Panasonic announces new 3D Blu-ray recorders, players

February 9th, 2010

Looks like Panasonic’s push to lead the 3D pack continues unabated. It’s been just over a week since the company announced the opening of its first Blu-ray 3D authoring facility and now word’s coming out of Tokyo’s Yurakucho District that the world will soon be getting not one but four devices, including the DMP-BDT900-K, a pretty straight forward player that features the latest Advanced AVC encoding engine and a generous helping of ports (including two USB, Ethernet, two HDMI outs, one component out, and an SDXC compatible memory card port). If playback alone doesn’t float your boat (and we don’t blame you), three of the new models include 3D Blu-ray recorders, including the DMR-BWT3000 (2TB), DMR-BWT2000 (1TB), and DMR-BWT1000 (750GB). All the aforementioned recorders sport 2Digital BS / 110?CS TV tuner, 1 Analog TV tuner, i.Link, SDXC memory card slot, Ethernet, VIERA Link, VOD Services, and BD-Live. Both the 2TB and 1TB models come with a pair of HDMI ports, while 750GB model owners will have to make due with one. All three are pegged to burn BD-RE discs at 1x, BD-R at 6x, and BD-R LTH, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, and DVD-R DL formats. Akihabara is reporting a street date of April 23rd, 2010. Panasonic demos Skype on VieraCast at CES (video)

January 8th, 2010

We’ve just dropped by Panasonic ’s CES booth to watch several actors spokespersons showcasing Skype on a couple of VIERA Cast -enabled HDTVs, which will be available in March. Unlike what Skype previously told us, the webcams involved were only capturing average-quality VGA video at 22fps instead of 720p, and they’ll cost you a hefty $200 each if you happen to be a lucky owner of a VIERA Cast TV. Let’s hope those four built-in mics (to increase gain for the distant couch) are worth it. Video after the break. Panasonic’s other 2010 Blu-ray players keep making 2D look & sound better

January 7th, 2010

Not planning to make the jump to 3D this year? Panasonic is still working on hardware for you too. Continued revisions of the UniPhier processor and PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus hardware at their core to improve picture quality, reduce size & power consumption, and lower the bootup time from off to playing to just 14 seconds. The DMP-BD45 foregoes any VieraCast beyond BD-Live hookups, while the BD65 and BD85 (above) add access to streaming services, expanded audio codec processing, and in the case of the BD85, additional hardware tweaks to keep audiophiles happy. Check the PR after the break for every detail except price and shipping dates — we won’t call you Luddites for living in a 3D-less world, just think (& Twitter) it. Panasonic packs a punch with portable Blu-ray player at CES (hands-on)

January 7th, 2010

Sponsors

Panasonic was showing off its new lineup of cameras and camcorders at its display table at Digital Experience, but that wasn’t what really caught our eyes. Nope, that honor went to the DMP-B500, a portable Blu-ray player that had both a killer screen and a (fairly) slim profile. Better yet, it doubles as a standalone Blu-ray player when you connect it to your TV, and it links up nicely with other VIERA products. Also on display was a WiFi photo frame with a built in CD player and a hidden iPod dock. Calendar and photo widgets looked nice on the crisp display, and let’s just put it this way, we don’t know how much we’d mind waking up to that in the morning. You don’t have to take our word for it though, check our the goods in our hands-on gallery. New standard could pave way for higher capacity Blu-ray discs

January 3rd, 2010

Already feeling the pinch of a mere 25GB per layer on a Blu-ray disc? Neither are we, but it looks like Sony and Panasonic have been busily working on ways to boost capacity nonetheless, and they’ve now devised a new method that seems to be on the fast track to becoming a standard. The best news is that it doesn’t involve a change in Blu-ray optics, but rather something called the Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation evaluation index (or i-MLSE — the “i’ is just for kicks, it seems), which is a new means of estimating the read error rate of discs on the fly that has apparently be made possible thanks to “recent hardware advancements.” According to Sony and Panasonic, that should now allow discs to hold up to 33.4 GB per layer, but it’s not exactly clear what that means for existing Blu-ray players (a little firmware assistance seems to at least be a conceivable option, though). There’s also no timeline for a rollout just yet, but Sony is reportedly now set to propose widespread adoption of i-MLSE to the Blu-ray Disc Association, of which it just so happens to be the leading member. Panasonic’s 1-inch thick Z1 plasma reviewed: playing with perfection

