BBC’s iPlayer streams to Cello iViewer HDTVs, those iElsewhere get iNothing

December 9th, 2009

Hopefully you haven’t exceeded your daily allowance of the letter ‘i’ yet this morning; this post could push you into CamelCase overload. British electronics maker Cello has announced iViewer, a line of LCD HTDVs available in ?399 ($650) 26- and ?499 ($815) 32-inch models that will directly stream BBC’s iPlayer , no silly gaming console or set-top box required. They’ll also stream a variety of other digital channels, including YouTube and American CNN — so why is it that Americans still can’t stream content from the Beeb? Sets will be selling soon exclusively at Marks and Spencer stores, and would have been available months ago if not for a delay thanks to an unidentified but apparently American chip maker. Sure, blame the US. Everything’s our fault. BBC’s iPlayer streams to Cello iViewer HDTVs, those iElsewhere get iNothing originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 09 Dec 2009 09:56:00 EST. VUDU ditches the box, integrates into LG’s LH50 NetCast HDTVs

August 1st, 2009

After a quick test run on Entone’s IPTV boxes , VUDU has now done the deed with a big time player. In a joint announcement today with LG , the outfit is announcing its first major foray into STB-less movie streaming. LG’s Netflix-friendly LH50 line of connected HDTVs will act as the hosts, with VUDU’s tried and true high-def streaming service acting as the highly anticipated guest. The outfit’s next generation movie platform will enable owners of the 47LH50, 50PS80, 60PS80 and 42LH50 to buy or rent HD and HDX (1080p) films on demand through a refreshed user interface that promises no stutters or buffering waits. The new VUDU also brings along instant fast forward and rewind as well as instant start for all movie qualities, and as before, there’s no monthly fee associated with the service. Eager to dive on in? It’ll be made available for everyone (existing owners included) starting next month, and just so you know, we definitely don’t envision LG being the last TV maker to slip under VUDU’s covers. The full release is after the break. Update: From the sounds of Vudu’s solo PR , the LG sets are just the first off the line, so we’d expect a few more manufacturers to partner up soon. LG introduces stylish, LED-backlit 22-inch W2286L LCD HDTV

July 1st, 2009

By and large, there’s nothing too incredible about LG ’s latest HDTV. It’s 22-inches, can double as a PC monitor, boasts a deceiving 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and consumes some 40 percent less power than the average Earth-hating 22-inch . There’s also a pair of HDMI sockets, a DVI port and a 1,680 x 1,050 resolution, not to mention an automatic brightness sensor that responds to ambient light. There’s no word yet on how pricey the 20 millimeter-thick set will be nor when it’ll ship stateside, but hopefully it — along with its 24-inch Full HD sibling — will make the trip in short order. VIZIO introduces new XVT, M and E series HDTVs

June 9th, 2009

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve seen any new kit from the cats at VIZIO , but it has evidently been hoarding up sets in anticipation for today. This morning, the company has let loose details on a veritable smorgasbord of new TVs, all of which fall within the XVT, M and E series. The XVT line is getting a boost from the new TruLED VF551XVT, which packs 240Hz dejudder technology, as well as a number of other companions ranging from 32- to 55-inches in size. The M series is amongst the prettiest of the bunch, boasting a JAVA design, panels and 120Hz technology. Finally, the E series (E is for Eco, get it?) sucks down far less energy than most, with screen sizes spanning from 19- to 42-inches. Far too many new sets are being unveiled to detail here, but you can feel free to dig in after the break. LG’s LH55 series of 1080p, 240Hz LCDs now shipping

May 28th, 2009

Remember all those LCDs LG flooded us with at CES earlier this year? Another set of them is shipping, the LH55 models in sizes ranging from 37- to 55-inches. These don’t have any of the fancy internet connectivity or wireless HDMI tricks offered by some of the company’s more flash sets, but all offer 1080p resolutions at TruMotion 240Hz refresh rates, 80,000:1 contrast ratios, and other niceties like auto-calibration and Clear Voice II, which pledges to ensure dialogue doesn’t get washed out by heavyhanded soundtracks. They’re all Energy Star 3.0 certified, too, so you’ll feel a little more green while watching that Discovery Earth Blu-ray on a television that’s almost five feet on the diagonal. MSRPs range from $1,399 up to $3,899, so get bargain hunting. Hitachi details UltraVision and Alpha LCD HDTV lines

May 28th, 2009

Unlike practically ever other brand, Hitachi didn’t take the wraps off of its 2009 HDTV line at CES. Instead, it waited until summer officially began, and we can’t really argue with the tactic. At any rate, the company is following , LG and Sony with their respective HD news by announcing new members in the long-standing UltraVision line (shown left) as well as the Alpha series (shown right). In the former, we’ll soon see the 55-inch L55S603 ($1,799), 46-inch L46S603 ($1,299) and 42-inch L42S503 ($999) hit the streets (in September, August and June, respectively), while the Alpha crew contains the 42-inch L42A403 ($849) and the 32-inch L32A403 ($499), both of which ship this month. The UltraVision sets all boast 1080p panels, 120Hz dejudder technology, up to five HDMI sockets and built-in ATSC / QAM / NTSC TV tuners. As for the Alphas, you’ll find a total of seven HD inputs (four HDMI), a 1080p panel on the fat kit and a 720p display on the little guy. Icron’s ExtremeUSB-based PC-on-TV tech goes wireless

