LG’s 6.9mm thin LED-backlit LCD hands-on at CES

January 11th, 2010

Seagate has a 2.5-inch hard drive that measures 7mm thick . LG now has a big frickin’ television that’s even thinner. Today at the company’s CES 2010 press event , the “future” of LG’s TV business was briefly unveiled. At just 6.9mm thin, it’s easily one of the slimmest sets we’ve ever had the opportunity to ogle, and when speaking with executives afterwards, they confessed that more details would flow (including a real model name and estimated pricing) later in the year. As for availability? You could actually see this mythical creature and its 10mm bezel on store shelves by the end of this year , though we got the impression that it may ship first in Japan before heading Stateside. Oh, and we’re guessing LG will utilize that newly forged WHDI partnership to get this thing to operate wirelessly. After all, who has room for an HDMI socket when the whole chassis is slimmer than your pinky finger? LG’s Infinia HDTV, Skype-enabled set and Mobile DTV-lovin’ DVD player hands-on

January 10th, 2010

LG’s 6.9mm HDTV stole the show, but a bevy of the company’s other new wares were on display (and in action) at its press conference . The Mobile DTV-enabled DVD player was actually streaming live television via the temporary tower established here in Vegas, and the video quality was surprisingly good with no perceived lag or pixelation. We also witnessed a live Skype call, and while the quality was subpar due to the awful WiFi connection, the user interface and actual usability seemed satisfactory. Finally, the smattering of Infinia LCDs were downright dazzling, but given the competition, it’ll still be tough for these to break through in a world full of me-too sets. Have a peek below, won’t you? 3M rolls out MPro 150 pocket projector with 1GB of inbuilt storage

January 8th, 2010

3M just got done pushing out its MPro 120 , and here at we’re already feasting our eyes on the MPro 150. For all intents and purposes, this is just an MPro 120 with 1GB of internal storage and a microSD expansion slot. We spotted it over at Unveiled, and while the VGA video wasn’t anything special, the ability to open and display PDFs, Excel files and PowerPoint documents (in addition to the traditional movie and audio files) was indeed a nice add for the traveling salesperson. Hit up the full release after the break if you’re thirsty for more details, and you should see it ship next month for just under $400. Samsung SyncMaster P2770HD has built-in TV tuner, sex appeal

December 3rd, 2009

Remember the Samsung P2370HD monitor? Well, this is it at 27 inches. How’s that for concision? Oh, you want more — well, Samsung must’ve expected you to, because it’s also added a TV tuner and a HDMI input to its latest Full HD display, to go along with a 5ms response time and a 50,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. There’s also a pair of 3 watt stereo speakers that can simulate 5.1 channel sound — good for emergencies or if you just can’t stand speakers cluttering up your desktop. Filling out the goodie bag are Picture In Picture and Picture By Picture modes, which should make good use of the extra real estate on the screen by combining, for example, your desktop with a TV source. The price is set at 549,000 Won (or about $473) for Korea, though global availability looks imminent so don’t rush to import it just yet. Switched On: Next steps toward the IP tuner

December 3rd, 2009

Switched On: The next step toward the IP tuner Ross Rubin ( @rossrubin ) contributes Switched On , a column about consumer technology. Five years ago, the first Switched On talked about the growing coziness between the iPod photo and video. Today, of course, the iPod and many other portable media players have embraced digitally-distributed video, yet the TV itself remains on the cusp of IP content distribution. But TV manufacturers that still shudder when they think of the WebTV experience of 1996 need to get their heads out of their modem ports. For the sake of video choice, it’s time to support the broadband web of 2009 on TVs. As we inch closer to the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in January, we come upon the first anniversary of the wedding between television sets and the internet. While there were internet-enabled before last year from HP and others, the online-enabled sets from Sony, Panasonic, Samsung and marked the real embrace of IP. And it wasn’t just about the hardware — the software included Yahoo’s widget architecture and Netflix streaming movies. Sony network Blu-ray player spied at CEDIA

September 13th, 2009

Why wait ’til October to get a peek at Sony’s BRAVIA Internet features come to Blu-ray on the BDP-N460 ? Check them out right now in the following gallery, we got a good look at the future on the CEDIA show floor, though whether Sony delivering all new hardware or everyone else’s strategy of upgrading existing players for Netflix, Amazon and other forms of streaming is the path to follow remains to be seen. The BDP-N460 should hit for about $250 starting next month. VIZIO Connected TV & VIZIO Internet App platform demoed at CEDIA

September 13th, 2009

With VIZIO’s first LED local dimming backlit HDTV just days away from debut and its first Connected TV nearing production, we were able to lay eyes and hands on the television and its funky QWERTY Bluetooth / IR combo remote. Check the pics and videos (including looks at VIZIO’s smaller LED sets ready to hit shelves this fall) for a look at our walkthrough; in the demos at least, the VIZIO Internet Apps platform was speedy and easy to use, however our experience with widgets so far has given us more than enough reason to wait for a full retail rollout before making any final decisions. One tidbit for those not ready to invest a whole new TV? The next iteration of VIZIO’s Blu-ray player should pack not only integrated Wi-Fi, but also the full VIA / widget experience. LG HS200 ‘pocket projector’ hands-on reveals an FM transmitter and embedded DivX surprise

