Netflix bends over, agrees to delay renting Warner DVDs

January 13th, 2010

Oh sigh. We’d been hearing that Brothers would be pushing for month-long rental delays for mail-order services in order to boost sales, and it looks like Netflix has been pushed into submission: under an agreement announced today, Brother DVDs and Blu-rays won’t be available to Netflix subscribers for 28 days after they’re released for sale. What’s worse, Netflix says it expects to reach similar deals with the other major studios as time goes on. Why would Reed Hastings agree to a clear imposition on his company’s rights under the first-sale doctrine? We’re guessing this is the only way the studios would open up and allow more movies to hit Watch Instantly — and the AP says Netflix is also getting a discount on the actual discs. Yeah, it’s lame, but honestly we’d rather take more streaming content over new releases in the mail straight away, so let’s hope all this wheeling and dealing pays off. January 11th, 2010

And you thought that just because you are the home theater in a box type that you wouldn’t get to enjoy 3D — Sony announced a trio of Blu-ray home theater systems that feature wireless speakers and the same internet streaming features BRAVIA Internet Video, DNLA and the iPhone app remote that the stand-alone Blu-ray from Sony do. And the top of the line BDV-HZ970W (pictured above) also supports 3D Blu-ray Discs. The other two new systems, the BDV-E770W and BDV-E570, have most of the same features, but both lack 3D and the BDV-E570 doesn’t do DLNA. Check out the full release after the break if you are still left asking for more. New Sony Blu-ray players do 3D, WiFi, iPhone remote, more

January 11th, 2010

Since releasing the initial Blu-ray players on the market years ago, Sony has been lagging a little behind in regards to features. Today that’s about to change as the top of the line BDP-S770 (pictured above) not only supports 3D, but also has built in WiFi, and iPhone/iPod Touch app for a remote (in addition to the standard remote) and plenty of streaming options like Netflix , Amazon and many others. The BDP-S570 also has built in WiFi, but unlike the 770, it will require a firmware update before DLNA works. The BDP-S370 brings the line home which is similar to its bigger brothers but requires an optional WiFi adapter if you need wireless. Netflix, Best Buy deal brings Watch Instantly streaming to even cheaper Blu-ray players

October 21st, 2009

Though they’ve been floating around retail channels for a few weeks, Best Buy and Netflix have finally made official a partnership bringing streaming to the latest Insignia Blu-ray players. The NS-BRDVD3 runs $179, while the NS-WBRDVD edition tosses in WiFi for $20 more, while they won’t stream out of the box, a firmware update just made available should add all that Watch Instantly goodness. These two keep the (we’ll be nice and call it plain) styling of earlier models, and likely live up to the family reputation of “basic Blu-ray playback at a bargain” reported on the second generation of players . Of course, the BD-P1600 offers more features and a nicer reputation at about the same price, but Reward Zone members may want to think twice, with AVS Forum posters mentioning the NS-BRDVD3 can be had for just $99.99 through the 24th. Decisions, decisions. Netflix CEO dreams of iPhone, TV, and game console ubiquity

September 22nd, 2009

When a CEO is asked to dream we shouldn’t be surprised when he dreams big. In an Reuters interview with Netflix CEO, Reed Hastings, we learn that Netflix is working in parallel to bring its services to “all the game consoles, all the Blu-ray players, all the Internet TVs.” Naturally, he added that the Xbox deal is exclusive for the time being. The company is currently focused on the big screen but “will get to mobile eventually, including the iPhone.” And while the streaming business is “booming,” he says the DVD business is still growing as well, likely peaking in “5 years or so” with people still doing DVD-by-mail over the next 20 years. Reed then adjusted his monocle and disappeared in a flash of cigar and brick-and-mortar ash . Sony’s new BDP-N460 Blu-ray player adds access to internet content

September 10th, 2009

What you’re looking at here is the latest addition to the Sony Blu-ray family. The BDP-N460 seemingly fits right in between the BDP-S360 and the BDP-S560 with an MSRP of $249. What sets it apart from its little brother is the fact that it can use its included network jack for more than just BD-Live and it features a USB port on the front, in addition to the one on the back for optional BD-Live storage. There’s no built in WiFi or MKV support like other brands though, but it is shipping with access to YouTube and to Bravia Internet Video, and in addition Sony promises Netflix Watch Instantly later this fall. No word on whether this means the end for the BDP-S360, but considering the price and improved features of the 460, that’s where we’d put our money. July 22nd, 2009

Samsung’s latest Blu-ray HTIB features just about anything an all-in-one customer could want; in fact we’re not sure how you can even build a 5.1 system with rear wireless speakers and a Blu-ray player for $799. The HT-BD3252 of course supports the latest HD audio codecs like TrueHD and DTS-HD , and a mic for automatic calibration. Not wanting to leave anything out from its stand-alone players, Samsung has also included the same internet services like Pandora , Netflix and Blockbuster via the included WiFi dongle. Oh, and don’t forget the very important iPod dock, we mean, who would buy a HTIB in this day and age without one? Not us, that’s for sure. Look out, world — a relative no-name has just showed up with a new ultraportable , and it’s darn tough to not pay attention with a specs sheet like this. The Maingear mX-L arrives with a 13.3-inch LED-backlit display (1,280 x 800), a Core 2 Duo CPU, GMA X4500HD graphics, 8GB of DDR2 RAM, 160GB Intel X25-M SSD (or a 500GB HDD for those without the cheddar), a dual-layer Blu-ray reader, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, gigabit Ethernet, WiFi, VGA output, three USB 2.0 sockets and a custom etched top that’s totally take-it-or-leave-it. The unit weighs in at 4.4 pounds and gets going at $1,099.99, but don’t expect that measly four-cell Li-ion to last you through a whole transcontinental flight. Netflix raising rates for Blu-ray subscribers by around 20 percent

March 30th, 2009

Ruh roh. In a move that will undoubtedly cause an incredibly raucous stir, only to fade away as movie renters realize that Netflix is still the best deal going, America’s most adored by-mail rental service is hiking the price of Blu-ray rentals once again. If you’ll recall , Netflix already implemented a $1 per month fee for Blu-ray customers back in October , and now it’s looking to push that premium higher by around 20 percent across its pricing tiers. The company asserts that the increase (slated to hit April 27th and only applicable to BD customers) is due to it buying more titles on BD to “accommodate the increasing number of Netflix members who prefer renting movies on Blu-ray.” In fact, nearly 10 percent of all Netflix customers are choosing BD now, and obviously these platters cost quite a bit more for anyone (even Netflix) to procure. Head past the break to see how big of a hardship this will be on you.
