Bang & Olufsen’s BeoVision 10: something awesome in the state of Denmark (update: video!)

December 6th, 2009

If you’re an HDTV buff with style, taste, and money to burn (and if you’re reading Engadget we have our doubts about at least two of the three) then you’ve probably been waiting impatiently for Bang & Olufsen to make this one official. The BeoVision 10 is a wall-mounted LCD flat screen that boasts 40-inches of real estate, a brushed aluminum frame, and bottom mounted speakers that are available in a variety of colors. As the company boasts, “every aspect of the design is thought through.” It also said something about “v?gplacering,” the definition of which we will leave to your imagination. On sale now at the B & O store on Kongens Nytorv in central Copenhagen for 43,495 Danish Kroner (roughly $8,700) — not shockingly expensive, as far as this company is concerned, but still far too dear for you. No word on stateside pricing or release date. Update: As several astute readers pointed out, the translated source for this one listed the price in British Pounds when it should have been listed in Danish Kroner (DKK). The thing is far less expensive now — so feel free to send us one for an early Christmas present! You have the address. Oh, and a vid is after the break! Sony TRIMASTER quad-HD LCD multiplies the resolution, and the price, of any home HDTV

October 6th, 2009

Can’t wait until December for Toshiba’s CELL LCD ? Sony is bringing its own 56-inch 3,840×2160 quad-HD display to market November 1 in Japan. Priced at 6,825,000 ($76,583) including taxes this is clearly for pros only, hence the TRIMASTER name referring to the three elements combined within — exact color, accurate picture and reliability — thanks to a RGB LED backlit panel built with incredible picture reproduction and exact calibration (with included software via a connected PC) in mind. While it’s cheaper than JVC’s $175k 4K projector , unless you’re mastering the next Pixar flick, viewing high res satellite imagery or can’t live without four HD feeds on one screen even the most well heeled amongst may be better served scouring bargain bins for a used Westinghouse D56QX1 for now. HYPOLED develops mega-tiny VGA projector display, has a tiny coin in the photo to prove it

October 5th, 2009

HYPOLED, an 18-month-old project tasked with creating OLED microdisplays for upcoming pico projectors , has just released a report of its recent progress. Among the advances is a Fraunhofer IPMS-designed all digital VGA, full color OLED microdisplay backplane with matching pico projector optics. The display measures just 0.18-mm thick and is already in prototype manufacturing. The super miniscule display is connected to a MediaBox enabling it to operate via WiFi. Fraunhofer is now expected to begin developing a prototype of the full projector, meaning that with any luck, our picos should be getting a teensy, tiny bit cooler in the near future. Philips 56-inch 21:9 3D TV’s future is so bright we had to wear shades

September 3rd, 2009

If you haven’t noticed, 3D is going to be big in 2010. Not at Philips though, at least not yet. Instead of charging in to the market like Sony, Philips is willing to hedge its bets and wait on consumer demand. Consumers, of course, are waiting for content. And hey, maybe everybody’s wrong and quad-HD will be the next big thing to drive TV sales. Regardless, Philips wants everyone to know that its technology is ready when you are so its got a 3D prototype Blu-ray player and stunning 3D version of its 56-inch Cinema 21:9 TV here at IFA in Berlin. While the idea of watching movies in 3D sounds like a novelty, the idea of gaming in 3D is downright compelling — awkward passive polarized glasses be damned! Philips Aurea reaches 3rd generation, demands more allowance

September 3rd, 2009

Aww, just look at him, Philips’ Aurea TV’s all growed up and showing off the latest in LED edge-lighting. This third generation set features the same transparent Active Frame now sporting 250 LEDs with a promise of “exact” Ambilight color matching” with what you see on the screen. The result, according to Philips and our own experience with Ambilight over the years, is a more immersive viewing experience — or maybe the experience is just peculiar, we can never be too sure. The set still features the same, albeit tweaked, motion sensitive remote control and adds Net TV for quick access to content from YouTube, eBay, TomTom and more depending upon your location. As to the display, well, it’s still 42-inches by the looks of things, with a Full HD (1920×1080) resolution, 100Hz refresh, and snappy 2-ms response as before. The box itself feature an integrated DVB-T/DVB-C/CI+ HDTV receiver, 5x HDMI 1.3a EasyLink inputs, WiFi, Ethernet, and a DLNA-compliant network link for accessing media off your PC. Coming soon, that’s when. Sharp’s new AQUOS lineup eyes-on

