Toshiba’s going all-in on the Blu-ray front here at CES and launching three new connected Blu-ray players: the BDX2500, the BDX2700 and the 3D-ready BDX3000. All three models do online streaming through a new partnership with CinemaNow; the $199 BDX2500 has a USB port for a wireless dongle, while the $249 BDX2700 and as-yet-unpriced BDX3000 have built-in WiFi. Expect the 2D models in the spring, and the three-dee unit in Q3. Full PR after the break. (That’s a pic of the current BDX2000, by the way — we’ll update with a new pic if the new ones look different.) Samsung’s 2010 Blu-ray players bring 3D, transparency & thinness

January 13th, 2010

Samsung has unveiled its latest family of Blu-ray players for 2010 topped by the BD-C6900 (above), compatible with both the 3D Blu-ray standard and the company’s existing 3D displays. If your guests aren’t thrilled by Full HD 3D and funky glasses they can always peek through the transparent cover and watch the disc spin. Also coming this year are the BD-C6500 with a promised 15-second boot time and disc load time, a new slim blu-ray champ with the BD-C7500 (after the break) and the low end BD-C5500. No word on prices or dates, but we’re sure these should be appearing on shelves around the time the weather warms up. HD DVD rides again: TCL brings China Blue HD & Blu-ray together for a CES face-off

January 13th, 2010

Ah, HD DVD, our old friend - we thought we’d never see you again . But there was no mistaking it, here’s the logo tucked away in Chinese manufacturer TCL’s booth on a China Blue HD deck next to a similar Blu-ray player. The Blu-ray demo appeared to be down when we stopped by making this not much of a fight — although with recent gains by CBHD like adding studio support from Paramount, it may want to take this challenger more seriously. We’ll move the threat level on this conflict to yellow. Sony has some new Blu-ray home theater systems and yes, one does 3D

January 11th, 2010

And you thought that just because you are the home theater in a box type that you wouldn’t get to enjoy 3D — Sony announced a trio of Blu-ray home theater systems that feature wireless speakers and the same internet streaming features BRAVIA Internet Video, DNLA and the iPhone app remote that the stand-alone Blu-ray from Sony do. And the top of the line BDV-HZ970W (pictured above) also supports 3D Blu-ray Discs. The other two new systems, the BDV-E770W and BDV-E570, have most of the same features, but both lack 3D and the BDV-E570 doesn’t do DLNA. Check out the full release after the break if you are still left asking for more. New Sony Blu-ray players do 3D, WiFi, iPhone remote, more

January 11th, 2010

Since releasing the initial Blu-ray players on the market years ago, has been lagging a little behind in regards to features. Today that’s about to change as the top of the line BDP-S770 (pictured above) not only supports 3D, but also has built in WiFi, and iPhone/iPod Touch app for a remote (in addition to the standard remote) and plenty of streaming options like Netflix , Amazon and many others. The BDP-S570 also has built in WiFi, but unlike the 770, it will require a firmware update before DLNA works. The BDP-S370 brings the line home which is similar to its bigger brothers but requires an optional WiFi adapter if you need wireless. LG’s 6.9mm thin LED-backlit LCD hands-on at CES

January 11th, 2010

Seagate has a 2.5-inch hard drive that measures 7mm thick . LG now has a big frickin’ television that’s even thinner. Today at the company’s CES 2010 press event , the “future” of LG’s TV business was briefly unveiled. At just 6.9mm thin, it’s easily one of the slimmest sets we’ve ever had the opportunity to ogle, and when speaking with executives afterwards, they confessed that more details would flow (including a real model name and estimated pricing) later in the year. As for availability? You could actually see this mythical creature and its 10mm bezel on store shelves by the end of this year , though we got the impression that it may ship first in Japan before heading Stateside. Oh, and we’re guessing LG will utilize that newly forged WHDI partnership to get this thing to operate wirelessly. After all, who has room for an HDMI socket when the whole chassis is slimmer than your pinky finger? LG’s 55-inch 3DTV is 3D (photo) ready too

