As Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets go, LG’s eXpo on AT&T is very near the cream of the crop — it’s got Snapdragon and a biometric scanner, after all — but we all know that the spec sheet doesn’t tell the whole story with this one. Oh sigh. We’d been hearing that Warner Brothers would be pushing for month-long rental delays for mail-order services in order to boost sales, and it looks like Netflix has been pushed into submission: under an agreement announced today, Warner Brother DVDs and Blu-rays won’t be available to Netflix subscribers for 28 days after they’re released for sale. What’s worse, Netflix says it expects to reach similar deals with the other major studios as time goes on. Why would Reed Hastings agree to a clear imposition on his company’s rights under the first-sale doctrine? We’re guessing this is the only way the studios would open up and allow more movies to hit Watch Instantly — and the AP says Netflix is also getting a discount on the actual discs. Yeah, it’s lame, but honestly we’d rather take more streaming content over new releases in the mail straight away, so let’s hope all this wheeling and dealing pays off. Ah, HD DVD, our old friend - we thought we’d never see you again . But there was no mistaking it, here’s the logo tucked away in Chinese manufacturer TCL’s booth on a China Blue HD deck next to a similar Blu-ray player. The Blu-ray demo appeared to be down when we stopped by making this not much of a fight — although with recent gains by CBHD like adding studio support from Paramount, it may want to take this challenger more seriously. We’ll move the threat level on this conflict to yellow. You didn’t think CES was over, did you? Saving a true gamer’s delight for last, we went along to meet with Microvision’s reps today and were introduced to its PicoP laser projector and gun gaming peripheral . The projection tech employed here is unique, as each pixel (848 x 480 resolution) is itself an RGB laser reflecting off a mirror which flips 60 times a second. What that results in is a permanently focused projection, no matter how much you wiggle, jiggle or maneuver the projector. The whole thing fits within 6cc and was designed to be embedded into phones. We snapped a few pics of the standalone projector and then moved on to the rifle gaming controller. Seagate has a 2.5-inch hard drive that measures 7mm thick . LG now has a big frickin’ television that’s even thinner. Today at the company’s CES 2010 press event , the “future” of LG’s TV business was briefly unveiled. At just 6.9mm thin, it’s easily one of the slimmest sets we’ve ever had the opportunity to ogle, and when speaking with executives afterwards, they confessed that more details would flow (including a real model name and estimated pricing) later in the year. As for availability? You could actually see this mythical creature and its 10mm bezel on store shelves by the end of this year , though we got the impression that it may ship first in Japan before heading Stateside. Oh, and we’re guessing LG will utilize that newly forged WHDI partnership to get this thing to operate wirelessly. After all, who has room for an HDMI socket when the whole chassis is slimmer than your pinky finger? Taking 3D pictures with Fujifilm’s 3D point and shoot is pretty easy — even if ultimately unsatisfying — but if you need a place to display them, LG has that covered. Tucked away in its booth was a demo of “the world’s first 3D camera compatible HDTV” dutifully taking SD-card stored snaps and putting them on the big screen. Not an entirely complex process, but we figure if a better reviewed 3D camera makes it to market, you might appreciate picking up the right HDTV for the job. LG’s 6.9mm HDTV stole the show, but a bevy of the company’s other new wares were on display (and in action) at its press conference . The Mobile DTV-enabled DVD player was actually streaming live television via the temporary tower established here in Vegas, and the video quality was surprisingly good with no perceived lag or pixelation. We also witnessed a live Skype call, and while the quality was subpar due to the awful WiFi connection, the user interface and actual usability seemed satisfactory. Finally, the smattering of Infinia LCDs were downright dazzling, but given the competition, it’ll still be tough for these to break through in a world full of me-too sets. Yes you read that right, the studio with the most new 3D movies around isn’t going to release its first title until the fourth quarter of 2010. We’ve seen some cool 3D demos in past few days but lets face it, the technology is worthless without content. Now you might think that Disney would help launch 3D with a big hit like Toy Story 3 , but you’d be wrong. No instead it’ll all get kicked off with Disney’s A Christmas Carol — no we’re not feeling it either. Disney is the third studio to announce 3D content that’ll be released this year, and although none of them are up our alley, we’re sure someone is excited to see them. 3M just got done pushing out its MPro 120 , and here at CES we’re already feasting our eyes on the MPro 150. For all intents and purposes, this is just an MPro 120 with 1GB of internal storage and a microSD expansion slot. We spotted it over at CES Unveiled, and while the VGA video wasn’t anything special, the ability to open and display PDFs, Excel files and PowerPoint documents (in addition to the traditional movie and audio files) was indeed a nice add for the traveling salesperson. Panasonic was showing off its new lineup of cameras and camcorders at its display table at Digital Experience, but that wasn’t what really caught our eyes. Nope, that honor went to the DMP-B500, a portable Blu-ray player that had both a killer screen and a (fairly) slim profile. Better yet, it doubles as a standalone Blu-ray player when you connect it to your TV, and it links up nicely with other VIERA products. Also on display was a WiFi photo frame with a built in CD player and a hidden iPod dock. Calendar and photo widgets looked nice on the crisp display, and let’s just put it this way, we don’t know