created equally. Most movies are created in one of several different aspect ratios. The problem though is that this means that the movies are compressed or stretched by the time they get to the consumer market. The best way to fix this problem is to have your own theater that can adjust to each aspect ratio. That is what this owner did when they decided to turn their new addition into a dedicated theater. The 12 foot wide curved screen is paired with a Digital Projection TITAN 1080p-250 projector. This model can display 2000 ANSI lumens, a 5000:1 contrast ratio, and full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution. The owner’s library is controlled with a 200 disc changer and the projector and screen are programmed to adjust accordingly to each one. The screen comes with motorized masking capabilities, which moves the black bars so that they fit with the image. This helps make a nicer looking display. [via Electronic House ]

Panasonic intros 42- and 50-inch 3D Viera GT25 plasma sets, its first with 2D-to-3D conversion

August 17th, 2010

If you thought you could crawl in a corner and wait for this 3D onslaught to pass, you may be camped out for some time to come. Panasonic is following up on its CES introductions with a new pair of 3D plasmas for the gaming set, the Viera 3D GT25 range. Said series is debuting with a pair to choose from, the 50-inch TC-P50GT25 and the 42-inch TC-P42G25. The latter is Panny’s first-ever 42-inch Full HD 3D plasma, and as you’d expect, both of these guys will require active shutter glasses in order to operate. As for specs? You’re looking at a 1080p panel, 600Hz sub-field drive, 24p playback and (a company first) 2D-to-3D conversion that may or may not be the answer to all of life’s problems. Or maybe they’ll just do what Sony and Samsung have already been doing. The duo should be on retail shelves by the end of this month, with the little guy going for $1,699.95 and the big(ger) guy for $2,099.95. George Lucas officially announces Star Wars on Blu-ray in 2011

August 15th, 2010

As rumored , all six Star Wars movies will be released together on in 2011 for the 35th anniversary of the release of A New Hope . George Lucas personally announced the set on stage at the Celebration V event, and showed off a deleted scene from Return of the Jedi that will be included (embedded after the break.) While the “highest picture and audio quality” and extensive special features are promised, what won’t make it to are the original versions of the movies; Lucas told the New York Times that only the special editions will be included, since restoring the original versions in high enough quality would cost too much. No word on price, release date or any plans to release the films individually, but if you can stand living in a world where Greedo shot first then this will certainly be on next year’s shopping list. Samsung’s 3D gala: 65-inch UN65C8000, 50-inch PN50C490, and BD-C8000 eyes-on

August 12th, 2010

Earlier today, Samsung pulled the curtain off (quite literally, might we add) its newest 3DTVs and the world’s first portable 3D player at its New York City press conference. We were able to slap on a pair of the 3D specs and spend a bit of time staring at the (admittedly amazing) 65-inch LED 3DTV, the fairly mediocre sub-$1,000 720p 3DTV as well as form some early impressions of the player. We’ve got you covered with some pictures below, but mosey on past the break to check our two pennies on each of the new products. Samsung shows off portable, HTIB 3D Blu-ray player options and the biggest LED 3DTV yet

August 11th, 2010

Sponsors

We had no idea that the players Samsung showed off at CES would just be the first of a steady stream rolling out this year, and today in New York it’s showing off the latest set of 3D capable hardware — many of which have already shown up on retail shelves. The $499 BD-C8000 is the first portable player that can handle the new 3D discs; while the 10.3-inch screen is 2D only, it folds WiFi, 1GB of memory, HDMI 1.4, a 3 hour battery and all of Samsung’s DLNA and widget technology into its very netbook-looking shell for you to take somewhere that has a 3D-ready display. Though that’s already shipping on Amazon, we’ll have to wait until October to see the $1,799 HT-C9950W 7.1 theater in a box system, specifically designed (& priced) to match those ultra-thin 9000 series displays (and their sweet touchscreen remotes ). Speaking of LED edge lit 3DTVs, Sammy also mentioned it’s ready to ship the biggest of the bunch with the 65-inch UN65C8000 (compare that to Panasonic’s 65-inch VT25 plasma ) which missed the original July launch projection but is already popping up at a few sites for pre-orders at a price as much as $1,500 below its $5,999 MSRP. Gallery: Samsung 3D player, HTIB and HDTVs While those fill out the high end of the product line, more frugal buyers of course have the option of selecting older models that are dropping in price, but there are a few new displays and players (that we’ve seen before ) for them too. Samsung’s finally officially launching the 50-inch PN50C490 we saw last month that does 3D on a flat panel display in 720p for less than $1,000 . Right now, taking it from 3D capable to 3DTV is still an expensive proposition, but we’ll wait and see if any new promotions throwing in the starter kit — updated with a few new 3D exclusives including Dreamworks Animations’ How to Train Your Dragon and two IMAX 3D flicks, Shrek series coming soon — for free turn lookers into purchasers. Check the gallery for more pictures and the press release after the break for more specs and pricing information. Home Entertainment Projection Study Focuces on 1080p Projectors