October 22nd, 2009

The plasma may be a dying breed, but the ones that are left are undoubtedly some of the best the world has ever seen. Take Panasonic ’s 54-inch TC-P54Z1 for example, which wowed audiences (us included) when it was first unveiled way back at CES. The HD Guru recently had an opportunity to take this very screen into his abode for review, and after a labor-intensive (around “one hour”) setup process, the gazing was officially on. Panny’s engineers were able to slim the set down to an inch by requiring that a dedicated (wireless) set-top-box be used for tuning OTA channels and managing connections, and the result was nothing less than elegant. If you’re wondering what north of five large really buys in an HDTV these days, wonder no more — the set was deemed darn near perfect, with “outstanding” color, contrast and deep black levels. Potentially best of all, there were no motion artifacts to speak of, and anyone with a 120Hz / 240Hz set can testify to just how annoying those things are. Hit the read link for a detailed unboxing, setup and review, but don’t even bother if you’re looking for someone to talk you out of what you’re about to do. Eyes-on Panasonic’s Full HD 3D plasma and Blu-ray combo

September 3rd, 2009

Sponsors

We just got a real eyeful of 3D, courtesy of Panasonic’s upcoming 1080p plasma and Blu-ray 3D setup. The system uses synced shutters, and was easily some of the best “consumer” 3D we’ve seen — almost on par with a theater experience, other than the fact that the screen was a whole lot smaller, at 103-inches. Unfortunately, while Panasonic is heavily touting 3D at IFA this year, just as Sony did at its own presser, there isn’t much hard news to show for it. The plasma and Blu-ray combo was actually announced a full year ago , and the only word we have on release at the moment is “next year.” Obviously, readily available 3D content plays a big part in this, and we get the impression that Avatar is syncing up nicely to be available on some sort of 3D home video format by the time it’s ready for a disc release — we’ve certainly seen enough teaser clips and trailers of it by now, anyway. To be honest, the 3D setup was seamless enough in our demo room that sometimes it hardly felt 3D. Avatar was especially “shallow” on the 3D scale (no pictures were allowed of the presentation, not that they would help), and we’ve yet to see anything mindblowing on that end. If anything, Panasonic’s presentation was more an opportunity to be “blown away” by the company’s awesome PowerPoint skills, if anything, so feel free to follow along in the gallery below. Panasonic issues mildly revamped PT-AE4000 1080p projector at IFA

September 3rd, 2009

Panasonic’s PT-AE3000 has gone over quite well in the home theater space, with its 1080p resolution and gorgeous image quality winning over more than a few projector junkies. But given that there’s always room for improvement, the outfit has today introduced the PT-AE4000, an ever-so-slightly refreshed version that looks essentially identical to its predecessor. The Full HD native resolution and 1,600 ANSI lumens remain unchanged, though the contrast ratio has been bumped from 60,000:1 to 80,000:1 and Panny has outfitted it with a new “red rich lamp” and dynamic iris. Finally, this beamer supposedly eliminates those nasty Cinemascope issues that some users were seeing on the AE3000, though the estimated ?2,000 ($3,255) asking price still feels a bit steep when you consider the alternatives . Don’t think you can sell the kids short anymore, keeping the Blu-ray copy at home and taking DVD rips on the road, now that Panasonic is ready to deliver its in-dash Blu-ray player and 7-inch HD screen packing nav unit in September. We got a good peek at these back in April and the specs haven’t changed, with the Profile 1.1 Bonus View compatible CY-BB1000D taking care of Blu-ray duties and featuring the same UniPhier guts as the company’s line of living room Blu-ray players. The CN-HX3000D is a WXGA 1280×720p 7-inch LED backlit widescreen display ready to play back media via standard HDMI, iPod connector, SD card or its digital TV tuner, powered by Windows Automotive with navigation duties assisted by Google Maps and Yahoo! Japan. The CY-BB1000D is ?99,750 ($1,057) and the CN-HX3000D is ?365,400 ($3,872), and both arrive September 10 in Japan. We’ll let you decide if around 5 grand is a good price for the in car HD experience (might want to look at custom mounting a DMP-B15 , $800 and you can take it with you.) It’ll definitely run you less here in America than it would if you chose to import straight from Japan , but the planet’s first BD-Live-capable portable Blu-ray player still ain’t cheap. Plasma market getting smaller and higher-end, but it’s still alive

