Like the LG BD390 , the new LG Blu-ray player has WiFi, BD Live, VUDU and DLNA, what’s new is the 250GB hard drive. Now the first thing we thought of when we heard LG was including a hard drive was Managed Copy , but there’s no mention of it in the press release. What is in there though is the ability to download VUDU movies, pictures, music and more to it. This is especially useful if your Blu-ray player isn’t well connected since it allows you to sneaker net your content or to copy it over and play it back later. There’s no mention of price or availability, but this guy does have two little brothers, the BD550 and BD570, that feature many of the same internet features, but don’t have a hard drive. Toshiba’s going all-in on the Blu-ray front here at CES and launching three new connected Blu-ray players: the BDX2500, the BDX2700 and the 3D-ready BDX3000. All three models do online streaming through a new partnership with CinemaNow; the $199 BDX2500 has a USB port for a wireless dongle, while the $249 BDX2700 and as-yet-unpriced BDX3000 have built-in WiFi. Expect the 2D models in the spring, and the three-dee unit in Q3. Full PR after the break. (That’s a pic of the current BDX2000, by the way — we’ll update with a new pic if the new ones look different.) Samsung has unveiled its latest family of Blu-ray players for 2010 topped by the BD-C6900 (above), compatible with both the 3D Blu-ray standard and the company’s existing 3D displays. If your guests aren’t thrilled by Full HD 3D and funky glasses they can always peek through the transparent cover and watch the disc spin. Also coming this year are the BD-C6500 with a promised 15-second boot time and disc load time, a new slim blu-ray champ with the BD-C7500 (after the break) and the low end BD-C5500. No word on prices or dates, but we’re sure these should be appearing on shelves around the time the weather warms up. Oh sigh. We’d been hearing that Warner Brothers would be pushing for month-long rental delays for mail-order services in order to boost sales, and it looks like Netflix has been pushed into submission: under an agreement announced today, Warner Brother DVDs and Blu-rays won’t be available to Netflix subscribers for 28 days after they’re released for sale. What’s worse, Netflix says it expects to reach similar deals with the other major studios as time goes on. Why would Reed Hastings agree to a clear imposition on his company’s rights under the first-sale doctrine? We’re guessing this is the only way the studios would open up and allow more movies to hit Watch Instantly — and the AP says Netflix is also getting a discount on the actual discs. Yeah, it’s lame, but honestly we’d rather take more streaming content over new releases in the mail straight away, so let’s hope all this wheeling and dealing pays off. Ah, HD DVD, our old friend - we thought we’d never see you again . But there was no mistaking it, here’s the logo tucked away in Chinese manufacturer TCL’s booth on a China Blue HD deck next to a similar Blu-ray player. The Blu-ray demo appeared to be down when we stopped by making this not much of a fight — although with recent gains by CBHD like adding studio support from Paramount, it may want to take this challenger more seriously. We’ll move the threat level on this conflict to yellow. Since releasing the initial Blu-ray players on the market years ago, Sony has been lagging a little behind in regards to features. Today that’s about to change as the top of the line BDP-S770 (pictured above) not only supports 3D, but also has built in WiFi, and iPhone/iPod Touch app for a remote (in addition to the standard remote) and plenty of streaming options like Netflix , Amazon and many others. The BDP-S570 also has built in WiFi, but unlike the 770, it will require a firmware update before DLNA works. The BDP-S370 brings the line home which is similar to its bigger brothers but requires an optional WiFi adapter if you need wireless. Taking 3D pictures with Fujifilm’s 3D point and shoot is pretty easy — even if ultimately unsatisfying — but if you need a place to display them, LG has that covered. Tucked away in its booth was a demo of “the world’s first 3D camera compatible HDTV” dutifully taking SD-card stored snaps and putting them on the big screen. Not an entirely complex process, but we figure if a better reviewed 3D camera makes it to market, you might appreciate picking up the right HDTV for the job. LG’s 6.9mm HDTV stole the show, but a bevy of the company’s other new wares were on display (and in action) at its press conference . The Mobile DTV-enabled DVD player was actually streaming live television via the temporary tower established here in Vegas, and the video quality was surprisingly good with no perceived lag or pixelation. We also witnessed a live Skype call, and while the quality was subpar due to the awful WiFi connection, the user interface and actual usability seemed satisfactory. Finally, the smattering of Infinia LCDs were downright dazzling, but given the competition, it’ll still be tough for these to break through in a world full of me-too sets. Toshiba may have announced a few things today at CES, but its press event was all about one major product: Cell TV. From what we can gather, the company is hopping on this bandwagon in a way we haven’t seen since it sank its teeth into HD DVD , and if all the claims pan out, you just might be looking at your next television. Details were short on future pricing and availability, but we get the idea that Tosh wants this on the market as soon as humanly possible. Reportedly, this thing will enable 2D-to-3D conversion of practically any content you watch; of course, we’ve seen content that was shot in 3D look awful when behind the glasses, so we’re not counting on the quality of the metamorphosis to be anything mind-blowing. That said, having such a chip within a TV opens up a whole new world of possibilities, and the accompanying uber-box shown in the gallery