August 4th, 2010

TFC Info announced today that they have completed their 2010 Entertainment Projection Study. The report was conducted to study why are being purchased instead of flat panel TVs. The study started back in 2008 and went all the way up to 2010. One of the key parts of the report showed that 1080p HD (1920 x 1080) resolution displays are prefered over all other resolutions for theaters. This could very easily be due to the fact that players and game consoles use the 1080p resolution. However a recent trend that has been found with 1080p is that their sales have been dwindling, which opens the market up for more low priced, more competitive to be introduced. “Right now average Joes may not yet perceive a front projector as an option, because of their preconceived ideas of form factor. With the proper education they can be made to buy the device that most closely matches their needs and wants (including price) for entertainment even when it doesn’t’ resemble a traditional television,” states Tanya Lippke, TFC Info manager of survey market research. “For those targeting the consumer market, this study enables you to see beyond what the customer says he wants and put a strategy in place that gives the customer what he does not yet know he wants.” [via EFY Times ]

Boxlight Announces Lamps 4 Life Program

August 4th, 2010

Boxlight has been developing and manufacturing award winning since its inception in 1985. Today, the company announced a new lamp warranty exchange program called Lamps 4 Life. This program will give owners of the company’s Seattle, Interactive, or MP projector series a lifetime warranty for their projector lamps. This means that owners of these will never have to pay again for replacement lamps. The company says that the Lamps 4 Life program was developed to help guarantee their customers that replacements were always available no matter how old the projector is. In order to get into the program, education and government customers will have to pay a one time fee of $99, while retail customers will have to pay $299. “We are very excited to announce the Lamps 4 Life warranty program to our customers. Lamps have traditionally been costly to replace – nearly as much as a new projector. With this program, a one time fee will guarantee a lifetime of replacement lamps.” Says Hank Nance, Boxlight President. “We strive to make Boxlight projector ownership trouble-free and we trust that this program will make it easy for our customers. The program is affordable, simple to follow, and most importantly will make ownership easy.” [via Boxlight ]

WD TV Live Plus gets reviewed, lauded for value

July 31st, 2010

After being announced in early June , Anandtech recently put the Western Digital WD TV Live Plus through its paces and discovered the Netflix enhancement works as advertised. Like many Netflix-enabled devices though, the TV Live comes up short compared to the full PC experience since access is limited to only the Instant Queue. Its presence also sacrifices firmware hackability — a quality which previously made up for the WD TV Live’s lack of versatility as an HTPC. The ability to move, copy, and manage locally stored media files via the interface, on the other hand, was praised as a unique advantage over competing models — exciting, we know. Sadly, video quality was docked as being “significantly less than the HTPC counterparts they’ve seen so far.” However, it’s possible this could be improved in the future via firmware updates, since its Sigma Designs processor features noise reduction and deinterlacing algorithms that strangely aren’t currently enabled. File format-wise, DVD ISOs worked flawlessly, while ISO and some WMV video formats experienced issues that users may want to read up on before buying. Gripes aside though, Anandtech was still willing to place it “around the top of the list” for media player devices, thanks to its wide file compatibility and robust features. For more details, hit the review source link. WD TV Live Plus gets reviewed, lauded for value originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 31 Jul 2010 11:07:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds . Sony, Tohoku University develop blue-violet laser with 100 watt output, eyeing 1TB optical disk future?