September 7th, 2009

Small, bright, and wireless: a potent trifecta of win for an ultra-portable projector. LG’s new HS200 DLP projector is here at IFA sourcing DivX video off local USB media and throwing the audio over its embedded FM transmitter. And because it’s LED-based, it racks up numbers like 200 ANSI-Lumens and 30,000 hours of operation before burn-out — that’s 4 hours of operation per day for oh, say, 20 years. The 80-inch, 800×600 pixel moving image that we saw was reasonably bright in a demo-room where ambient lighting was on par with a daytime living room, curtains closed. The viewing and listening experience was more than passable, enjoyable even, and far superior to what you’ll get from a pico projector. Jacks include HDMI, RGB / component, and composite with an expected price of €499 when it lands in Europe this month (coming to the US a few months later). See it for yourselves in the video after the break. Toshiba makes timid Blu-ray showing at IFA, still believes in other forms of HD distribution

September 5th, 2009

Aside from the new JournE touch, the other main thrust at IFA’s booth is Blu-ray — at least, one would think. In reality, when we finally found the lone BDX2000, the LCD it was plugged into was off , while numerous DVD players and upscaling tech demos littered the surrounding booth area. Once we got a rep to turn it on for us, the Blu-ray player seemed to work just fine, as should be expected. The new Blu-ray equipped P500, however, wasn’t so successful: our colleagues at Engadget Spanish watched an attempted Blu-ray showing on the laptop go awry , and by the time we’d dropped by the booth, any Blu-ray models of the P500 had been pulled from the show floor due to crashiness. In talking with a Toshiba rep, it’s clear that the company hasn’t abandoned its ideas of internet distribution and other alternatives to the once rival format of Blu-ray. The company is looking into a solution that uses a Blu-ray disc and BD Live to stream internet media to the player, and has packed in decent codec support for playing back media off of the BDX2000’s SD card reader. We’re sure Toshiba will figure out its P500 woes before the laptop ships to consumers, but there’s no lack of interestingness in these first displays of Toshiba’s “commitment” to the Blu-ray format. Video: Sony confirms it’s ‘bringing home 3D’ starting in 2010

September 3rd, 2009

As it turns out, yesterday’s report was spot-on. Sony today announced that it is bringing the experience of looking absolutely ridiculous in 3D glasses home to the living room. The initiative is “starting in 2010″ and will expand through BRAVIA LCD HDTVs, VAIO machines, PlayStation 3, and Blu-ray discs… and not in the press release, but we clearly see a CyberShot digital camera in the promotional video (look out, Fujifilm ). It’s hard to say from the wording if all the listed product lines will go 3D next year, but from what we gather there’ll at least be BRAVIA sets in time for that Christmas. Curious see the zaniest video this side of the second dimension? Well, we don’t have that, but you can giggle your way through Sony’s promo after the break. Eyes-on Panasonic’s Full HD 3D plasma and Blu-ray combo

September 3rd, 2009

Sponsors

We just got a real eyeful of 3D, courtesy of Panasonic’s upcoming 1080p plasma and Blu-ray 3D setup. The system uses synced shutters, and was easily some of the best “consumer” 3D we’ve seen — almost on par with a theater experience, other than the fact that the screen was a whole lot smaller, at 103-inches. Unfortunately, while Panasonic is heavily touting 3D at IFA this year, just as Sony did at its own presser, there isn’t much hard news to show for it. The plasma and Blu-ray combo was actually announced a full year ago , and the only word we have on release at the moment is “next year.” Obviously, readily available 3D content plays a big part in this, and we get the impression that Avatar is syncing up nicely to be available on some sort of 3D home video format by the time it’s ready for a disc release — we’ve certainly seen enough teaser clips and trailers of it by now, anyway. To be honest, the 3D setup was seamless enough in our demo room that sometimes it hardly felt 3D. Avatar was especially “shallow” on the 3D scale (no pictures were allowed of the presentation, not that they would help), and we’ve yet to see anything mindblowing on that end. If anything, Panasonic’s presentation was more an opportunity to be “blown away” by the company’s awesome PowerPoint skills, if anything, so feel free to follow along in the gallery below. Philips 56-inch 21:9 3D TV’s future is so bright we had to wear shades

September 3rd, 2009

If you haven’t noticed, 3D is going to be big in 2010. Not at Philips though, at least not yet. Instead of charging in to the market like Sony, Philips is willing to hedge its bets and wait on consumer demand. Consumers, of course, are waiting for content. And hey, maybe everybody’s wrong and quad-HD will be the next big thing to drive TV sales. Regardless, Philips wants everyone to know that its technology is ready when you are so its got a 3D prototype Blu-ray player and stunning 3D version of its 56-inch Cinema 21:9 TV here at IFA in Berlin. While the idea of watching movies in 3D sounds like a novelty, the idea of gaming in 3D is downright compelling — awkward passive polarized glasses be damned! DirecTV, Cisco and Samsung have whole house DVR plans with RVU alliance

