VIZIO sure ends up in a whole lot of legal battles , but one way or another, it always seems to find its way out in the long run. Such is the case once again today, as the current LCD TV king has apparently said all the right things to Sony. If you’ll recall, Sony (along with a slew of others) filed suit against Vizio awhile back over patent licensing concerns, but now it seems the two have reached a mutual agreement to use each other’s technologies without bickering over who owns what. The release on the matter states that Sony “has become a licensee under VIZIO’s patent portfolio,” and that ” VIZIO now is a licensee under Sony’s color television patent portfolio.” Who knows how much under-the-table cash and shaky promises had to be passed along in order to make everyone happy, but hey, a problem solved is a problem solved. [Image courtesy of TooMuchNick / WireImage] Update : Sony’s response to all of this is after the break, courtesy of a company spokesperson who pinged us directly. Look, we know this 3D thing is as likely to sink as it is to swim right now, but we have to hand it to Samsung — it’s pursuing the idea with some pretty hefty ambition. A 55-inch 1080p panel with a true 240Hz refresh rate is a decent base on which to build your paradigm-shifting new offering. Using a set of “shutter” glasses, which rapidly alternate between blocking out the left and right eye, the set is capable of delivering the full 240Hz quality, debatable as its benefits may be . Of course, the value or otherwise of a TV like this is going to be found only by experiencing its output in person, so if you’re somewhere near Seoul this week, head on down to the IMID 2009 conference to get an eyeful of an early model. Jumpin’ Jehosaphat! We know exchange rates have been sort of crazy of late, but we can say with a good deal of certainty that the in-home 3D revolution isn’t going anywhere with MSRPs like this. After introducing the 46-inch GD-463D10 3D LCD HDTV in various overseas markets, JVC is announcing here at CEDIA that its flagship 3D panel is now available on US soil for a solid chunk of change. The 1080p display touts a 2,000:1 contrast ratio, three HDMI sockets, 178-degree viewing angles, a depth of 1.5-inches and two incredibly awesome sets of 3D goggles. If you’re not concerned that actual 3D content is all but nonexistent for home users, you can snag this now for $9,153 (and not a penny more). After a quick test run on Entone’s IPTV boxes , VUDU has now done the deed with a big time player. In a joint announcement today with LG , the outfit is announcing its first major foray into STB-less movie streaming. LG’s Netflix-friendly LH50 line of connected HDTVs will act as the hosts, with VUDU’s tried and true high-def streaming service acting as the highly anticipated guest. The outfit’s next generation movie platform will enable owners of the 47LH50, 50PS80, 60PS80 and 42LH50 to buy or rent HD and HDX (1080p) films on demand through a refreshed user interface that promises no stutters or buffering waits. The new VUDU also brings along instant fast forward and rewind as well as instant start for all movie qualities, and as before, there’s no monthly fee associated with the service. Eager to dive on in? It’ll be made available for everyone (existing owners included) starting next month, and just so you know, we definitely don’t envision LG being the last TV maker to slip under VUDU’s covers. The full release is after the break. Update: From the sounds of Vudu’s solo PR , the LG sets are just the first off the line, so we’d expect a few more manufacturers to partner up soon. By and large, there’s nothing too incredible about LG ’s latest LCD HDTV. It’s 22-inches, can double as a PC monitor, boasts a deceiving 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and consumes some 40 percent less power than the average Earth-hating 22-inch LCD . There’s also a pair of HDMI sockets, a DVI port and a 1,680 x 1,050 resolution, not to mention an automatic brightness sensor that responds to ambient light. There’s no word yet on how pricey the 20 millimeter-thick set will be nor when it’ll ship stateside, but hopefully it — along with its 24-inch Full HD sibling — will make the trip in short order. Icron ’s PC-on-TV solution has been out and about since late last year, but we’d venture to say that adoption in the consumer market has been minimal at best. ‘Course, the bevy of internet-to-TV set-top boxes that have emerged in the meanwhile certainly haven’t help its cause, and the whole “wired Ethernet” requirement was also a real deal-breaker, ladies. Now, it seems as if the company is looking to leapfrog those who leapfrogged it by showcasing a wireless (802.11n) solution at the Connections Digital Living Conference. The