Toshiba finally dives into Blu-ray 3D with BDX3100 player, offers up BDX1100 if stereo’s not your style

September 3rd, 2010

Seems like Toshiba bit off more 3D than it could chew this year — the Japanese firm’s just announced that the new BDX3100KB will be its first set-top stereoscopic player, never mind the BDX3000 it announced at CES . Still, we’re willing to forgive and forget if the new machine (replete with DivX and MKV playback, Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 surround, and instant playback of AVCHD footage from connected camcorders) makes it stateside sometime soon — both it and the relatively boring BDX1100 standard unit are presently slated for a UK release (at unspecified prices) in October of this year. PR after the break. Samsung Blu-ray players won’t play Warner, Universal movies after firmware update, require a rollback

August 23rd, 2010

As annoying as continuous player updates are, usually having the latest one is the best way to play more movies. Unfortunately the opposite was the case for Samsung ( again ) with the v2.09 update posted recently for its 2009 BD-Px600 line of players. Forum posters on CNET and AVSForum report the upgrade blocked them from playing Universal and Warner Bros. movies, which conveniently lock up after displaying the title image. Samsung’s rolled back to an older firmware version (v2.07) on its support site that should fix things for now, but with some users still having problems downgrading, all they can do is wait for the next update, whenever that arrives. Some help line reps have said the new version should arrive “in a couple of weeks,” but it’s not like you really wanted to watch Clash of the Titans or Book of Eli right now anyway, right? LG’s BX580 network 3D Blu-ray player now shipping for $100 less than expected

June 21st, 2010

Is there an HDMI 1.4-compatible player in your future? LG’s BX580 wants to be your player of today . The device is now shipping, more or less falling in line with the ” month or two ” estimate we got back in May, but clocking in at $100 less than the $400 we’d expected it at. Sure it’s listed on Amazon’s page at $399, but add it to your shopping cart and (spoiler alert) it’s actually just $299.86. That’s a relative bargain — though we’d still have a hard time choosing this over an equally 3D-ready PS3 . Plextor gets all zen with PlexMedia: a modular, network-attached Blu-ray player

June 3rd, 2010

It’s not often we come across an external drive that looks like anything but a brick, so we were pleasantly surprised to see Plextor demoing something a little more svelte at Computex . We can tell the PlexMedia network attached media player (bottom) is a looker right off the bat, but it truly becomes useful when you plug in the PX-B120U (top) designed to go with it. The combination is a fully-functional disc player that apparently outputs to a TV, but the smaller box can also detach, slip into your bookbag and become an external drive for your PC. Since there’s no specs or pics of the unit’s rear, we honestly have no idea how it accomplishes either, but we imagine the info will spontaneously pop into our being if we stare long enough at those azure ripples, and thus complete our meditation. On the off-chance that doesn’t work, we’ve also dispatched a carrier pigeon to Plextor HQ for the answers; in the meanwhile, you can peruse the presser after the break. Samsung’s 3D Blu-ray player available for preorder on Amazon: $399

January 28th, 2010

It feels like we just left our shutter glasses behind at CES, but already a few of Samsung’s new 2010 players (all featuring Internet@TV and Samsung Apps features) have popped up for preorders on Amazon, including the 3D playing BD-C6900 . The company just announced 240HZ 3D LCDs have begun mass production and isn’t waiting for the competition before diving in, issuing the first price we’ve seen for one of the new plays at a penny shy of $400. Moving down the line the super slim and woodgrain textured, but 2D only, BD-C7500 is also $399.99, while the speedy BD-C6500 and its promised 15 second bootup time is set for $299. The entry level and eco-focused BD-C5500 is still unpriced but instead of asking whether you can afford the price of a 3D player, ask yourself if you can afford not to own a player with a hole in the top. The answer should be obvious. Gallery: Samsung BD-C6900 3D player Samsung’s 3D player available for preorder on Amazon: $399 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 28 Jan 2010 15:11:00 EST. Panasonic’s other 2010 Blu-ray players keep making 2D look & sound better