August 19th, 2009

Sponsors

One of our dreams is to have a true whole home DVR that allows us to watch any show we want, on any TV we want; but so far the perfect solution has alluded us. TiVo was really the first to try with its Multi-Room Viewing , but missed the mark by not giving us a single Now Playing list for the whole house or even any automatic conflict resolution between units. The FiOS HD DVR was the next disappointment because it limits us to two tuners and 160GB for the whole house — seriously is that enough for anyone? Currently Windows Media Center offers the best solution, but it’s expensive after you pay $300 a pop for a CableCARD tuner, not to mention it requires more maintenance because it is based on a PC. Needless to say we continue to look for the perfect solution, and we think that the RVU (R-vue) alliance might be just what we ordered. In addition to DirecTV, Cisco and Samsung, the chip maker Broadcom is also one of the founding members of the alliance, but it is their goals that get us excited. So excited, that we’d actually be shocked if they were actually achieved, but you’ll have to click through to learn why . Canon VIXIA HF S11 hands-on

August 19th, 2009

Is it just us, or are these flash-only camcorders getting bigger? Or maybe we’re just shrinking. Canon’s new VIXIA HF S11 AVCHD flagship certainly seems beefy — both in size and build — but we suppose that comes with the territory. Canon was showing a demonstration of the new stabilization tech, which can help mitigate the nauseating effects of shooting while walking, and if it works as well in practice as it did in the demo (unlikely), it could be a real lifesaver for part 24 of our ongoing Blair Witch Project remake. It’s hard to argue with the shooting time built-in and SDHC expandability on offer, but we suppose the HF S11 serves as a reminder that the gulf between “real” camcorders and their pocket cam brethren is indeed a wide one. VUDU’s streaming service demoed live on an LG TV

July 30th, 2009

We’ve seen it in the flesh, and we must say VUDU is doing things right with its move to a device-agnostic service. They haven’t chucked a single feature, and the interface is rather responsive for a TV-based video service (though not quite as flashy as its PS3 and Xbox 360 counterparts). Even with a bit of crummy hotel internet getting in the way, the device managed to buffer streams of 720p and 1080p content at a fairly rapid rate — besting a best-case-scenario Netflix buffer time in most cases. It’s clear that the 5.1 surround, 1080p-equipped HDX format, which can downgrade its bitrate based on available bandwidth, is really going to eat up your pipes, but the 720p looks quite good even in the face of a somewhat limited connection. While LG and Vizio are the jumping off point for this service, it’s VUDU’s stated aim to land on pretty much any home theater device that’ll have them — we can’t imagine Microsoft or Sony taking very kindly to the offer, but it’s hard to argue with this level of HD selection. Video of the service in action is after the break. Samsung 8500 series LCD TVs feature local-dimming LED backlights, Yahoo! widgets

July 30th, 2009

Sure, we might all just be getting used to LED-backlit LCD HDTVs , but this train ain’t stopping, Chico — Samsung just got official with the 8500 series, which features the next-generation of local-dimming LED backlights. The 54.6-inch and 45.9-inch 240Hz sets are just 1.6 inches deep and offer a 7,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, a 2ms response time, and an Energy Star 3.0 savings mode that continually adjusts the picture and backlight to optimize both picture quality and power savings. You’re also getting Samsung’s usual suite of connected TV features, like the Yahoo! Widget Engine, DivX playback, and DLNA support, but you’ll be paying handsomely for all this newness — the 45.9-inch UN46B8500’s MSRP is $3,599, while the 54.6-inch UN55B8500 will run you $4,499. Kodak’s 1080p Zi8 HD pocket camcorder in hand

July 30th, 2009

Yeah, you don’t really need 1080p in a compact like this. You know it, we know it. Kodak probably knows it too. Still, it’s always pretty wild to pick up a little piece like this and know it can shoot to a native resolution that our parents can’t even pronounce. The new Zi8 is certainly bulky for a “pocket” camcorder, but makes up for it by sporting a rechargeable battery, line-in audio jack, HDMI out, 2.5-inch LCD and even keeping the pop-out USB plug around for old times sake. The perks of face recognition for improved exposure and gyroscope-based image stabilization are also pretty snazzy at this $180 pricepoint. We still aren’t quite sold on the way this camera (like most of these compacts) processes video — it seems to do a lot of damage to frame-to-frame motion, something that Apple fought off pretty well with the iPhone 3GS — but we’re going to take one home and test it out a little before we throw down a verdict. How would you change HP’s Pavilion dv2?

May 23rd, 2009

AMD had (and still has, arguably) a lot riding on HP’s Pavilion dv2 , with it being the first notable machine to arrive with the outfit’s Neo platform . We’ve already heard what the so-called professionals think, but we’re interested to hear from the folks who really matter — the consumers. Is HP’s BD-friendly dv2 priced right? Is it sufficiently sexy? Is the 1.6GHz Athlon Neo MN-40 living up to the hype? Are you stoked with running Windows Vista on this? As with Sony’s VAIO P , this here “netbook” is definitely on the pricier end of things, so we’re pretty sure owners won’t hesitate to give HP a mouthful. The forum’s open, so speak!