May 13th, 2009

Sponsors

Pioneer’s decision to axe the Kuro earlier this year set off a wave of gloomy predictions about the future of plasma, but we’ve never really bought into it — and it sounds like the product planners at LG, Samsung, and Panasonic haven’t either. HD Guru asked reps from each company for their thoughts on the state of the plasma market, and the responses were pretty similar across the board: plasma remains the connoisseur’s choice overall, and it still makes up just about half of 50-inch and bigger sales. Of course, that means that plasma’s niche is shrinking and moving higher-end while LCDs more or less take over the rest of HDTV market, but until something like OLED develops into a true competitor we think plasma’s around for a while. Check out the full company responses at the read link. Heavily-backed WiGig Alliance to stream everything over 60GHz

May 10th, 2009

Yes folks, we’re back to the drawing board . Again. With a litany of wireless technologies floundering about and struggling to find real traction in the market, a cadre of market powerhouses have joined up to take wireless streaming to the next level — or so they say, anyway. The newly formed WiGig Alliance aims to use unlicensed 60GHz waves in order to stream just about anything you can think of: HD video, images, phone contacts, instant messages, audio, etc. This “unified” approach differs from most other alternatives, which generally pick one niche ( 1080p video , for instance) and stick to it. If the more than 15 technology firms have their collective druthers, the WiGig specification will find its way into everything from set-top-boxes to telephones to home stereos, ready and willing to stream to other WiGig-enabled devices at a moment’s notice. The group consists of household names such as Microsoft, LG, Dell, Samsung, Marvell, Nokia, NEC, Intel and Broadcom (just to name a few), and when we spoke to executives about the announcement, they told us that plans were to have the specification available to member organizations in Q4 of this year. The sad part is that this likely means we won’t see shipping products with the WiGig logo for another year after that — if we’re lucky. We can’t argue that some stability would be nice in this volatile sector; after all, we’ve been waiting for promising products like Belkin’s FlyWire to ship for well over a year. The execs we spoke with couldn’t speak on behalf of the partner firms in terms of what WiGig products were looming on the horizon, but as we alluded to earlier, the playing field is wide open. Honestly, we’d love for this to take off and finally give high-bandwidth wireless applications the support it needs to flourish, but as we’ve seen over the past few years, the road ahead ain’t an easy one to walk. The full release is after the break. Panasonic slashes price of 103-inch plasma

May 8th, 2009

Sponsors

Finding itself in the odd position of selling a suddenly low-end 103-inch 1080p plasma, Panasonic has responded by cutting the price of the professional model TH-103PF10UK by $20,000 to a mere $50,000. Despite waiting over two years to move to a much more reasonable, mass market price the company has racked up over 6,000 installs of the model, with displays starring at the Democratic National Convention , as virtual air hockey tables , on NBC’s Sunday Night Football and Beijing Olympics studio, TNT’s NBA Playoffs set and more. This seems like a good time to mention the display is also capable of being matrixed in a 5 x 5 video wall — and at these prices, we can’t see why anyone wouldn’t. Of course, they could just be clearing stock to bring out the 150-inch behemoth or a more home oriented TH-103PZ800 model Stateside, so weigh your options carefully. Samsung’s 23-inch OLED TV coming in 2010, others following suit