January 11th, 2010

Taking 3D pictures with Fujifilm’s 3D point and shoot is pretty easy — even if ultimately unsatisfying — but if you need a place to display them, LG has that covered. Tucked away in its booth was a demo of “the world’s first 3D camera compatible HDTV” dutifully taking SD-card stored snaps and putting them on the big screen. Not an entirely complex process, but we figure if a better reviewed 3D camera makes it to market, you might appreciate picking up the right HDTV for the job. LG’s Infinia HDTV, Skype-enabled set and Mobile DTV-lovin’ DVD player hands-on

January 10th, 2010

LG’s 6.9mm HDTV stole the show, but a bevy of the company’s other new wares were on display (and in action) at its press conference . The Mobile DTV-enabled DVD player was actually streaming live television via the temporary tower established here in Vegas, and the video quality was surprisingly good with no perceived lag or pixelation. We also witnessed a live call, and while the quality was subpar due to the awful WiFi connection, the user interface and actual usability seemed satisfactory. Finally, the smattering of Infinia LCDs were downright dazzling, but given the competition, it’ll still be tough for these to break through in a world full of me-too sets. Have a peek below, won’t you? Upcoming Haier Blu-ray players are as intriguing as they are cheap

January 9th, 2010

Sponsors

We spotted Haier’s first U.S. entry into the Blu-ray player market luxuriating at Digital Experience following the company’s recent trend of surprisingly complete feature sets for low prices . The Broadcom-powered BDP100 and BDP200W are no great surprise, comparing closely with Best Buy’s recent Insignia players as Netflix streaming Blu-ray decks, the former without WiFi for $169 and the latter with wireless internet for $229. However they’re distinguished slightly by the addition of Pandora’s streaming music, plus plans to support apps/streaming from another provider or two around launch in the first quarter. What was promised but not shown this go round were some interesting features powered by the unit’s Flash compatibility, we’ll be sure to check them out on the CES floor today and report back on the experience as well as its other products, including a new LED edge lit line and Blu-ray/ combo TV with Netflix. For now, the press release and a couple of more images after the break. The BDP5110 and 5320 (pictured above) are both BD-Live players that add vTuner Internet radio as well, while the 5110 will arrive in Q1 for $169, the BDP5320 includes a WiFi dongle and should ship around the same time for $249. At the top of the line sits the BDP7320 (pictured after the break) with all of those features plus DLNA access to stream video from networked devices or PCs, due in Q2 for $279. Disney’s first 3D Blu-ray release to hit in the fourth quarter

January 8th, 2010

Yes you read that right, the studio with the most new 3D movies around isn’t going to release its first title until the fourth quarter of 2010. We’ve seen some cool 3D demos in past few days but lets face it, the technology is worthless without content. Now you might think that Disney would help launch 3D with a big hit like Toy Story 3 , but you’d be wrong. No instead it’ll all get kicked off with Disney’s A Christmas Carol — no we’re not feeling it either. Disney is the third studio to announce 3D content that’ll be released this year, and although none of them are up our alley, we’re sure someone is excited to see them. Panasonic’s other 2010 Blu-ray players keep making 2D look & sound better

January 7th, 2010

Not planning to make the jump to 3D this year? Panasonic is still working on hardware for you too. Continued revisions of the UniPhier processor and PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus hardware at their core to improve picture quality, reduce size & power consumption, and lower the bootup time from off to playing to just 14 seconds. The DMP-BD45 foregoes any VieraCast features beyond BD-Live hookups, while the BD65 and BD85 (above) add access to streaming services, expanded audio codec processing, and in the case of the BD85, additional hardware tweaks to keep audiophiles happy. Check the PR after the break for every detail except price and shipping dates — we won’t call you Luddites for living in a 3D-less world, just think (& Twitter) it. Panasonic packs a punch with portable Blu-ray player at CES (hands-on)

