New LG BD590 Blu-ray player sports a 250GB hard drive

January 15th, 2010

Like the LG BD390 , the new LG Blu-ray player has WiFi, BD Live, VUDU and DLNA, what’s new is the 250GB hard drive. Now the first thing we thought of when we heard LG was including a hard drive was Managed Copy , but there’s no mention of it in the press release. What is in there though is the ability to download VUDU movies, pictures, music and more to it. This is especially useful if your Blu-ray player isn’t well connected since it allows you to sneaker net your content or to copy it over and play it back later. There’s no mention of price or availability, but this guy does have two little brothers, the BD550 and BD570, that feature many of the same internet features, but don’t have a hard drive. HD DVD rides again: TCL brings China Blue HD & Blu-ray together for a CES face-off

January 13th, 2010

Ah, HD DVD, our old friend - we thought we’d never see you again . But there was no mistaking it, here’s the logo tucked away in Chinese manufacturer TCL’s booth on a China Blue HD deck next to a similar player. The demo appeared to be down when we stopped by making this not much of a fight — although with recent gains by CBHD like adding studio support from Paramount, it may want to take this challenger more seriously. We’ll move the threat level on this conflict to yellow. Upcoming Haier Blu-ray players are as intriguing as they are cheap

January 9th, 2010

Sponsors

We spotted Haier’s first U.S. entry into the player market luxuriating at Digital Experience following the company’s recent trend of surprisingly complete feature sets for low prices . The Broadcom-powered BDP100 and BDP200W are no great surprise, comparing closely with Best Buy’s recent Insignia players as Netflix streaming decks, the former without WiFi for $169 and the latter with wireless internet for $229. However they’re distinguished slightly by the addition of Pandora’s streaming music, plus plans to support apps/streaming from another provider or two around launch in the first quarter. What was promised but not shown this go round were some interesting features powered by the unit’s Flash compatibility, we’ll be sure to check them out on the CES floor today and report back on the experience as well as its other products, including a new LED edge lit LCD line and /LCD combo TV with Netflix. For now, the press release and a couple of more images after the break. Now that Funai owns the Philips brand name in the U.S., it isn’t hesitating to roll out a host of Blu-ray players featuring Netflix Watch Instantly streaming under that banner. The BDP5110 and 5320 (pictured above) are both BD-Live players that add vTuner Internet radio as well, while the 5110 will arrive in Q1 for $169, the BDP5320 includes a WiFi dongle and should ship around the same time for $249. At the top of the line sits the BDP7320 (pictured after the break) with all of those features plus DLNA access to stream video from networked devices or PCs, due in Q2 for $279. Disney’s first 3D Blu-ray release to hit in the fourth quarter

January 8th, 2010

Sponsors

Yes you read that right, the studio with the most new 3D movies around isn’t going to release its first title until the fourth quarter of 2010. We’ve seen some cool 3D demos in past few days but lets face it, the technology is worthless without content. Now you might think that Disney would help launch 3D with a big hit like Toy Story 3 , but you’d be wrong. No instead it’ll all get kicked off with Disney’s A Christmas Carol — no we’re not feeling it either. Disney is the third studio to announce 3D content that’ll be released this year, and although none of them are up our alley, we’re sure someone is excited to see them. 3M rolls out MPro 150 pocket projector with 1GB of inbuilt storage

January 8th, 2010

3M just got done pushing out its MPro 120 , and here at CES we’re already feasting our eyes on the MPro 150. For all intents and purposes, this is just an MPro 120 with 1GB of internal storage and a microSD expansion slot. We spotted it over at CES Unveiled, and while the VGA video wasn’t anything special, the ability to open and display PDFs, Excel files and PowerPoint documents (in addition to the traditional movie and audio files) was indeed a nice add for the traveling salesperson. Hit up the full release after the break if you’re thirsty for more details, and you should see it ship next month for just under $400. InFocus updates IN2100 and IN3100 series projectors, boosts brightness, burns retinas

January 8th, 2010

“With the adoption of flat panels in schools and businesses, expectations for what’s ‘bright enough’ have changed.” That’s the lead-off on the explanation for the new IN2100 and IN3100 series DLP projectors from InFocus, reasoning that we can definitely get behind. Both lines were initially announced back in 2008 and the 2100 line is now getting some subtle tweaks, longer-lasting bulbs, “dramatically increased” brightness, and more inputs for better institutional performance. The 3100 adds HDMI to the existing outputs, wireless connectivity using Wireless DisplayLink, and PC-free presenting from a USB stick via LitePort. Lower-end models in both series are available now, with the top-shelf entrants dropping later this quarter. IN2100 models start at $599 and IN3100 models begin at a rather spendier $1,499, but hey, it’s a business expense, right? Go crazy. ViewSonic blitzes CES: HDTVs, nettops, PMPs, laptops and more