July 8th, 2009

We just crashed Sharp’s AQUOS launch party and got a nice look at the new AQUOS panels , along with a bit of a peek at the LEDs behind the curtain. In a lot of senses, Sharp’s new panels are a collection of last generation technologies: the LEDs aren’t locally dimmed, the 120Hz refresh rate falls short of the 240Hz that’s been bandied about of late, and the internet services don’t offer video playback or WiFi connectivity. That said, the picture is looking pretty great. Sharp credits its specialized LEDs for increasing the color gamut, and new LCD tech for improved blacks and improved brightness due to better controls and less electronics getting in the way. As for 120Hz, Sharp says that its engineers found that 240Hz introduced noise, and on a personal note we don’t think we need many more Hz in our lives. There aren’t really any excuses for the shortage of internet services, but we should be seeing some new stuff at CES next year. Localized dimming is also due for the next generation, but Sharp sees the next big step for LCD tech being the RGB backlight available in its XS1 top-of-the-line set . In practice the blacks look great and the colors look great, but we’ll have to sit these new sets down next to competing TVs to really get a good idea of where Sharp’s at with this gen. Panasonic DMP-B15 hands-on

June 24th, 2009

Sponsors

While we got a quick look at the thing a few months ago, we were finally able to get our mitts all over Panasonic’s new DMP-B15 portable Blu-ray player . With its bigger-than-a-laptop size and wild pricetag (for a consumer device), it’s obviously a niche product, but that’s not to say there aren’t hints of consumer friendliness in here. Overall the hardware is light and strong, and while we felt a bit of heat venting out the sides, it’s not uncomfortable, and the disc operation is virtually silent. Startup time and disc load times are comparable to most dedicated home Blu-ray players — certainly not best in class, but passable — and we couldn’t get the player to skip despite our best efforts. The screen is really great, with a good amount of viewing angle and brightness for the category and plenty of resolution to differentiate HD content. We spotted a bit of pixel crunch in menus and stills, but once the motion started we could barely differentiate pixels. Sure, it’s hard to imagine a reason for most people to pick up a DMP-B15 over a cheapish Blu-ray playing laptop — the thing is monstrously thick, and can’t even handle a traditional laptop-style screen orientation, only everything but — but the hardware is reliable enough for kids to handle on the road, and the single-use makes it a good home Blu-ray player for plugging into that second HD-starved TV. Still, we’re guessing most will wait to see what next year’s (sure to be flush) crop has to offer. VIZIO Internet App HDTVs launch later this year, for less than you might expect

June 24th, 2009

Sponsors

Sure only just showed off new updates in its high end XVT series, but it’s already planning the next generation of LCDs with Internet Apps included. Packing widget functionality, 802.11n wireless networking and slider QWERTY Bluetooth remote , the SV422XVT, SV472XVT and VF552XVT Connected HDTVs are coming home in November, October and December, respectively. Already on deck to serve up content for your widgets are Vudu, Revision3, Facebook, Twitter, Rhapsody, Blockbuster OnDemand, Showtime, Flickr and more. The biggest surprise? There’s apparently no price premium planned for these features, with the 55-inch clocking in at the same $2,199 price as the model it’s replacing, though the 47-inch jumps $200 over the previous edition to $1,699, while adding the local dimming LED backlit technology previously reserved for the 55-inch. The 42-inch will be the first and cheapest available at $1,199 (sans LED) — we’ll see if that bar is low enough to get viewers to jump into the internet-connected display future. Samsung’s P410M pocket projector is just a little bit better

June 23rd, 2009

Samsung’s looking to update its original P400 pocket imager with the P410m. Other than pumping out 170 lumens off a 30,000 hour LED to the P400’s 151 lumens, the P410M looks like the same 800 x 600 pixel DLP beamer with 1,000:1 contrast first spotted at CES back in January 2008 . But hey, brighter is better especially in this milquetoast-class of ultra-portable projectors. Toshiba ships REGZA ZV650 and SV670 HDTVs

June 10th, 2009

If you’re not down with waiting for Toshiba’s internet-connected range of HDTVs — which, by the way, should be out before the dawn of 2010 — here’s a bit of excellent news: the REGZA ZV650 and SV670 series are now shipping. Both of the sets were initially announced way back at CES, and the latter of the two is Tosh’s first-ever LED-backlit . Said set also packs local dimming, ClearScan 240 dejudder technology, PixelPure 5G 14-bit video processing and that questionably useful Resolution+ system. There’s also a USB socket, four HDMI connectors, IR pass-through, a PC input and REGZA-LINK (HDMI-CEC). As for the other guys (yeah, there’s more), head on past the break and take notes on the ones relevant to your interests. Microvision’s PicoP-based SHOW WX pocket PJ makes debut