January 7th, 2010

Panasonic was showing off its new lineup of cameras and camcorders at its display table at Digital Experience, but that wasn’t what really caught our eyes. Nope, that honor went to the DMP-B500, a portable Blu-ray player that had both a killer screen and a (fairly) slim profile. Better yet, it doubles as a standalone Blu-ray player when you connect it to your TV, and it links up nicely with other VIERA products. Also on display was a WiFi photo frame with a built in CD player and a hidden iPod dock. Calendar and photo widgets looked nice on the crisp display, and let’s just put it this way, we don’t know how much we’d mind waking up to that in the morning. You don’t have to take our word for it though, check our the goods in our hands-on gallery. LG reveals Full HD 3D projector, Skype-enabled HDTVs and more at CES

January 7th, 2010

The show floor finally opened up here in Vegas today, and just as we knew they would, the product announcements are flowing hot and heavy. LG ’s one of today’s biggest players, unleashing a whole bevy of new kit that truly spans the gamut of consumer electronic sectors. Kicking things off is the CF3D, which is hailed as the planet’s first Full HD, 3D single lens type projector. As for specs, you’ll get 3D auto picture calibration, a twin engine, two HDMI 1.3 sockets, 300 ANSI lumens and a single USB input, while the XGA HX300G won’t do much of anyone outside of traveling salespeople much good. Moving on, there’s a little confirmation of the Skype news that we caught wind of yesterday; sure enough, a range of LG’s NetCast-enabled HDTVs will ship with Skype capabilities, though it sounds as if you’ll need to budget for a standalone camera. LG’s also making official that Mobile DTV-supporting DVD player that we first spotted at the tail end of last year, which will be in stores later this year for around $249. There’s plenty more to share on these — as well as a good bit surrounding a legion of new monitors — so hop on past the break if you just can’t get enough. HP Notebook Projection Companion stuffs a little bit of projection into a little bit of a projector

January 6th, 2010

Stepping across the not-so-fine line between regular projectors that you’d bring home to your parents and those rebellious pico affairs , HP’s Notebook Projection Companion offers up to 60-inches of LED-based projection at a range of up to 8.5 feet. It pumps light at 100 lumens and an 800:1 contrast ratio to put an SVGA 858 x 600 image up against the wall. The projector works with a standard VGA plug, and cuts a rather striking figure in its brushed aluminum shell. We spotted the “Companion” doing its thing in a relatively dimly lit room, and it certainly is a jump beyond a pico projector — it’s almost completely usable, in fact. We’d still probably prefer a large laptop screen for watching a movie, but if you’ve got to share a presentation or an experience, you could probably do worse than this $499 unit. It ships on January 15th. Light Blue Optics unveils Light Touch: a 10-inch touchscreen pico projector based on lasers (video)

January 5th, 2010

They promised us a device in 2010 and sure enough, Light Blue Optics just announced Light Touch. As the name implies, LBO’s product is a laser projector that turns any flat surface into an auto-focused and image-adjusted 10-inch touchscreen with WVGA resolution thanks to its laser- (not LED) based pico projection engine dubbed HLP (holographic laser projection) and infrared touch-sensing system. Light Touch runs Adobe Flash Lite 3.1 and includes WiFi and Bluetooth radios, 2GB of on-board storage (with microSD slot for up to 32GB more), and a battery capable of about 2-hours worth of runtime. We’ll be getting up close and personal with the mini projector here at CES so until then, feast your eyes on the simulated demo and usage scenarios after the break. "Senior-Friendly" TV Ears TV turns itself off at naptime, has Jitterbug-style remote

January 4th, 2010

Sure, you may scoff at a television designed especially for seniors, but we think members of the Greatest Generation deserve a little high definition in their golden years, and thankfully so does TV Ears. The company, which produces those wireless headsets you see advertised during The Price is Right, will soon be introducing the TV Ears TV, a 32-inch LCD with an integrated transmitter, meaning fewer confusing wires, doo-dads, whatsits, and thingamabobs. The set ships with a specially designed remote control (featuring a grand total of six buttons) and will turn itself off after four hours of inactivity, saving power when the user dozes off — or falls and can’t get up. The set will be available in March for $1,199 and, before you cry foul at the 300% markup over comparable youth-friendly sets, know that the price also includes delivery, installation, and a toll-free support number. Not having to be grandma’s personal television tech support? That’s the greatest gift of all.