product is still based around its ExtremeUSB technology, which passes along VGA / USB signals from a PC to a TV so that your computer can be fully seen and controlled on your den’s HDTV. Unfortunately, two critical data points are still missing: first, there’s no expected release date, and second, there’s no independent reports on how well all of this works sans cabling. JVC seemed pretty proud of its LT-42WX70 back at CES, and while some may consider this unit’s main selling point a fillip, graphic professionals will likely disagree. The Xiview LT-42WX7 is a 42-inch 120Hz 1080p panel which targets imaging junkies and those who just can’t get enough of those wild, vivacious colors seen in Family Guy re-runs. Said display covers 96 percent of the Adobe RGB color space, theoretically making it suitable for image editing. If you’re buying all that, you can voice your support right now with $2,399.95. Full release is after the break. Cute Sharp , real cute. Brag about releasing the world’s first 20-inch LCD HDTV with a built-in Blu-ray player , but don’t even mention to consumers that they won’t have the luxury of seeing their flicks in full resolution. For reasons unknown, the latest set in the AQUOS DX range does indeed pack a remarkably convenient integrated BD player, but the 1,366 x 768 resolution makes the whole thing sort of pointless. As Liz Lemon would say: “That’s a deal-breaker, ladies.” At any rate, folks who snap one up in Japan will also find a digital TV tuner, DVD support, a 1,500:1 contrast ratio and 450 nits of brightness. It’ll be available in black (LC-20DX1-B) and white (LC-20DX1-W) for ?150,000 ($1,593) at the tail end of next month in the Land of the Rising Sun. Philips may be dodging the North American sector with its flashiest of products , but it’s still showing the Yanks in attendance a little love on the home entertainment front. Today in a meeting in NYC, the outfit revealed US pricing and availability for its entire 2009 family, most of which was quietly introduced in January. Starting things off are the 6000 and 7000 Series of HDTVs, which just so happen to pick right up where the previous models left off in 2008. The 6000 Series will arrive in 32-, 42- and 47-inch flavors for $799, $1,399 and $1,699, respectively, while the 7000 Series goes 42-, 47- and 52-inch for $1,499, $1,799 and $2,299, also respectively. While checking these very sets out, we noticed that the factory settings left the colors a bit blown out and overly sharp — though, this practice is far too common in HDTV companies anyway. Nothing like wowing those Best Buy shoppers at first, only to sear their retinas at home, right? All kidding aside, the panels looked superb, and the A-B comparison mode made tweaking the settings a breeze. Hop on past the break for the rest of the details, and give our gallery a glance for a closer look at the whole lot. With Mitsubishi ’s LaserVue lines humming along once more, it’s time for the company to bust out a few more big announcements in the HDTV space. First up is the new Unisen line, comprised of the 151 Series (40-, 46- and 52-inches), the 153 Series (40-, 46- and 52-inches) and the high-end Diamond 259 Series (46- and 52-inches). Each set in the line comes with a built-in “5.1-channel” 16-speaker audio bar, much like the iSP LT-52149 that we reviewed last fall . Each model also incorporates a new UltraThin Frame design, Smooth 120Hz Film Motion technology, four HDMI 1.3a inputs and a USB media port. The top end crew also includes an iSP calibration microphone, Plush1080p 5G 18-bit digital video processing, a wired IR input and a few swank blue accents to really woo the ladies. The whole family should ship to the United States next month and range from $1,799 to $3,299. Exact pricing is just after the break. Samsung ’s being a bit ambiguous with this one, but we won’t deny that we’re drooling pretty heavily over these new panels. Said outfit has just revealed that mass production has begun on the industry’s first “ultra-slim LCD panels suited for large size TVs,” and while we’re wondering what exactly it means by that, we can’t help but appreciate the attributes. We’re told that the unique edge-lit LED backlighting offers lighter weight and thinner designs compared to standard direct-lit LED LCDs, and moreover, a 55-inch Samsung HDTV with edge-lit LED backlighting “uses up to 40 percent less power than conventional LCD TVs.” The panels measure just 0.42-inches thick and are being produced in 40-, 46- and 55-inch sizes. We’re still waiting to hear back from Sammy on whether these are the same ones used in the energy-efficient LCD HDTVs announced at CES or new models altogether, but ’til then, you can feel free to start digging in the couches for spare pennies.
