LG’s WiFi-enabled, DivX-friendly BD390 player has been shipping here in the States since May, but not until now have you really had a reason to pick one up. Here at CEDIA, VUDU is taking one step further away from its standalone movie set-top-box by announcing that the aforementioned deck will become the first of its kind to tap into VUDU’s growing library of on-demand film rentals. Of course, adding VUDU to this player was a natural move given the built-in Ethernet port, though users will have to wait until the end of this month to suck down the free update. In case you’re wondering, the VUDU interface on LG’s player will be the same as the one found on the company’s own hardware (not to mention a few LG HDTVs ), and the $399 price point will remain the same even after the new functionality is added. Mvix Ultio "It Plays All" HD media streamer debuts in the U.S. July 6 for $179

June 25th, 2009

We’d heard rumors Mvix USA would be rolling out an upgraded 1080p capable media box to rival the earlier MvixPVR and here it is. Dubbed the Ultio, it has a list of supported codecs and containers that rivals the new Popcorn Hour C-200 in its thoroughness — DivX(R) (3/4/5/6), Xvid, AVC-HD, MPEG 1/2/4, WMV-9, ASF(WMV9), MKV, DVD(IFO, VOB), ISO, MP3, WMA, AAC, OGG, FLAC, AC3 — it’s all here, with a slightly awkward Swiss Army knife-themed tagline to boot. The $169 price tag is sans-3.5-inch SATA HDD, though you can add one for $79 (500GB) $90 (1TB) or $139 (1.5TB). Of course network streaming is a part of the package, with Mvix’s usual suite of Samba / UPnP / BitTorrent (mentioning compatibility with PlayOn and Tversity specifically to get all your Netflix, YouTube and other streaming sources to TV) via Ethernet or optional Wireless-N dongle. It’s up for pre-orders now, take a close look at the specs and pics then get in line before they start shipping July 6. PopcornHour’s latest C200 media box is Blu-ray (& anything else) ready

June 16th, 2009

The followup to the popular PopcornHour media streamer series has finally been announced, and the list of features makes it look worth the wait. Revealed in a post on the Networked Media Tank forums the C200 contains an upgraded Sigma SMP8643 667 Mhz processor, HDMI 1.3 out, two SATA slots, a drive bay for mounting your own HDD, DVD or even drive (requires internal HDD or 1GB USB stick) and supports a list of networking standards, codecs and containers far too long to recount here. At first glance, only DivX jumps out as missing from the list, have a look at the forum posting and let us know if you spot. Of course, there’s already a video unboxing available, seen after the break (along with the copied list of specs) or check out the full Google translated early hands on impressions from HomeTheater.co.il. The most pressing questions of when will these be available and for how much, will have to be answered at another time. Linksys discontinues Media Center Extenders, hardly anyone notices

May 19th, 2009

Sponsors

Media Center Extenders — remember those ? Yeah, those things were all the rage at CEDIA 2008, and right around four hours after the show closed up, you and the whole world forgot about ‘em. Honestly, the concept and execution was flawed from the start. These standalone boxes provided exactly what media loving consumers didn’t want: yet another set-top-box crowding their space. Furthermore, most were priced at or above the cost of an Xbox 360, which — lo and behold — could be used as an MCE as well as a darn good gaming console. See the holes in this plan yet? Furthermore, most of ‘em, particularly those that relied on WiFi, were utterly unreliable and offered disappointing streams. High prices plus lackluster results yields low demand, who woulda thunk it? Essentially, manufacturers were hoping that those with loads of media on Windows-based PCs would jump at the chance to get all of that material on their with the addition of one little box. And in theory, at least, that does sound somewhat attractive. Unfortunately, only a few of these were announced in Denver, and almost all of them suffered from inexcusable delays . By the time they hit the market, all of the buzz generated at the trade show was extinguished, and early reviews were less than positive. It didn’t take long to see prices begin to plummet , all while fence sitting companies realized that avoiding this niche would likely be most beneficial to their longevity. Today, we’re seeing Linksys’ DMA2100 and DMA2200 listed as “Discontinued” at a number of legitimate e-tailers, and while D-Link’s DSM-750 and HP’s MediaSmart Connect seem to be hanging around at near-full price, we can’t say the same for Samsung’s discounted MediaLive Digital Media Adapter . Heck, Niveus Media doesn’t even list its Media Center Extender - EDGE as a product on its website anymore. It shouldn’t be any real shock that hardly any other companies have jumped in since these first few, and we’re having serious doubts about the future of the dedicated MCE. Are you getting the same vibes? Do you think these things could thrive at the right price? Let us know in the poll and comments below! [Via GeekTonic ] Update : Turns out HP is axing its MediaSmart / Connect lines as well. It’s full statement sent to us is after the break. Sewell’s WiFi-based HD Media Extender should be more affordable