how much we’d mind waking up to that in the morning. You’ll be familiar with the LG eXpo and its specs already — which include a slideout QWERTY keyboard and 1GHz Snapdragon under the hood — but we thought we’d go try the handset out for ourselves and tell you what we thought. Construction on this little machine was plenty sturdy to withstand the bumps associated with its unusual shape, while the keyboard slider mechanism had a reassuring feel to it. On the whole our impression was that you’ve got a middle of the road modern phone with a sales hook that depends on just how into projecting your images you are. Trust us, the sharp and large picture you may hope for from this device is possible only in very limited circumstances — even a moonlit night seems likely to mess with your enjoyment of the attached pico projector’s output. For the most part, you’ll have to be content with either watching 14-inch movies with the curtains drawn, or projecting ill-defined naughty pictures on the whiteboard while the teacher isn’t looking. Even if neither of those sounds like your kind of thing, feel welcome to peruse the hands-on gallery below. Stepping across the not-so-fine line between regular projectors that you’d bring home to your parents and those rebellious pico affairs , HP’s Notebook Projection Companion offers up to 60-inches of LED-based projection at a range of up to 8.5 feet. It pumps light at 100 lumens and an 800:1 contrast ratio to put an SVGA 858 x 600 image up against the wall. The projector works with a standard VGA plug, and cuts a rather striking figure in its brushed aluminum shell. We spotted the “Companion” doing its thing in a relatively dimly lit room, and it certainly is a jump beyond a pico projector — it’s almost completely usable, in fact. We’d still probably prefer a large laptop screen for watching a movie, but if you’ve got to share a presentation or an experience, you could probably do worse than this $499 unit. It ships on January 15th. The projector phone mishmash idea has been around (and even demonstrated ) for quite some time now, but only recently have we seen one of these two-pronged, hunchbacked monsters land on a major US carrier. LG’s eXpo is carrying that crown (or burden, depending on perspective), and while we’re itching to get one into our own labs for testing, we’ll happily pass along what looks to be the world’s first real good look at this handset in action. Make no mistake — the DLP-based beamer affixed on the back adds quite the bulge, but the actual video performance looks about as good as any dedicated pico projector that we’ve seen to date. Microvision just struck a deal to start shipping its PicoP-based SHOW WX pico projector in Asia, and while the size may not blow any minds, the image quality just might. With a native 848 x 480 resolution (WVGA), this one pumps out more pixels than pretty much any other pico projector on the market today, and with enough darkness, it can actually spit out an image that’s around 100-inches in size. We stopped by the company’s booth here at CEATEC in order to have a look at what makes the world’s first laser-based pico PJ so special, and we can honestly say the picture was pretty stunning (considering the device we’re talking about). We got a lecture on just how amazing the innards actually are (hear for yourself after the break), but it’s the estimated $500 price tag and 2010 US ship date that really had us intrigued. The company also confessed that it’s toiling away in an effort to miniaturize its PicoP engine even further, and while it wouldn’t come right out and say it, we got the feeling that it was jonesing to get that very device into all sorts of other gizmos in the near future. In the meanwhile, you can expect the SHOW WX to ship with support for pretty much any input via a composite adapter, while an iPod / iPhone connector is apt to be bundled in as well. There’s also a 3.5 millimeter audio passthrough, 10 lumens of brightness, a 60Hz refresh rate (trust us, the lines you see in the video aren’t seen by the naked eye) and a built-in battery good for two hours on a charge. Oh, and this thing’s ability to refocus instantly as you move it closer and farther from the wall is pretty swank — just sayin’. The Esprimo Q1500 , which might remind you of a Mac Mini , is back with the mischievous intent to show off the wares that Apple won’t let you have . Though we suspected the Intel CPU inside would be a CULV variant, it turns out to be no less than a 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo T9600 — and it got a good workout by the awesome Engadget Spanish crew, who ran a 720p video in Windows Media Player alongside a Blu-ray movie without any hiccups. The good news extends to the machine itself, which remained quiet in operation and cool to the touch a full 10 minutes into its mini torture test. Aside from the new JournE touch, the other main thrust at IFA’s booth is Blu-ray — at least, one would think. In reality, when we finally found the lone BDX2000, the LCD it was plugged into was off , while numerous DVD players and upscaling tech demos littered the surrounding booth area. Once we got a rep to turn it on for us, the Blu-ray player seemed to work just fine, as should be expected. The new Blu-ray equipped P500, however, wasn’t so successful: our colleagues at Engadget Spanish watched an attempted Blu-ray showing on the laptop go awry , and by the time we’d dropped by the booth, any Blu-ray models of the P500 had been pulled from the show floor due to crashiness. In talking with a Toshiba rep, it’s clear that the company hasn’t abandoned its ideas of internet distribution and other alternatives to the once rival format of Blu-ray. The company is looking into a solution that uses a Blu-ray disc and BD Live to stream internet media to the player, and has packed in decent codec support for playing back media off of the BDX2000’s SD card reader. We’re sure Toshiba will figure out its P500 woes before the laptop ships to consumers, but there’s no lack of interestingness in these first displays of Toshiba’s “commitment” to the Blu-ray format.