below is likely to sell right alongside of it. The purpose? To connect your “entire home” with your HDTV, not to mention bringing web content, video calling and stellar image quality to your otherwise drab den. Needless to say, we’re on pins and needles here waiting for more information, but we’ll be sure to pass it on as soon as it becomes available. Samsung’s just gushed its 2010 TV lineup, and chief among the troops is the 9000 series LED with built-in proprietary 3D processor and, more importantly, full support for a full color touchscreen remote control, integrated with WiFi and IR. Paired with the ultra-slim 9000 series (right), you can watch broadcast directly from the handheld and swipe it to the TV to enjoy. The 8000 and 7000 series also enjoy 3D capabilities, as does the 750 LCD set. Left out of the 3D fun? The 6500 LED and 650 LCD models — sorry gang. All models are reportedly Energy Star 4.0 compliant and the premium ones also come with Internet@Home with apps including Netflix. All the press releases after the break. While 3D is all the rage at CES this year, we learned today from the BDA that one of the biggest sources of 3D content isn’t what it could be. The first thing that could, should, be better is the limited support for frame rates. Movies have been recorded at 24 frames per second for longer than our parents have been alive, and for about the same amount of time we’ve had to endure frame rate interpolation to make movies play back on our 30Hz TVs — you know, like 3:2 pull-down. That changed recently with 120hz LCDs and 72Hz plasmas because those numbers share a common denominator with 24 (so the same frame is just shown three or four times). When choosing an 3D HDTV it is important to understand how the TV displays 24 fps 3D content, don’t just asume it does it without 3:2 pull down. But honestly the worst part is that some 3D cameras can capture 3D at higher frame rates and even if the director wanted to, the new 3D Blu-ray spec doesn’t support it. The other issue we take with the new spec is that contrary to early reports , it is possible to create a 3D Blu-ray Disc that won’t play on 2D only players. This next one isn’t a big deal, but still disappointing is that even if the creator goes through the trouble to encode the movie in both formats, depending on the HDTV, you may have no choice but to watch it in 3D — say if you lost your glasses or whatever. Now don’t get us wrong we’re pretty excited about the new 3D technology, but the way we see it is that anything worth doing, is worth doing right the first time. Here’s something you don’t see everyday: a projector with some sex appeal behind it. Casio ’s XJ-A Series is quite the looker by design. It’s pretty slim, too, measuring 43 mm in height. Your green friends can enjoy knowing it’s Merucury-free, and you can take solace in up to 3,000 lumens. Of the seven models in the lineup, two have WXGA and five XGA, and depending on your choice you’ll get USB or WiFi connectivity and a price tag between ?148,000 and ?318,000, or $1,5182 and $3,399 if converted to stateside currency. We’ve already seen a pico projector here at CES that packs 1GB of internal storage , but Syndiant and Foryou have now finally announced a new device that has an upgrade where it really counts: resolution. Unfortunately, it’s still just a prototype, and there’s no word about pricing or availability, but the projector does use Syndiant’s 1,024 x 600 resolution SYL2061 panel (pictured at right), and it still fits in a shirt pocket. 3M just got done pushing out its MPro 120 , and here at CES we’re already feasting our eyes on the MPro 150. For all intents and purposes, this is just an MPro 120 with 1GB of internal storage and a microSD expansion slot. We spotted it over at CES Unveiled, and while the VGA video wasn’t anything special, the ability to open and display PDFs, Excel files and PowerPoint documents (in addition to the traditional movie and audio files) was indeed a nice add for the traveling salesperson. Hit up the full release after the break if you’re thirsty for more details, and you should see it ship next month for just under $400. “With the adoption of flat panels in schools and businesses, expectations for what’s ‘bright enough’ have changed.” That’s the lead-off on the explanation for the new IN2100 and IN3100 series DLP projectors from InFocus, reasoning that we can definitely get behind. Both lines were initially announced back in 2008 and the 2100 line is now getting some subtle tweaks, longer-lasting bulbs, “dramatically increased” brightness, and more inputs for better institutional performance. The 3100 adds HDMI to the existing outputs, wireless connectivity using Wireless DisplayLink, and PC-free presenting from a USB stick via LitePort. Lower-end models in both series are available now, with the top-shelf entrants dropping later this quarter. IN2100 models start at $599 and IN3100 models begin at a rather spendier $1,499, but hey, it’s a business expense, right? Go crazy. We’ve just dropped by Panasonic ’s CES booth to watch several actors spokespersons showcasing Skype on a couple of VIERA Cast -enabled HDTVs, which will be available in March. Unlike what Skype previously told us, the webcams involved were only capturing average-quality VGA video at 22fps instead of 720p, and they’ll cost you a hefty $200 each if you happen to be a lucky owner of a VIERA Cast TV. If you’re at CES and just can’t stand wires, be sure to drop by the Haier booth where the company is showing off its completely wireless HDTV. Employing both Wireless Electricity technology developed at MIT, as well as Wireless Home Digital Interface (WHDI) this tube can supposedly stream video over 100 feet, but there’s no telling if that WiTricity signal will be as far reaching. All this technology does add a good bit of heft to the panel’s profile, so even though you might be avoiding that mess of tangled cables, don’t think you’re getting off that easy.
