The Esprimo Q1500 , which might remind you of a Mac Mini , is back with the mischievous intent to show off the wares that Apple won’t let you have . Though we suspected the Intel CPU inside would be a CULV variant, it turns out to be no less than a 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo T9600 — and it got a good workout by the awesome Engadget Spanish crew, who ran a 720p video in Windows Media Player alongside a Blu-ray movie without any hiccups. The good news extends to the machine itself, which remained quiet in operation and cool to the touch a full 10 minutes into its mini torture test. If we said prices for the top config might be a little cheaper than expected, would you finally be excited? Video after the break. We’re still curious to see how well the integrated projector in Nikon’s Coolpix S1000pj does under real-world lighting and usage conditions, but it sure seems pretty in the controlled environment of the company’s IFA booth. The crew from Engadget Spanish say the novel cam is a lot thinner than you’d expect — check out the video and a gallery of sample shots after the break. Small, bright, and wireless: a potent trifecta of win for an ultra-portable projector. LG’s new HS200 DLP projector is here at IFA sourcing DivX video off local USB media and throwing the audio over its embedded FM transmitter. And because it’s LED-based, it racks up numbers like 200 ANSI-Lumens and 30,000 hours of operation before burn-out — that’s 4 hours of operation per day for oh, say, 20 years. The 80-inch, 800×600 pixel moving image that we saw was reasonably bright in a demo-room where ambient lighting was on par with a daytime living room, curtains closed. The viewing and listening experience was more than passable, enjoyable even, and far superior to what you’ll get from a pico projector. Jacks include HDMI, RGB / component, and composite with an expected price of €499 when it lands in Europe this month (coming to the US a few months later). See it for yourselves in the video after the break. My my, we’ve seen heatsinks bigger than this latest Esprimo Mini PC from Fujitsu. The Q1500 might look like your run-of-the-mill underpowered nettop , but its makers have successfully crammed a mobile Core 2 Duo CPU and a slot-loading Blu-ray drive inside to make one hell of an appealing little goer. 4GB of memory and a 320GB hard drive fill out the generous spec, and yes, there’s a HDMI out as well. Basically, you’re looking at a Timeline laptop adapted to the desktop, which would also suggest that the unknown Intel CPUs are of the CULV variety . Of course, all that grunt won’t come cheap and the base Core 2 Solo, DVD drive-packing option will start prices off at €699 ($998) when these hit Germany later this month. Philips has definitely shifted most of its consumer electronics efforts into continents not named North America, but given that IFA’s taking place in Berlin, it makes sense to see so much new kit flowing from the company. The latest wares to make their debut on the show floor is the BDP9500 and BDP7500 Blu-ray players, both of which handle 7.1 audio with poise and offer up 1080p video playback for those with BD libraries. The flagship 9500 also includes a Qdeo video processor and a sleek aluminum shell, not to mention Burr-Brown analog-to-digital converters and DVD upscaling for those other movies . There’s no mention of pricing and availability just yet, but with the holiday shopping season just around the bend, we’d guess the folks at Philips are working hard to get these out on the double [Warning: PDF read link] Filed under: Home Entertainment Philips gets stylish with BDP9500 and BDP7500 Blu-ray players originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 04 Sep 2009 05:53:00 EST. We just got a real eyeful of 3D, courtesy of Panasonic’s upcoming 1080p plasma and Blu-ray 3D setup. The system uses synced shutters, and was easily some of the best “consumer” 3D we’ve seen — almost on par with a theater experience, other than the fact that the screen was a whole lot smaller, at 103-inches. Unfortunately, while Panasonic is heavily touting 3D at IFA this year, just as Sony did at its own presser, there isn’t much hard news to show for it. The plasma and Blu-ray combo was actually announced a full year ago , and the only word we have on release at the moment is “next year.” Obviously, readily available 3D content plays a big part in this, and we get the impression that Avatar is syncing up nicely to be available on some sort of 3D home video format by the time it’s ready for a disc release — we’ve certainly seen enough teaser clips and trailers of it by now, anyway. To be honest, the 3D setup was seamless enough in our demo room that sometimes it hardly felt 3D. Avatar was especially “shallow” on the 3D scale (no pictures were allowed of the presentation, not that they would help), and we’ve yet to see anything mindblowing on that end. If anything, Panasonic’s presentation was more an opportunity to be “blown away” by the company’s awesome PowerPoint skills, if anything, so feel free to follow along in the gallery below. Panasonic’s PT-AE3000 has gone over quite well in the home theater space, with its 1080p resolution and gorgeous image quality winning over more than a few projector junkies. But given that there’s always room for improvement, the outfit has today introduced the PT-AE4000, an ever-so-slightly refreshed version that looks essentially identical to its predecessor. The Full HD native resolution and 1,600 ANSI lumens remain unchanged, though the contrast ratio has been bumped from 60,000:1 to 80,000:1 and Panny has outfitted it with a new “red rich lamp” and dynamic iris. Finally, this beamer supposedly eliminates those nasty Cinemascope issues that some users were seeing on the AE3000, though the estimated ?2,000 ($3,255) asking price still feels a bit steep when you consider the alternatives . If you haven’t noticed, 3D is going to be big in 2010. Not at Philips though, at least not yet. Instead of charging in to the market like Sony, Philips is willing to hedge its bets and wait on consumer demand. Consumers, of course, are waiting for content. And hey, maybe everybody’s wrong and quad-HD will be the next big thing to drive TV sales. Regardless, Philips wants everyone to know that its technology is ready when you are so its got a 3D prototype Blu-ray player and stunning 3D version of its 56-inch Cinema 21:9 TV here at IFA in Berlin. While the idea of watching movies in 3D sounds like a novelty, the idea of gaming in 3D is downright compelling — awkward passive polarized glasses be damned! The jury is still out on whether 200 / 240hz motion technology (last year’s prototype pictured above) provided an appreciable difference but that won’t stop Samsung from bringing 400 / 480hz (PAL / NTSC standards) LCD HDTVs to IFA 2009 next month. This is the second time we’ve heard rumors of a spec bump in motion technology, using black frame insertion instead of more complicated (& expensive) tech to create new frames from existing ones. LG has already demo’d its 480hz LCDs and the two will surely race to get a bigger number on store shelves, but we’ll need an eye-on before determining if it’s an upgrade worth waiting for. We’ve been waiting for what seems like ages for the next iteration of the XEL-1 to dash in and swoop us off of our feet, but frankly, we’re growing anxious. As the world waits for a commercial-ready OLED TV that’s larger than a standard sheet of paper, industry insiders down at the IFA briefings in Malta this past week believe that Sony could be gearing up to make all sorts of hopes and dreams come true this September. Jens Heithecker, executive director of Messe Berlin, which organizes the IFA trade fair, noted that “IFA is a trade show which is focused more on market-ready technologies,” hinting that anything we see in just a few short months will be prepared for release into the wild. We’re also told that more “ultra-widescreen” 21:9 sets — like Philips’ masterpiece — could be on display, not to mention scores of internet-ready HDTVs and a Samsung set with refresh rates of 400Hz. Needless to say, IFA’s shaping up to be quite a show for the television sector, so you may want to think twice (or thrice, if necessary) about snagging a new panel on August 31st.