April 29th, 2009

Given just how long we’ve been looking at prototype OLED panels at trade shows (and trade shows alone), we’re understandably skeptical about a few new claims regarding availability. For whatever it’s worth, MegaWhat.tv has reported that the display will actually be on store shelves in 2010 (yeah, that’s next year), bringing with it a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, DVI / HDMI inputs and a total depth of just 1.6 centimeters. Furthermore, it’s said to suck down 40 percent less energy compared to an equivalent LCD, but you can rest assured that you’ll pay for that luxury up front. In related news, Smarthouse is suggesting that senior Panasonic executives have said that it is currently “researching” HD OLED TV and should have one on the market within two years. Not to be a Debbie Downer or anything, but we’ll wait until we see progress at CES 2010 before getting too hopeful. Panasonic developing 1080p twin-lens P2 camcorder for native 3D captures

April 24th, 2009

Sponsors

You know that 3D bandwagon you’re still hesitant to jump on? We get the feeling that this year’s NAB show may just push you over the top. Shortly after hearing of Fujifilm’s newest P2 memory cards comes this, a conceptual camcorder in which to eventually slot ‘em in. Currently, Panasonic’s 3D Full HD Camera Recorder is merely a prototype, but it’s made clear that the company intends to bring this to market as soon as possible. Essentially, the device will boast a twin-lens system for capturing 3D footage natively in 1080p, and all of the video streams will be stored on Panny’s professional P2 cards. It’s hard to say if this would even be useful for 2D shooting on the side, but with practically every major studio at least considering (if not committing to ) 3D production, we’d say it’s a solid investment on Panasonic’s part either way. Panasonic makes school runs more cinematic with its in-dash Blu-ray player

April 22nd, 2009

Finicky kids may have their opinions about which brand of peanut butter or sugar-crusted breakfast cereal they prefer, but surely every single one of them wants HD over SD for their in-car viewing experience. Panasonic’s giving them just that, a pair of dash-mountable devices that will finally let you toss those DVDs Disney’s been sneaking in with its Blu-ray releases. First is the CN-HX3000D Windows-powered device, with a 7-inch, 1280 x 720 display offering GPS, Bluetooth, a 40GB hard drive, and iPod/iPhone compatibility. Pair that with the CY-BB1000D in-car Blu-ray player (which, sadly, is not BD-Live compatible) and bam you’ve got all the high-def Chicken Little you can handle. Mind you all this will surely come with quite a price tag when it releases this fall, and while Panny isn’t willing to say just much, isn’t keeping your little videophiles happy worth any cost? Bang & Olufsen’s 103-inch BeoVision 4-103 plasma is gorgeous, pricey

Plasma’s dying , huh? Go and tell that to Bang & Olufsen . Just in case the 50- and 65-inch versions of the BeoVision 4 HDTV weren’t expansive enough, the high-end home cinema outfitter has just pushed out news of an all new addition: the 103-inch BeoVision 4-103. If that number immediately rings a bell, here’s a cookie. The 103-inch Panasonic TH-103PF9 panel is indeed the exact one used here, but B&O has obviously spruced up the design, added an automatic rising stand and incorporated the BeoSystem 3 and the VisionClear technology that automatically adjusts colors and brightness. Oh, and it tossed in a B&O logo, which is darn near priceless. Speaking of stickers, the set should be available this July for around €100,000 ($136,220) pre-VAT. Toshiba to buy Panasonic’s shares in LCD joint venture

April 2nd, 2009

Around seven years after it was originally established, Toshiba has decided it best to stop waiting for Panasonic’s input on decisions regarding Toshiba Matsushita Display Technology Company . If all goes to plan, Toshiba — which currently owns a 60 percent stake in the joint venture — will buy out Panasonic’s 40 percent stake on April 28th. For those unaware, the venture was responsible for developing, manufacturing and selling LCDs and OLEDs, most of which were classified as “small to medium-sized.” After the share transfer is finalized, TMD will change its name to Toshiba Mobile Display Company, and according to the jointly-issued release, it’ll allow Tosh to “further accelerate decision-making and promote comprehensive restructuring of TMD’s business.” The consumer takeaway here? ” Looking to the future, TMD aims to establish OLEDs as an engine for growth and to enhance its display business in the medium- to long-term. ” Boom.