January 7th, 2010

Not planning to make the jump to 3D this year? Panasonic is still working on hardware for you too. Continued revisions of the UniPhier processor and PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus hardware at their core to improve picture quality, reduce size & power consumption, and lower the bootup time from off to playing to just 14 seconds. The DMP-BD45 foregoes any VieraCast features beyond BD-Live hookups, while the BD65 and BD85 (above) add access to streaming services, expanded audio codec processing, and in the case of the BD85, additional hardware tweaks to keep audiophiles happy. Check the PR after the break for every detail except price and shipping dates — we won’t call you Luddites for living in a 3D-less world, just think (& Twitter) it. Leaked Walmart ad reveals Xbox 360 Arcade with $100 gift card, $300 HP G60 laptop

November 4th, 2009

Sponsors

It’s not quite a $99 Xbox 360, but if this apparent Walmart scan via Kotaku is to be believed, that $199 Arcade version is getting a $100 gift card promotion going into effect this Saturday. In real terms, that boils down to a $234 Xbox 360 Pro for first-time buyers, seeing as you’ll be needing that $135, 120GB hard drive, too. Also listed are a Sony player for $148 (we’re guessing the currently-MSRP’d $199 BDP-S360), and a $298 HP G60-519WM, which touts a 2.2GHz Intel Celeron, 15.6-inch HD display, Windows 7 Premium, 3GB RAM, and a 250GB HDD — not a bad followup at all for that Compaq CQ60 . Some interesting spy shots from the Slick Deals forum seem to give credence to the scan, although we’re still playing wait-and-see — that $100 gift card with the Xbox 360 arcade is almost too good to be true, even if it is just a clever tactic to clear shelf space in the lead-up to Black Friday. Update: Sure as the sun, an official ad has popped up on Yahoo’s front page. Screenshot after the break. JVC joins the sub-$200 Blu-ray player game with ultrathin XV-BP11

October 29th, 2009

Sub-$200 players certainly aren’t new — heck, some guys have been doing it since the year 2008 — but you’ll never catch us kvetching about a little more competition. JVC has today introduced (in the briefest way possible, might we add) its newest player just ten months after deciding to play the BD game here in the States. The ultrathin (and “now available”) XV-BP11 should slide into just about any AV rack, bringing / DVD playback, AVCHD support, HDMI 1.3, a USB socket and compatibility with a slew of audio formats. Curiously enough, the outfit doesn’t bother to mention if this thing is Profile 2.0, but we’re guessing (read: hoping) that it wouldn’t do something as ludicrous as charge two bills for a Profile 1.1 deck in late 2009. Then again, we’ve seen zanier things go down… Update : Ouch — this thing is only Profile 1.1 . Dud. VUDU equips LG’s BD390 Blu-ray player with movie streaming abilities

September 10th, 2009

LG’s WiFi-enabled, DivX-friendly BD390 player has been shipping here in the States since May, but not until now have you really had a reason to pick one up. Here at CEDIA, VUDU is taking one step further away from its standalone movie set-top-box by announcing that the aforementioned deck will become the first of its kind to tap into VUDU’s growing library of on-demand film rentals. Of course, adding VUDU to this player was a natural move given the built-in Ethernet port, though users will have to wait until the end of this month to suck down the free update. In case you’re wondering, the VUDU interface on LG’s player will be the same as the one found on the company’s own hardware (not to mention a few LG HDTVs ), and the $399 price point will remain the same even after the new functionality is added. VIZIO VBR100 Blu-ray player freed from superstore confines, unboxed on video

August 10th, 2009

We’d heard VIZIO’s VBR100 BD-Live ready (& timed Wal-mart exclusive ) player would be making an appearance this month, and our friends over at FormatWarCentral have not only spotted the rare bird in the wild, but brought one and performed a video unboxing for all to experience. Be prepared for bad news like a lack of high definition cables included in the $178 package, though coax and optical audio outputs plus the too often-forgotten rear mounted USB port are welcome bonuses. Still avoiding the potential trampling issue at Wal-mart? Other stores should have a similar VBR110 model soon, check the video beyond the link or embedded after the break and imagine the packaging splayed about your own living room. Onkyo shows pride in its DV-BD507 Blu-ray player with lofty $449 price tag

