We’ve had only tantalizingly brief (or is it briefly tantalizing?) chances to see LG’s glorious OLED television , but each and every time it’s left us with the feeling that our lives are poorer for not having one in our homes. Sure, that says as much about our tech addiction as it does about the 3mm-thick displays, but at least the deep-pocketed among us won’t have to wait too much longer to sate the need for 10,000,000:1 contrast ratios and 0.001ms response times. LG has announced it’ll be bringing it’s 15-inch OLED panel to Europe this May (to be swiftly followed by summer availability in the US) with a hefty MSRP sticker of €1,999 ($2,725) for the Austrian market. Nobody ever said the cutting edge was gonna be a cheap place to live. Speaking at the FPD show in Japan, Won Kim, VP of LG Display’s OLED sales and marketing group laid bare its OLED plans for the future. Pretty significant as LG is one of only two players currently manufacturing production OLED TVs ; though unlike Sony , LG has yet to ship anything — that bit of consumer magic begins in November . So here’s the deal: LG will release 20-inch and larger OLED panels in 2010, 30-inch and larger in 2011, and 40-inch and larger OLED panels in 2012. While 40-inch OLEDs will still be “fairly expensive” in 2012, Kim predicts that “OLED panels will cost less than LCD panels in 2016.” We’d love to believe that but it sounds overly aggressive to us considering the enormous investment panel manufacturers have made in LCDs (they’ll be milking profits just as long as they can) and new push towards 3D televisions. Besides, LG’s been all over the map with its OLED dates so let’s not go carving anything in low-temperature polycrystal silicon just yet. LG bared the fruits of its OLED labor last week with a new set of photos of its gorgeous 15-inch screen, and now comes word from Reuters that it’s gearing up to become consumer reality. The company will be showing off the model at next week’s IFA trade show, and then expects to start selling it in Korea this November, followed by overseas sometime next year. Excited? You bet. Affordable? Price unknown, with Sony’s two-year old 11-inch XEL-1 still retailing for $2,500 in the US — and worse elsewhere — you can expect to be sacrificing a pretty penny for small-screen bliss. LG also plans to show off a 40-inch OLED in the “not too distant future,” but don’t expect to be seeing that hit retail shelves for a good long time to come. Whooo. (Not Wooo .) Amazing how a few well framed PR shots can reignite gadget lust, just when it seems extinguished. Sure, LG’s 15-inch OLED HDTV will probably follow the path of Sony’s $2,500 11-inch XEL-1 to the land of ridiculously overpriced trinkets that few can or will purchase and eventually falls by the wayside when larger, cheaper options become available. Still, checking out that ultra bright screen in these photos has us checking our bank account for an extra few grand, refreshing the feeling last experienced when we checked it out in person at CES . The appearance of these on LG’s Flickr stream would appear to support the summer mass production-December launch we’ve been promised , who else is wishing the 30-inch version wasn’t delayed until 2012 ? Hope you weren’t too attached to the idea of “medium to large” sized OLED HDTVs coming from Sony this year, according to the Wall Street Journal’s sources , the company’s slipping share of TV sales mean profitability takes precedence over sweet, super slim new displays. Surprised by its inability to sell truckloads of $2,500 11-inch versions CEO Howard Stringer decided to put the project on the back burner, apparently more focused on things like competing in Wal-Mart and implementing cheaper LED technology for its LCDs . With LG also on a timetable that puts us a year or more away from seeing one of these on store shelves in decent sizes, things are up to Samsung to bring it home — we’re waiting. We know it’s been burning on your mind everyday since December 6th, 2007: “What on Earth are those guys and gals over at Seiko Epson doing now that they’ve killed production of RPTVs ?” At long last, we’ve located an answer. According to a prideful new release from the outfit, it has developed a new inkjet technology that will enable the “uniform deposition of organic material in the production of large-screen OLED TVs.” For what seems like years now, manufacturers have teased us with 37-inch OLED HDTVs , but they’ve skirted around questions relating to “price” and “release.” Now, the last remaining excuse seems to have been vaporized, so if we don’t see a market-ready big-screen OLED at CES 2010… well, let’s just say the knee-capping club is dying for a reason to reunite. Ready with the proper retort to all those rumors , false starts and misquotations , the Nikkei is reporting that Panasonic and Sumitomo are zeroed in and have the tunnel vision to deliver the 40-inch plus OLED HDTVs we’ve been waiting for within fiscal 2010. Once organic electroluminescent product is flooding the streets, the plan is apparently to cut the power requirements of the bright, slim displays to less than a third of current LCDs by 2015, right around the time Samsung thinks this tech will be ready for the mainstream , anyone else care to make a prediction? Given just how long we’ve been looking at prototype OLED panels at trade shows (and trade shows alone), we’re understandably skeptical about a few new claims regarding availability. For whatever it’s worth, MegaWhat.tv has reported that the display will actually be on store shelves in 2010 (yeah, that’s next year), bringing with it a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, DVI / HDMI inputs and a total depth of just 1.6 centimeters. Furthermore, it’s said to suck down 40 percent less energy compared to an equivalent LCD, but you can rest assured that you’ll pay for that luxury up front. In related news, Smarthouse is suggesting that senior Panasonic executives have said that it is currently “researching” HD OLED TV and should have one on the market within two years. Not to be a Debbie Downer or anything, but we’ll wait until we see progress at CES 2010 before getting too hopeful. We’ve been waiting for what seems like ages for the next iteration of the XEL-1 to dash in and swoop us off of our feet, but frankly, we’re growing anxious. As the world waits for a commercial-ready OLED TV that’s larger than a standard sheet of paper, industry insiders down at the IFA briefings in Malta this past week believe that Sony could be gearing up to make all sorts of hopes and dreams come true this September. Jens Heithecker, executive director of Messe Berlin, which organizes the IFA trade fair, noted that “IFA is a trade show which is focused more on market-ready technologies,” hinting that anything we see in just a few short months will be prepared for release into the wild. We’re also told that more “ultra-widescreen” 21:9 sets — like Philips’ masterpiece — could be on display, not to mention scores of internet-ready HDTVs and a Samsung set with refresh rates of 400Hz. Needless to say, IFA’s shaping up to be quite a show for the television sector, so you may want to think twice (or thrice, if necessary) about snagging a new panel on August 31st. Details are still sparse, but Wired has it that LG Electronics has just inked a deal with OLED mainstay Kodak in order to use the latter’s technology in all sorts of future devices. For those unaware, Kodak’s actually been dabbling in OLED for ages now, though it rarely offers up dedicated products in order to take credit. Reportedly, LG could bake Kodak’s OLED magic into devices such as mobile phones, televisions and digital photo frames, though we suspect LG has a few other out-of-the-box widgets planned as well. As much as we love the idea of an OLED watch phone , what we’re really clamoring for is a big screen Scarlet with an OLED panel. Let’s make it happen, alright folks?