May 27th, 2009

Icron ’s PC-on-TV solution has been out and about since late last year, but we’d venture to say that adoption in the consumer market has been minimal at best. ‘Course, the bevy of internet-to-TV set-top boxes that have emerged in the meanwhile certainly haven’t help its cause, and the whole “wired Ethernet” requirement was also a real deal-breaker, ladies. Now, it seems as if the company is looking to leapfrog those who leapfrogged it by showcasing a wireless (802.11n) solution at the Connections Digital Living Conference. The product is still based around its ExtremeUSB technology, which passes along VGA / USB signals from a PC to a TV so that your computer can be fully seen and controlled on your den’s HDTV. Unfortunately, two critical data points are still missing: first, there’s no expected release date, and second, there’s no independent reports on how well all of this works sans cabling. JVC ships 42-inch LT-42WX70: $2,399.95 for more colors than you’ll ever notice

May 27th, 2009

JVC seemed pretty proud of its LT-42WX70 back at CES, and while some may consider this unit’s main selling point a fillip, graphic professionals will likely disagree. The Xiview LT-42WX7 is a 42-inch 120Hz 1080p panel which targets imaging junkies and those who just can’t get enough of those wild, vivacious colors seen in Family Guy re-runs. Said display covers 96 percent of the Adobe RGB color space, theoretically making it suitable for image editing. If you’re buying all that, you can voice your support right now with $2,399.95. Full release is after the break. Sony debuts connected BRAVIA Z5500 LCD HDTV line

April 30th, 2009

And the hits just keep on comin’. Shortly after Sony introduced its connected BRAVIA W-Series to the world, in flies yet another trio: the Z5500 line. Arriving in 40-inch, 46-inch and 52-inch models, the set boasts Motionflow 200Hz technology, DLNA certification, the outfit’s BRAVIA Engine 3, its own ‘draw the LINE’ design concept, a 1080p panel and a CI Plus interface, which only those parked overseas will truly understand. Furthermore, there’s an integrated MPEG-4/AVC HD tuner, BRAVIA Sync (HDMI-CEC), an auto shut-off function, a dedicated ‘Energy Saving Switch’ and — for the first time — AppliCast. If you’re curious, the latter feature enables users to access a range of online services (RSS feeds and all sorts of other widgets) via the built-in Ethernet jack. Sony didn’t bother to share a price, release date or any hope of a US debut, but we’ll be keeping our eyes peeled. JVC intros 1080p GD-463D10 3D LCD monitor in Japan

April 14th, 2009

Sponsors

Not that JVC ’s been avoiding the 3D bandwagon or anything , but it has yet to formally introduce a 3D HDTV to really take advantage of the in-home 3D revolution that 3D backers just swear is right around the bend. The GD-463D10 is a 46-inch LCD HDTV with a native 1,920 x 1080 resolution, 2,000:1 contrast ratio, twin ten-watt speakers and support for three-dee material. We’re also told that the set will come bundled with a pair of polarized glasses when it ships in Japan early next month. The only problem? That ?700,000 ($6,978) price tag, which seems particularly painful with no real 3D programming to speak of. Yet , of course. Samsung begins production on edge-lit LED-backlit HDTV panels

March 27th, 2009

Samsung ’s being a bit ambiguous with this one, but we won’t deny that we’re drooling pretty heavily over these new panels. Said outfit has just revealed that mass production has begun on the industry’s first “ultra-slim LCD panels suited for large size TVs,” and while we’re wondering what exactly it means by that, we can’t help but appreciate the attributes. We’re told that the unique edge-lit LED backlighting offers lighter weight and thinner designs compared to standard direct-lit LED LCDs, and moreover, a 55-inch Samsung HDTV with edge-lit LED backlighting “uses up to 40 percent less power than conventional LCD TVs.” The panels measure just 0.42-inches thick and are being produced in 40-, 46- and 55-inch sizes. We’re still waiting to hear back from Sammy on whether these are the same ones used in the energy-efficient LCD HDTVs announced at CES or new models altogether, but ’til then, you can feel free to start digging in the couches for spare pennies. Mitsubishi affirms that LaserVue HDTV production is back on

March 27th, 2009

Sponsors

After Mitsubishi suddenly and unexpectedly suspended production of its flagship LaserVue HDTV in early February, many took the liberty of believing that the end was nigh for this extremely high-end set (given the not-exactly-booming economy). We contacted Mitsubishi in order to follow up, and today we’ve received direct confirmation that the LaserVue is indeed “back in production.” In other words, the supply channels are all moving smoothly again, and whatever caused the issue to begin with truly was simply a snag and not a foreshadowing of the set’s death. Too bad this thing is still up near seven grand in many places — after seeing one in action, it’s hard to look at any other technology the same way.
