LG to unveil LEX8 3DTV at IFA featuring ‘Nano LED’ backlighting

August 30th, 2010

Now that LED backlighting has trickled down to nearly every lineup, it appears the big manufacturers will have to find new ways to differentiate their products, like LG’s upcoming LEX8 television. Set to debut at IFA in Berlin before going on sale in Germany and Korea next month (no word on the US), LG claims that thanks to a ‘thin film of miniscule dots positioned in front of a full array of LEDs’ its Nano Lighting technology — perhaps of the Nanosys variety it licensed earlier this year — makes for a clearer, smoother picture, with the slimmest and narrowest outline of any LED TV, ever , at just .88cm thick with a 1.25cm bezel. Of course LG’s NetCast widgets and Magic Motion remote are along for the ride as well, while we’ll have to wait until the show opens later this week to get our eyes on this beauty, check after the break for a few more pictures. VIZIO brings the LED party to 19- and 23-inch models

October 29th, 2009

Unless you’ve been under a rock for a hot minute, then you know that LED backlit HDTVs have been all the rage, though so far no one has brought those benefits to the smaller TVs. Well today VIZIO added a 19-inch and a 23-inch model to its LED lineup. Only the 23-inch is 1080p, but both have very thin profiles and the improved contrast and color you’d expect. The interesting twist is that both models will work as a picture frame, which someone (as in, literally one person in some random corner of the globe) might appreciate. The 19-inch model retails for $349, and the 23-inch will set you back another $50, but there’s no word on when you can expect these to show up on a store shelf near you. More pictures and the full release after the jump. Fully-functional iPhone 3GS costume is expensive, bulky, and better than your Halloween idea

October 26th, 2009

What could possibly convince you that strapping a 42-inch TV to your body is a great idea? We don’t know, but somewhere between concept and the $2,000 total expenditures — with “no regrets,” mind you — Reko Rivera and John Savio, with the help of John Matthews, outfitted themselves with the displays used to project images from their iPhone 3GS . Unfortunately, the large screens themselves aren’t touch screens, but we probably can’t be that picky. Their reward? First prizes at costume parties and minor internet celebrity, which we’re happy to oblige. Video after the break. Samsung’s 40-inch LCD is world’s thinnest at 3.9-mm, attracts magic pencils

October 26th, 2009

What measures 3.9-mm thin by 40 inches? If you answered the standard Korean product waif you’d be close. This time, however, we’re talking about Samsung’s LED backlit featuring a 120Hz refresh and 5,000:1 reported contrast. Yup, that makes it the world’s thinnest — easily besting cross-town rival LG’s 5.9-mm thick LCDs — even if you can’t buy it as a complete television package… yet. Video: Slim, wireless, LED-backlit Sony ZX5 LCDs prepped for November release

September 7th, 2009

Sony’s packed in a plethora of buzz-worthy tech into its ZX5 series of Bravia LCDs — thin panels, edge-mounted LED backlighting, 240-Hz Motion Flow, and wireless connection between the media receiver section and the glass. The new 46- and 52-inch versions have got the styling portion of the competition aced, but we’re still smarting over the move away from local-dimming Triluminos LEDs. As for the Motion Flow, we’ll have to wait and see for ourselves if 240-Hertz is going to be the magic number to win us over. But then again, we’re greedy like that; but there’s something drool-inspiring about a 52-inch that gets 1080p video wirelessly sent to its 16.6-mm thin frame. Somehow, we don’t think our response will be different when these beauties are released to Japan in November. Video after the break. Sony’s Blu-ray MegaChanger hits the streets next month with new ES standalone

July 24th, 2009

Sponsors

When we first got our hands-on the 400 disc MegaChanger pictured above we’d hoped it would be out a little earlier; but never the less the wait is almost over as Sony officially announced plans to release the BDP-CX7000ES in August, for the hard to swallow price of $1,900 — about $400 less than rumored . The good news is that it does just about everything we can think of, like handle any Disc, DVD or CD with ease, and of course works with the latest codecs delivered via bitstream or LPCM . Now if you just have to have a changer, but wish it was half the price, you can wait a few more months for the BDP-CX960 for $800. You will however have to be willing to forgo things like RS-232 and IR-in, as well as the ES badge. Also shipping in August with the ES MegaChanger is the BDP-S1000ES. This standalone player is at the top of line and for $700 you get just about every feature and spec has to offer, as well as built-in WiFi and a DLNA client. The full details of all three are in the release after the jump. VIZIO Internet App HDTVs launch later this year, for less than you might expect