April 9th, 2009

You know what’s most annoying about wireless HD solutions? Two things, really. First off, 95 percent of ‘em only come out to play at trade shows. Secondly, the other 5 percent require you to refinance your now-worthless to even procure ‘em. Sewell , a company known for delivering unexpected treasures when it comes to adapters, has just pumped out its very own wireless HDMI media extender. The good news is that it’s shipping right now and it relies on 802.11a/n technology rather than WHDI, UWB or any other less ubiquitous option. The bad news is that 15 to 30 feet of cord-free AV goodness will set you back $1,199.95. You can weigh the pros and cons yourself, but we’ll be begrudgingly sticking with coat hangers cheap-o interconnects ’til it becomes just a touch more of a bargain. Recession-busting $150 Blu-ray players coming this year

April 7th, 2009

Sponsors

If digital distribution is going to be held off for another year, players are going to need to achieve some serious market penetration at a rather difficult time. VIZIO’s $200 VBR100 should help when it releases in a few months, but could be quickly undercut by a predicted flood of $150 drives said to be inbound from a number of other industry players, including Lite-On . These “white-box” drives will probably be short on features, but so too were the cheap DVD players that killed off the VCR, and nobody thought twice about that. If all goes according to plan look for stacks of inexpensive drives to start appearing at whatever retailers are still in business later this year. LaCie intros 8x d2 Blu-ray burner, LaCinema Black MAX media streamer

April 7th, 2009

It was May of last year when LaCie last updated its external d2 burner, so it’s about time we saw that 4x burn rate double to an entirely more palatable 8x . Available now for consumers in the US, the latest d2 Drive ($449.99) can toast both single- and dual-layer BD-Rs at 8x, and it can connect to one’s machine via FireWire or USB 2.0. In related news, the outfit has also introduced a LaCinema Black MAX over in Europe, which acts to serve up all sorts of digital media (photos, video clips, music, etc.) on one’s . You can order it with 500GB / 1TB of inbuilt storage, and the integrated Ethernet jack / WiFi module enables it to pull media (up to 1080p) from other locations on your network. We’ve nary a clue on pricing / availability for this one, but we’ll leave it to those in Europe to hunt it down and brag to us Yanks. SmartQ introduces HDTV Player, lets it explain itself

April 6th, 2009

Generally speaking, SmartQ has stuck to what it’s best at — mediocre portable media players — without deviating an inch. Finally, someone at the company conjured up enough courage to take a risk, and we think the outcome is pretty decent. The simply titled and not-at-all-confusing Player is the firm’s very first set-top-box , which aims to play back a litany of high-definition files on one’s . As predicted, the box offers up an HDMI 1.3 port for getting all that lovely 720p+ content onto your screen, and there’s also a pair of USB 2.0 ports for connecting external HDDs and the like. Beyond that, details are astonishingly sparse, but we get the feeling it’ll be quite some time (read: forever) before this thing floats far from the shores of Asia.