July 24th, 2010

As much as some would like to envision a world entirely bereft of disk-based media, with being the medium’s swan song, that ain’t happening. Sony ’s already looking to the future, and in cahoots with Tohoku University, it has developed a blue-violet laser capable of 100 watt output. That’s reportedly more than 100 times the “world’s highest output values for conventional blue-violet pulse semiconductor lasers.” In the press release, the company said its tested using such technology for next-generation, large-capacity optical disc-storage, and while that doesn’t say too much at face value, the Examiner reports (by way of various Japanese news outlets) that it equates to 20 times the storage of current disks,or about 1TB of data. Don’t worry, we’re sure all those 4K 3D films will still find a way to justify a “barebones” release dearth of features before magically making room for a second (and even third) Special Edition in time for respective holiday seasons. TDK inflates to BDXL, bringing 100GB writable Blu-ray discs in September

July 22nd, 2010

Why, it seems like only yesterday that 50GB was an awful lot of capacity. Now, not so much. BDXL discs are here to rescue your data, and TDK is the latest to roll out triple-decker discs with 100GB of capacity. As with the others, these discs will only work in BDXL-compatible readers and writers, meaning yet another early round of devices is in the process of being obsoleted. (Remember Profile 2.0 ?) These discs are set to ship in Japan in September, and sometime later will come the quadruple-decker BDXL discs with 128GB. We wonder, though: can a retail offering really be considered a “pack” if it only contains one disc? Samsung’s new plasmas will do 3D for much cheaper - Update: $989 for 50-inch 720p

July 21st, 2010

Looks like Samsung’s 3D players aren’t the only ones coming in cheaper versions , as it’s unveiled the new 680 Series and 490 Series plasma HDTVs. Both were shown off in Korea yesterday, though the US website only features a product page for the 50-inch PN50C680 so far, showing off its 1080p specs and DLNA access. You will give up a few features from higher end plasmas , which add picture-in-picture, widgets, a higher contrast ratio and slimmer designs to the mix. The PN50C490’s situation is a bit murkier, but FlatpanelsHD reports it will be the first 720p 3DTV of the current generation. With current series 4 plasmas retailing for around $720, it could also be the first flat 3D set to crack (or at least approach) the $1,000 barrier — if you’re willing to miss out on the extra pixels. Update : A listing on ABC Warehouse shows the PN50C490 with a few specs plus $1,099 MSRP, but already up for preorder for just $989. Perfect for some PS3 gaming or ESPN3D watching, right? Of course, as a few commenters have mentioned, you can get a 60-inch 1080p projection 3D capable from Mitsubishi for even less, so that’s hardly your only cheap 3D option. [Thanks, John Doe] Continue reading Samsung’s new plasmas will do 3D for much cheaper - Update: $989 for 50-inch 720p Samsung’s new plasmas will do 3D for much cheaper - Update: $989 for 50-inch 720p originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 20 Jul 2010 16:31:00 EST. Samsung quietly expands its 3D Blu-ray player lineup with a few updated models

July 13th, 2010

Don’t be surprised to see a couple of new Samsung players on the shelf at local or online retailers while shopping, as it’s rolling out new 3D capable models in the BD-C5900, BD-C6800 and BD-C7900. The $399 (MSRP) BD-C7900 updates the older BD-C6900 with two HDMI outs, useful for those with an older receiver that isn’t HDMI 1.4 compatible , while the $279 BD-C6800 seems to have all the features of the BD-C6900 except for that porthole on top, and comes in at a lower price. Last up is the BD-C5900 with an MSRP of $229 which puts it within reach of two bills at retail, but means losing the 1GB of internal storage featured by the other two players. The product pages aren’t all fully updated on Samsung’s site yet, but the BD-C5900 has already arrived at Amazon and Best Buy and the others shouldn’t be far behind. Of course, if 3D’s not your thing, we’d still keep an eye out for their arrival — a price break on the older 2D-only models that were released earlier this year shouldn’t be too far behind.