January 7th, 2010

You wouldn’t generally think of a smaller outfit such as ViewSonic having a major presence here at CES , but sure enough, the company has hit the ground blazing in Las Vegas. Kicking things off is the new ViewLED TV lineup, which consists of four LED-backlit sets ranging from 19- ($299) to 42-inches ($1,199) in size. Moving from HDTVs to PC panels, we’ve got ten new Eco-View monitors spanning the entire gamut of sizes and features. The company is also letting loose its VFP858 connected Bluetooth smart frame, which packs an 8-inch panel, an integrated microphone, stereo speakers and support for handsfree dialing… all from a digiframe. For media junkies on the run, the new line of MovieBooks (including the 5-inch VPD550T and 3-inch VPD313T) both sport touch-sensitive displays and sub-$150 price tags. Finally, we’ve got no fewer than nine new laptop and desktop models, including the 13.3-inch VNB131 ViewBook Pro, 18.5-inch VPC190 all-in-one and the VOT125 nettop. Obviously we’ve got far too many pricing, availability and hardware details to cover in this space, but all the information you could ever want on the new kit is hosted up after the break. HP Notebook Projection Companion stuffs a little bit of projection into a little bit of a projector

January 6th, 2010

Stepping across the not-so-fine line between regular projectors that you’d bring home to your parents and those rebellious pico affairs , HP’s Notebook Projection Companion offers up to 60-inches of LED-based projection at a range of up to 8.5 feet. It pumps light at 100 lumens and an 800:1 contrast ratio to put an SVGA 858 x 600 image up against the wall. The projector works with a standard VGA plug, and cuts a rather striking figure in its brushed aluminum shell. We spotted the “Companion” doing its thing in a relatively dimly lit room, and it certainly is a jump beyond a — it’s almost completely usable, in fact. We’d still probably prefer a large laptop screen for watching a movie, but if you’ve got to share a presentation or an experience, you could probably do worse than this $499 unit. It ships on January 15th. Ceton’s quad CableCARD tuner for Windows Media Center gets a price

January 6th, 2010

Sponsors

We love Windows Media Center but without access to our favorite HD content it just isn’t that interesting. So obviously we got excited when we first learned that Ceton planned to release a PCI-E card that would allow us to record four HD shows at once with a single CableCARD, but the question has been, how much? Now we knew it’d be cheaper than the $1200 that ATI would charge us for four digital cable tuners but according to Dave Zatz the yet to be announced price is $399. In addition, he has learned that Steve Balmer will demo the card in the big CES keynote Wednesday — which of course we’ll be covering live. This leads us to believe that there might be some other good news for Media Center fans, and since we’re dreamers, we’re hoping for some new Extenders for Media Center. Magnetic unveils a clutch of glasses-free 3D displays

January 6th, 2010

As you well know, Magnetic 3D is one of many companies that have been dabbling in 3D sans glasses — and lo and behold! Here we are in Las Vegas where the company is debuting three new auto-stereoscopic product lines including the Allura (commercial grade high-definition 3D LCD monitors up to 55-inches), Emersa (3D displays for close proximity viewing up to 42-inches), and Envolve 3D touch displays for commercial uses — you know, slot gaming, kiosks, and all sorts of red hot Vegas-y stuff. Will this be the year that 3D displays stop giving us headaches? Light Blue Optics unveils Light Touch: a 10-inch touchscreen pico projector based on lasers (video)

January 5th, 2010

Sponsors

They promised us a device in 2010 and sure enough, Light Blue Optics just announced Light Touch. As the name implies, LBO’s product is a laser projector that turns any flat surface into an auto-focused and image-adjusted 10-inch touchscreen with WVGA resolution thanks to its laser- (not LED) based pico projection engine dubbed HLP (holographic laser projection) and infrared touch-sensing system. Light Touch runs Adobe Flash Lite 3.1 and includes WiFi and Bluetooth radios, 2GB of on-board storage (with microSD slot for up to 32GB more), and a battery capable of about 2-hours worth of runtime. We’ll be getting up close and personal with the mini projector here at CES so until then, feast your eyes on the simulated demo and usage scenarios after the break.
