NVIDIA shows its 3D Blu-ray readiness in run-up to CES, Acer demos 120Hz LCD

December 9th, 2009

We recently got a chance to check out NVIDIA’s 3D Blu-ray ecosystem, and while we’re sure we’ll be all 3D Blu-ray’d out by the time CES is over, it was our first chance to see the new tech in action, and it seems pretty raring to go. Specifically we got to check out a movie film (we can’t say which for legal reasons) on a fancy new upcoming Acer LCD (the 24-inch G245, pictured above) that does 120Hz and can be synced with NVIDIA’s 3D shutter-based glasses. The 3D looked just fine, on par with other movies we’ve seen from NVIDIA in the past , and close to what we’ve seen in theaters, with the exception being that this is being delivered on a backwards-compatible, consumer-friendly Blu-ray disc. 3D Blu-ray is encoded in a new MVC-AVC format, which passes through a regular 1080p video for incompatible hardware, but provides a 3D image for the software and decode hardware capable of sussing it out. Right now NVIDIA’s 3D Blu-ray capable on existing GeForce GT 220 and GT 240 GPUs, along with its upcoming Fermi cards due next year. Software is even more plentiful, with Arcsoft, Core, Cyberlink and Sonic all promising to by ready for 3D Blu-ray titles when they start shipping next year. Once the 3D Blu-ray spec is formally announced we’re sure the floodgate will open even wider, but for now it seems NVIDIA has a nice jump on the tech, and we’re sure they wouldn’t mind pocketing a few of your gaming dollars in the meantime. ASRock ION 330HT-BD nettop goes on sale for $589

December 9th, 2009

If you’re scouting a nettop that’ll hit your doorstep prior to those Christmas bells ringing, you’ll want to look elsewhere. That said, those with plenty of time to spare may want to consider ASRock’s ION 330HT-BD , particularly if you just can’t seem to stop renting Blu-ray Discs from Netflix. The box has just landed on Amazon with a $588.99 price tag and an admittedly frightening “usually ships within 1 to 4 months” warning, and if you’re no fan of BD (liar!), the standard 330HT is in the same boat for $458.99. November 9th, 2009

Call Daegu home? Just over in South Korea to visit and / or infiltrate the DMZ? Regardless of why you’re there, you’re probably interested in picking up LG’s latest, which has been tempting our retinas since IFA . Just as we’d heard back in late August, the aforesaid firm’s 15-inch OLED TV is reportedly now on sale in South Korea, and it’s packing a price tag of around ?3 million ($2,598). By our count, this is just the second major, mass-produced OLED TV to hit store shelves anywhere in the world, but we’re hoping to see a lot more action in this space come CES. You TV makers are listening to our requests demands, right? Toshiba’s BDX2000 Blu-ray deck hits Best Buy for $199, sour grapes also on sale

October 27th, 2009

Man, poor Toshiba. The company’s already sucked up its pride and started putting Blu-ray drives in its laptops , but here’s its first stab at a proper standalone player, the BDX2000 , on Best Buy shelves a bit early for $199 — or $50 less than its announced price. Sure, that makes sense given the falling prices of Blu-ray decks as the holidays approach, but even at that price it’s not super competitive with the slew of other decks out there that can do Netflix streaming. We’ll see if Tosh’s next efforts are a little more interesting than this , or if this is just more heartbreak than its worth. [Thanks, Alex] Continue reading Toshiba’s BDX2000 Blu-ray deck hits Best Buy for $199, sour grapes also on sale Filed under: Home Entertainment Toshiba’s BDX2000 Blu-ray deck hits Best Buy for $199, sour grapes also on sale originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 26 Oct 2009 20:22:00 EST. Optoma’s PK102 pico projector slims down, boosts connectivity

September 12th, 2009

One thing’s for sure: the obsession with pico projectors has certainly calmed since these things first hit the scene right around a year ago. Optoma’s PK101 was somewhat of an industry poster child, so it makes sense to see the company outing a successor in hopes of catching the interest of those who held off on adopting early . Still, the predictably titled PK102 does little to improve upon the past, boasting the same native resolution (480 x 320), a 2,000:1 contrast ratio (up from 1,000:1) and the traditional DLP engine . On the plus side, it has managed to trim down ever-so-slightly, step up to 4GB of internal memory and add a few new connectivity options including a composite video input and a universal port capable of receiving VGA and component video signals. Best of all, the PK102 is available now for just $229, which pales in comparison to the $430 or so it took to snag the PK101 on launch day. BenQ’s $499 Joybee GP1 pocket projector up for pre-order

May 24th, 2009

We had the pleasure of checking out BenQ’s Joybee GP1 pocket projector back in March at CeBIT , and now the bantam beamer is just about ready to ship here in the States. Starting now (like, right now ), interested consumers can plop down $499 in order to secure a place in line, ensuring that you’ll be one of the first on the block to take possession of the planet’s first LED-based PJ with a USB reader. Specs wise, you’ll find a DLP projection system kicking out an 858 x 600 resolution, 100 ANSI lumens, a 2,000:1 contrast ratio, a built-in 2-watt speaker and VGA / component / composite inputs. Five bills sounds a little steep for what it is, but hey, it’s a 1.4 pound projector — did you really expect it to be economical? Philips announces US availability for 2009 home entertainment line (with hands-on!)

May 7th, 2009

Philips may be dodging the North American sector with its flashiest of products , but it’s still showing the Yanks in attendance a little love on the home entertainment front. Today in a meeting in NYC, the outfit revealed US pricing and availability for its entire 2009 family, most of which was quietly introduced in January. Starting things off are the 6000 and 7000 Series of HDTVs, which just so happen to pick right up where the previous models left off in 2008. The 6000 Series will arrive in 32-, 42- and 47-inch flavors for $799, $1,399 and $1,699, respectively, while the 7000 Series goes 42-, 47- and 52-inch for $1,499, $1,799 and $2,299, also respectively. While checking these very sets out, we noticed that the factory settings left the colors a bit blown out and overly sharp — though, this practice is far too common in HDTV companies anyway. Nothing like wowing those Best Buy shoppers at first, only to sear their retinas at home, right? All kidding aside, the panels looked superb, and the A-B comparison mode made tweaking the settings a breeze. Hop on past the break for the rest of the details, and give our gallery a glance for a closer look at the whole lot. Sharp’s 32- / 37-inch Blu-ray AQUOS LCD HDTVs up for pre-order

April 6th, 2009

Right on cue, Sharp has offered two of its new Blu-ray-equipped AQUOS HDTVs up for pre-order. The 32-inch LC-32BD60U and 37-inch LC-37BD60U both feature 1080p panels, a trio of HDMI inputs, six millisecond response times and a slot-loading Blu-ray player on the side. Best of all, the 32-incher is coming up a dollar under a grand, while the 37-inch sibling will only run you $1,199. Sure, they’re a bit pricey compared to optical drive-less alternatives, but if you’ve been holding off on simultaneously scratching the BD + new TV itch, here’s your sign. Video: Syndiant demonstrates its own prototype pico projector

March 29th, 2009

At this point, the world needs another pico projector like it needs another glacier to suddenly and spontaneously melt, but we suppose the competition ain’t bad for those actually in the market for one. A relative unknown to the pocket PJ market, Syndiant has emerged from out of nowhere to showcase its very own engineering prototype. It’s so beta that it doesn’t even boast a codename, but you can hit play above to check out what it’s got going on. Maybe we’re just jaded, but we’d love for the quantity of these to slow and the native resolutions to grow — please, tell us we aren’t alone.