July 30th, 2009

Onkyo’s never been one to dabble in the bargain basement, but with BD decks selling for well under the $200 mark, we’re wondering what kind of secret sauce is boxed in with the DV-BD507. The outfit’s latest Profile 2.0 player doesn’t sound too special based on specs alone, as it supports HDMI 1.3a, 1080p output, BD-Live functionality and BonusView features just like every other respectable rival on the market already. Sure, we can’t say we don’t appreciate its innate ability to process AVCHD files stored on SD / SDHC cards or toasted DVDs, but even on a good day we can’t justify the $449 MSRP. Maybe it’s upgradable to 3D … or something. Fancy rear shot is waiting after the break. Vizio’s VBR100 Blu-ray player is a $188 Wal-mart exclusive next month

June 25th, 2009

Sponsors

We still don’t know what it looks like, but during its line show, Vizio let slip that the sub-$200 VBR100 player announced at CES is now scheduled to come to Wal-mart only in July. For $188 (just not that cheap anymore) Wal-mart shoppers can expect a BD-Live ready (with optional 1GB+ USB thumbdrive attached) player, though no details on codec or output support. Don’t shop at Wal-mart for philosophical reasons, quality concerns or fear of being trampled during an early Black Friday rush? A similar VBR110 model should follow, coming to other retailers around November/December, just in time to match with that brand new WiFi connected Netflix / Amazon / Twitter etc. widget packing . Harman Kardon brings Blu-ray to America with BDP 1 deck

June 10th, 2009

See that player right there? It looks really familiar, doesn’t it? Aside from a power adapter that’s suited for use in the United States of America, it’s essentially the BDP 10 sans a zero. Shortly after announcing its first deck overseas, Harman Kardon has seen fit to offer up a model here in the States, with BD-Live functionality, a USB socket, HDMI 1.3a, Ethernet, IR-remote in / out jacks, optical / coaxial digital audio outputs and support for all the major audio formats. The pain? $499, and it should start filtering into retailers as early as this month. Pioneer’s Blu-ray player trio gets official in the US

June 5th, 2009

Well, that didn’t take long, now did it? Right on the heels of the UK announcement , Pioneer’s trifecta of Profile 2.0 decks — the BDP-120, BDP-320 and pictured BDP-23FD (known as the BDP-LX52 in European trim) — got their official US intro to the tune of $299, $399 and $599, respectively. The specs from the January peek at these models remain intact, but covering three price brackets requires some points of differentiation; in this case provided by various video processing magic, onboard persistent storage for the BDP-320 and BDP-23FD, and missing 7.1-channel analog outs on the BDP-120. Oh yeah, and you just know that the BDP-23FD gets that swank Elite badging. Sony BDP-S360 Blu-ray player casually arrives at Best Buy

The BDP-S360 adds the DTS-HD MA decoding you were missing from the previous model , plus improved DVD scaling and out of the box BD-Live support. Of course one has to ask themselves if, in 2009, a player lacking the Netflix streaming or Amazon VOD features of competing hardware , or the DLNA streaming and integrated WiFi of the upcoming BDP-S560 is really worth braving these H1N1-infested streets, but we’ll leave that choice up to you. Samsung’s slim BD-P4600 Blu-ray player gets reviewed

May 6th, 2009

Sponsors

Samsung’s new BD-P4600 player certainly impresses on first glance and, according to the folks at CNET , it has quite a bit more going for it than just good looks, even if it’s not entirely without its share of faults. On the upside, the player and its HQV image processing can apparently hold its own when it comes to the all-important question of image quality, and it packs no shortage of non- features as well, including Netflix and Pandora support, a bundled WiFi USB dongle, 1GB of on-board memory, and support for media streaming off a connected PC. Unfortunately, that protruding USB dongle does cramp the style of the player somewhat and, while the PC streaming is certainly welcome, it can apparently be a bit of a chore to get set up properly. Of course, there’s also the small matter of the $500 price tag, although CNET says Samsung’s cheaper BD-P3600 model should provide an adequate, if slightly less slim substitute for those looking for some more bang for the buck. Samsung BD-P4600 hands-on: ‘world’s slimmest’ Blu-ray player

April 10th, 2009

We’re not quite sold on its world’s slimmest player claim, but this Samsung BD-P4600 is certainly one of the sleekest, especially with its Touch of Color aesthetic. Also like its ToC muse, it seems to have a knack for catching and showing off dust particles. We didn’t see the touch controls on top of the unit, and we weren’t allowed to pull it out and get a clear shot of the ports, but did manage to snap a image of the disc loader on the right side of the unit. Still no word on pricing, so keep guessing.
