Technical Audio Devices ( TAD ), a subsidiary of Pioneer, has a little something to show audiophiles that may lure them away from their CD transports yet — a new 2-channel audio format for Blu-ray discs that it unapologetically claims “rivals 2-channel analog sound.” We’re not sure if that means reel-to-reel or vinyl is in the crosshairs, but the company is putting its apparently-unnamed format up for demo at CES. The demos are being hosted by none other than audiophile classic Sheffield Labs recording engineers Bill Schnee and Doug Sax, who have picked out some choice cuts to be played on pro-level TAD Compact Reference monitors and associated electronics; no word on if whiskey is part of the demo. Over here in the US, JVC fans have had to watch with lustful eyes at all the JVC Blu-ray products in the rest of the world, but no more. Today JVC has announced both a stand-alone Blu-ray player and a 3.1 home theater in a box. The XV-PB1 Blu-ray player will be available in March for $299 and as you’d expect, it will support BD Live content as well as playback AVCHD videos you create on your HD camcorder. We assume the new TH-SB100 is a US variation of the NX-BD3 previously available in Europe which is of course a BD Live player, but we’re sad to say there’s no mention of any support for DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD. Nevertheless it will be available in April for $699. The MPro110 has picked up some pretty positive vibes in the burgeoning pico projector market, but 3M is already looking well beyond that. At this year’s CES, the company is debuting the LCoS-based MM200, a micro projection engine that is destined to find its way into cellphones, handheld accessories and digital cameras of the future. Reportedly, the device can project a 50-inch image while only drawing a single watt of power, and best of all, it’ll be “available for consumer purchase in 2009.” Yeah, as in, this year. One more look is after the break. Never mind that VIZIO is breaking from its discount-market image, the combination of a known brand name and $199 pricetag for its VBR100 Blu-ray player is the one-two punch here. The company is showing off this new 2-inch thick (not the slimmest , but not exactly portly, either) Blu-ray deck at CES this week, and the feature set is pretty encouraging. The upconverted DVD feed coming out of the HDMI jack can be switched between 720p, 1080i and 1080p, but even more importantly, the unit’s 7.1-analog jacks around back can output decoded Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. Set for release in April for a penny under $200. We caught sight of Epson’s PowerLite Home Cinema 6500 UB quite a while back , but now it’s available and on display at CES as the company’s flagship home projector. If you’ve forgotten, this little beast boasts a 920 x 1080 full HD resolution, displays 1600 ANSI lumens, and a 75000:1 contrast ratio. All in all, not too bad for the $3,000 asking price. At last year’s CES, Texas Instruments was simply demonstrating prototypes of its DLP Pico technology; this year, it’s officially showcasing the real deal. The aforesaid chipset is currently residing within the WowWee Cinemin line and Optoma’s PK-101, but here’s something you didn’t know. Evidently, the chip will also be a critical part of pico projectors from Samsung (the MBP200 with an SD card slot), BenQ (the GP1 with an integrated USB port; available in March for $599) and Toshiba (TDP-F10U Mobile LED Projector). Also of note, BUG Labs will presumably be introducing a module of its own dubbed BUGprojector, which will enable legible beaming of 480 x 320 images at just eight inches away along with stereo playback and a brightness of 9 lumens. Lastly, TI itself has announced that a DLP Pico Projector Kit which sports an HVGA resolution, a universal power supply and a few other integral components necessary for integrating it into consumer, industrial and medical products. Sharp’s chosen to focus on creating an affordable 1080p home projector, rolling out the single chip DLP-based XV-Z15000. Ready for the discerning customer with $2,999 in their pocket, it features a 30,000:1 contrast ratio and 1600 ANSI brightness, plus Keystone Correction ready to take care of any type of distortion that may crop up. Projector heads can put this up against the PT-AE3000 and company when it ships in March. We didn’t have high hopes going into Panny’s press conference today, but the company still managed to unveil a few surprises here in Vegas. One of those shockers was the world’s first portable Blu-ray player, the DMP-. Said device supposedly includes the ability to pump out 1080p content, and while we’re not terribly enthused about the design, we suppose we’ll give it a pass being that’s a world first. Arcam may not be at the top of your list of must-have brands, but it’s about to join the flourishing Blu-ray player market in the near future, regardless. Sadly, the only details about the deck you see above — which was seen sporting a high-end-signifying FMJ-xxx logo at CES — are that it’s likely to be staggeringly expensive and it should ship next month. ‘Til then, it looks like you’ll be testing your patience. Is 2009 finally the year of the projector phone? Eh, not likely — but there are finally a few models filtering into retail after years of talk, prototypes , and empty promises, including the Logic Bolt from independent manufacturer Logic Wireless and this puppy from Sammy. We’re told that the aptly-named Show is inbound for release in South Korea before the end of the month, it runs Samsung’s ubiquitous TouchWiz platform, and it packs DLP-based pico projector tech from TI , but that’s about all we (and Samsung’s US reps) seem to know about it. The projector can be used to view media stored in phone memory, pull up mobile TV via Korea’s T-DMB airwaves, or simply project light, a function luddites may know better as a “flashlight.” Most importantly, it actually isn’t half-bad looking — a symptom of a major manufacturer getting involved and throwing some won and industrial design staff at the thing, we bet.