June 24th, 2009

Sure VIZIO only just showed off new updates in its high end XVT series, but it’s already planning the next generation of LCDs with VIZIO Internet Apps included. Packing widget functionality, 802.11n wireless networking and slider QWERTY Bluetooth remote , the SV422XVT, SV472XVT and VF552XVT Connected HDTVs are coming in November, October and December, respectively. Already on deck to serve up content for your widgets are Vudu, Revision3, Facebook, Twitter, Rhapsody, Blockbuster OnDemand, Showtime, Flickr and more. The biggest surprise? There’s apparently no price premium planned for these features, with the 55-inch clocking in at the same $2,199 price as the model it’s replacing, though the 47-inch jumps $200 over the previous edition to $1,699, while adding the local dimming LED backlit technology previously reserved for the 55-inch. The 42-inch will be the first and cheapest available at $1,199 (sans LED) — we’ll see if that bar is low enough to get viewers to jump into the internet-connected display future. Hands-on with Yahoo Widgets on a Samsung 7000 series HDTV

May 22nd, 2009

There’s little doubt that Yahoo Widgets took the market by storm at CES, in fact by the end of the first day of the show, it was news if a manufacturer didn’t announce the feature. Initially we didn’t understand what all the fuss was about, but after spending some time with the Widgets , we started to see the light. Unfortunately something has changed in the past five months and now that we have it in our to play with, it just doesn’t seem the same. The one word we’d use to describe the difference is “laggy” — check out the video after the break to see for yourself. The demos at CES were down right snappy, but even in our hard wired tests connected to the internet via a 20Mbps FiOS connection, the widgets loaded so slow we’re not sure we’d actually even use ‘em. To make matters worse, because most people don’t have internet connections behind their , they’re going to need some sort of WiFi adapter to make this work. The Samsung 7000 series we tested has an optional USB dongle that sells for $80, but we couldn’t even get it to work despite the hour of our life we wasted on it. Samsung’s 46 and 55-inch B9000 HDTVs boast widgets, wireless external media box

April 22nd, 2009

With no picture to show for it, unfortunately (that’s the 8 series , pictured), Samsung’s gone ahead and announced the 46-inch and 55-inch B9000 HDTVs, which looks to be a follow-up to the A950 models from last year. According to flatpanelshd, the latest addition to the Touch of Color series include LED backlights with localized dimming, Medi@2.0 with YouTube / Yahoo! widgets, built-in USB port, DLNA functionality, built-in DVB-T and DVB-C tuners, and most interesting, a wireless connection to an external media box that’s reportedly similar to Sony’s ZX1 — no word on whether or not that means it’s using WHDI . As for the other details, including pricing and availability, you’re gonna have to keep waiting, we’re afraid. Samsung begins production on edge-lit LED-backlit HDTV panels

March 27th, 2009

Samsung ’s being a bit ambiguous with this one, but we won’t deny that we’re drooling pretty heavily over these new panels. Said outfit has just revealed that mass production has begun on the industry’s first “ultra-slim panels suited for large size TVs,” and while we’re wondering what exactly it means by that, we can’t help but appreciate the attributes. We’re told that the unique edge-lit LED backlighting offers lighter weight and thinner designs compared to standard direct-lit LED LCDs, and moreover, a 55-inch Samsung with edge-lit LED backlighting “uses up to 40 percent less power than conventional TVs.” The panels measure just 0.42-inches thick and are being produced in 40-, 46- and 55-inch sizes. We’re still waiting to hear back from Sammy on whether these are the same ones used in the energy-efficient HDTVs announced at CES or new models altogether, but ’til then, you can feel free to start digging in the couches for spare pennies. Mitsubishi affirms that LaserVue HDTV production is back on

March 27th, 2009

Sponsors

After Mitsubishi suddenly and unexpectedly suspended production of its flagship LaserVue in early February, many took the liberty of believing that the end was nigh for this extremely high-end set (given the not-exactly-booming economy). We contacted Mitsubishi in order to follow up, and today we’ve received direct confirmation that the LaserVue is indeed “back in production.” In other words, the supply channels are all moving smoothly again, and whatever caused the issue to begin with truly was simply a snag and not a foreshadowing of the set’s death. Too bad this thing is still up near seven grand in many places — after seeing one in action, it’s hard to look at any other technology the same way.
