Yet another CEDIA has come and gone, and while some of our greatest hopes for Media Center came true ( CableCard is no longer OEM onl y, Switched Digital Video support for the tuning adapter is coming) several more did not (Zune HD integration and any new CableCard announcements from ATI.) Peep the recap post on Engadget HD for the full rundown on what did and didn’t happen in Media Center news from Atlanta, and what Microsoft’s next plans for Windows Media Center could (& should) be. This just in from our team at Microsoft’s MCE event at CEDIA — the OEM requirement on CableCARDs has been officially lifted, freeing Joe Six Packs all over from having to buy whole systems. The photo above pretty much says it all — enthusiasts (hey, that’s us!) can add CableCARD tuners to their PC. Even though a DIY workaround has been around for a while, it’s nice not to have to break/bend the rules to get your shows recorded, isn’t it? We have good and bad news after visiting the Dish Network booth first thing in the morning. We’re happy to say that Dish was proudly displaying a Dish Tuner for Media Center 7 at its booth. The bad news however is that it was just a “proof of concept.” Which means no matter how hard we tried, no one would tell us anything about price or availability. The other thing up in the air was if the actual implementation would be based on VIP211K HD STBs like the demo, or if instead there would be a dedicated tuner. The last unknown was around VOD or PPV, which we know was recently being tested , but still no word if it’ll make the final version. The other bad, but not unexpected news, is the fact that like the first generation CableCARD tuner for Media Center, all the content is copy protected. As for how it works, looks good, but the channel changing was slower than our CableCARD tuner enabled Media Center. We did grab a video, but you’ll have to wait until we can get it uploaded. Today is officially the first day of CEDIA Expo 2009 and now that Microsoft has announced its Media Center news , it’s the partner’s turn. Up first is Nevius which is of course releasing new Media Center PCs with Windows 7 , so of course the new looser DRM and other features are included. Niveus is stepping up the hardware though too by adding RAID and SSD drives to the Pro Series, and also a new Windows Home Server requirement for its full system restoration capabilities. The other new offering is the aptly named White Glove service, which basically means the services to integrators is getting an upgrade. Prices are promised before the official launch on October 22nd, but based on the existing offering, we’d bet we still won’t be able to afford it. If you’ve ever thought about forcing your Xbox 360 to do double duty and in addition to all the games you require it to host for you, set it up to replace your TiVo or cable company DVR, then now might just be the time. The reason is simple, in Windows 7, Microsoft has really made some nice improvements to Windows Media Center. What improvements you might ask? Glad you did, because over at Engadget HD the team went over the changes with a fine-tooth comb . We’ll go ahead and hurt the feelings of those in Asia, North America and the Cook Islands: this here set is bound for the European market only (for now, anyway), but hey, at least we know the technology is here. Over in the UK, one Cello Electronics has issued the first HDTV that records OTA (Freeview) content directly to an SD card, giving users an easy option for shuffling recorded content to portable players. The set itself boasts twin TV tuners, a built-in EPG, split-screen functionality and an integrated DVD player; as for sizes, you’ll find it in 22-, 26- and 32-inch flavors. Sadly, you’ll be stuck with “just” 1,440 x 900 pixels and no HDMI socket, but those who couldn’t care less can take ownership starting next month for TBD, ?399.99 ($661) or ?469.99 ($777) in order of mention. Just as promised , the Windows alpha of Boxee media center software is now open to all, but that’s far from the only big announcement made, so hang tight for a second. MLB.tv has been added as a partner, allowing subscribers to catch games live and even in HD within the Boxee interface, as well as other new and upcoming integration with Digg, Tumblr and Current. Speaking of the interface, there’s a new look (pictured above) to separate internet and locally-hosted content more clearly, and among the more granular tweaks Jaunty Jackalope support is official and Ubuntu users can enjoy 1080p playback via NVIDIA hardware acceleration. Check the blog for all the details including one more that probably only we can appreciate, it’s now officially “Boxee” with a capital B, so the grammar police can set their weapons back to stun. Good news, Vista Media Center PC users will soon find a new option under the TV+Movies tile, as Netflix Watch Instantly streaming access is added directly to the interface. The soul crushingly bad news? A post on The Green Button informs that this does not apply to Media Center Extenders , so cheapskates hoping to get around the Xbox 360’s Gold Xbox Live subscription requirement are still going to need those plugins and workarounds . This should go over much better than the InternetTV beta 2 , but we’re disappointed Microsoft’s vision of TV on Your PC (as pointed out on its accompanying blogs, videos and assorted paraphernalia indicates) doesn’t allow users to stretch their PC back to the TV at will. ’til that changes, check the gallery and after the break to see what awaits in Media Center once the update rolls out over the next 48 hours. Update : We checked with Microsoft, and confirmed that, at least for now, this streaming only includes the same content as the browser experience - so no HD. As far as Windows 7 and / or RC1 support? No word yet.