April 13th, 2009

While Microvision isn’t new (per se) to the pico projector arena entirely, it certainly lacks the namesake of, say, Dell or Optoma . Of course, it’s not letting that fact damper its excitement about the PicoP-based SHOW WX. The pre-production device is being unveiled today at Macworld, and it promises to boast a 25% package-size reduction over the company’s own SHOW prototype. The diminutive beamer will eventually arrive with a WVGA native resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio, a battery good for around two hours of usage and a chassis that measures just 4.6- x 2.4- x .6-inches. The outfit anticipates that commercial production will get going in Q2, with mass availability ready by 2H 2009; regrettably, pricing still remains a mystery. 3M’s MM200 micro projector seeks integration within cellphones, cameras

April 13th, 2009

The MPro110 has picked up some pretty positive vibes in the burgeoning market, but 3M is already looking well beyond that. At this year’s CES, the company is debuting the LCoS-based MM200, a micro projection engine that is destined to find its way into cellphones, handheld accessories and digital cameras of the future. Reportedly, the device can project a 50-inch image while only drawing a single watt of power, and best of all, it’ll be “available for consumer purchase in 2009.” Yeah, as in, this year. One more look is after the break. TI’s DLP Pico technology unveiled in new round of pico projectors

April 12th, 2009

At last year’s CES, Texas Instruments was simply demonstrating prototypes of its DLP Pico technology; this year, it’s officially showcasing the real deal. The aforesaid chipset is currently residing within the WowWee Cinemin line and Optoma’s PK-101, but here’s something you didn’t know. Evidently, the chip will also be a critical part of pico projectors from Samsung (the MBP200 with an SD card slot), BenQ (the GP1 with an integrated USB port; available in March for $599) and Toshiba (TDP-F10U Mobile LED Projector). Also of note, BUG Labs will presumably be introducing a module of its own dubbed BUGprojector, which will enable legible beaming of 480 x 320 images at just eight inches away along with stereo playback and a brightness of 9 lumens. Lastly, TI itself has announced that a DLP Pico Projector Kit which sports an HVGA resolution, a universal power supply and a few other integral components necessary for integrating it into consumer, industrial and medical products. Toshiba matches prices, ship dates to LED backlit REGZA LCDs in Japan

April 7th, 2009

Toshiba is back and ready to make good on some of the higher end HDTVs promised at CES , after showing off the energy efficient C8000 REGZA LCDs , it’s time for the 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio local dimming LED backlit ZX8000 (labeled SV670 in the U.S. ) series. These also pack the latest edition of Super Resolution+ upconverting, ClearScan 240Hz motion and fifth generation Pixel Pure image processing. We’ve heard those picture quality claims and seen the ( sometimes controversial ) results before, but a few features anyone can appreciate are InstaPort HDMI for lagless switching between inputs and AutoView calibration for room lighting conditions. Add-on hard disk drives are also available, and the ZX8000 models are expected in late June / early July for 46- and 55-inch models topping out around 600,000 ($5,944.) Willing to live without LED backlighting, 240Hz or other bullet points? The ZH8000, Z8000 and H8000 models are ready and waiting for appropriately lower prices. Samsung begins production on edge-lit LED-backlit HDTV panels

March 27th, 2009

Samsung ’s being a bit ambiguous with this one, but we won’t deny that we’re drooling pretty heavily over these new panels. Said outfit has just revealed that mass production has begun on the industry’s first “ultra-slim LCD panels suited for large size TVs,” and while we’re wondering what exactly it means by that, we can’t help but appreciate the attributes. We’re told that the unique edge-lit LED backlighting offers lighter weight and thinner designs compared to standard direct-lit LED LCDs, and moreover, a 55-inch Samsung HDTV with edge-lit LED backlighting “uses up to 40 percent less power than conventional LCD TVs.” The panels measure just 0.42-inches thick and are being produced in 40-, 46- and 55-inch sizes. We’re still waiting to hear back from Sammy on whether these are the same ones used in the energy-efficient LCD HDTVs announced at CES or new models altogether, but ’til then, you can feel free to start digging in the couches for spare pennies. Mitsubishi affirms that LaserVue HDTV production is back on

March 27th, 2009

Sponsors

After Mitsubishi suddenly and unexpectedly suspended production of its flagship LaserVue HDTV in early February, many took the liberty of believing that the end was nigh for this extremely high-end set (given the not-exactly-booming economy). We contacted Mitsubishi in order to follow up, and today we’ve received direct confirmation that the LaserVue is indeed “back in production.” In other words, the supply channels are all moving smoothly again, and whatever caused the issue to begin with truly was simply a snag and not a foreshadowing of the set’s death. Too bad this thing is still up near seven grand in many places — after seeing one in action, it’s hard to look at any other technology the same way.
