Our friends at Engadget en Espa?ol have turned us on to some pico projecters that recently popped up on Philips’ Flickr account. We don’t have too much info, other than they are designated (in no particular order): PPX-1430, PPX-1230 and PPX-1030. And they’re really rather small. Yeah, we’re underwhelmed too. But we must report even the least breathtaking gadgets: it’s our meat and potatoes, after all. And you can bet your bubby that if Philips does relate any mind-blowing information at this year’s IFA (which is going on as we write this), we’ll let you know. Oh, you want more pictures? Looks like those German Coolpix leaks were right on the money — Nikon’s just announced the Coolpix S1100pj and the S5100. The S1100pj is a seriously hot update to the original quirky and lovable Nikon Coolpix S1000pj projector-cam: not only is it thinner and sleeker, but the projector is brighter at 14 lumens and can now beam images off a laptop over USB. The control scheme also looks to have been simplified, with a new three-inch 460,000-dot touchscreen taking over most duties and enabling a wild telestrator-style paint mode which lets you draw right on top of projected images in real-time. Camera-wise, it’s an iterative bump over the previous model: 14 megapixel sensor with 720p movie mode and ISO 6400 sensitivity, 28-140mm 5x optical zoom with five-way stabilizer, and the ability to detect faces, smiles and blinks. Perhaps best of all, MSRP has dropped $100 to $349, which actually makes it a somewhat reasonable consideration if you’re shopping higher-end cams. Yep, we definitely want to play with one — it’ll hit in a bunch of colors next month sometime. The Coolpix S5100 is a bit less interesting, slotting in between the S6000 and S4000 . Nothing too complicated here, just a 12.1 megapixel sensor with ISO 3200 sensitivity and a 720p movie mode, 5x optical zoom with four-way stabilization, and a nifty tripod-detection function that automatically tweaks shutter speed and exposure to produce blur-free images when the camera is handheld. It’ll be $179 in a bunch of colors when it hits in October — check a shot after the break, along with the full PR for both cams. P.S.- That’s both of the leaked Coolpix models — we’ve got a feeling we’ll be hearing about that D3100 DSLR rather soon as well. It’s not the first video camera to pack a built-in pico projector, but Ordro’s HDV-D350S does look to be the first camcorder with a removable pico projector. In addition to that accoutrement — which pumps out a WVGA image at 15 lumens — you’ll get full 1080p recording, a 10x optical zoom, a 3-inch touchscreen LCD, and an SD / SDHC card slot for storage. Of course, you’ll also have to pay a considerable premium over your usual 1080p camcorder from a little known manufacturer — look for this one to set you back $549. Despite the built-in pico projector and a freakish publicity stunt , Nikon’s Coolpix S1000pj camera hasn’t exactly been flying off the shelves. That said, French magazine Chasseur d’Images — a publication with good track record on product leaks — is reporting that Nikon’s cooking up a second projector camera, and this time it’ll even work as a conventional pico projector for computers. Sounds pretty swank, but according to Nikon Rumors , we’ll have to wait until the first half of August for the next batch of Coolpix cameras to come out. Hopefully it won’t be too late for our summer getaways — otherwise we’ll just have to hop on over to another hemisphere. Believe it or not, DigiLife has actually been cranking out wares in the consumer electronics space for awhile now . Trouble is, there aren’t too many people that seem to care here in the States. All that has a chance to change at IFA this Fall, as that’s where DigiLife will be revealing a price and ship date for its impending I-One e-reader / projector hybrid device. Shown this week at Computex for the first time, the multifaceted slate is billed as an e-book reader, with WiFi, a 10.4-inch LCD display and a rather sharp looking design to go along with it. But unlike every other alternative out there, this one actually has an integrated projector and multimedia player, though it’s difficult to say what the final resolution will be (we’re betting on VGA at best). Betcha never thought to project the person you’re video chatting with upside the wall, did you? On second thought, don’t answer that. BeamBox has just outed its Revolution R-2 pico projector , and while nothing much that could be termed revolutionary has happened in the world of tiny projectors as of late, the R-2 certainly has one thing going for it: it’s super bright. That’s right, the Revolution R-2 boasts a 40 lumen LCoS chip, which means it should stand out where most picos are much less — and often around 20 lumens. Other than that it will produce a 75-inch projection with a 200:1 contrast ratio, it’s got 1GB of storage plus a microSD slot, A/V inputs and a Mini USB port, plus an integrated media player. The Revolution R-2 is available now for ?250 (around $360). BeamBox Evolution R-2 — one of the brightest little guys around originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 20 May 2010 17:59:00 EST. The pico projectors just keep on coming, and now it’s time for the 3M MPro 150 to shine. It caught our eye back at CES thanks to its ability to play media, presentations, and even display spreadsheets all from internal memory — no PC required. Now that ability has been given a thorough evaluation by PicoProjector-info.com and, while the overall performance of the projector was found to be good, it didn’t quite deliver thanks to a VGA resolution. That simply didn’t push enough pixels to render much business content, and the onboard media compatibility options disappointed as well. Build quality was said to be high and image quality good, but overall this one doesn’t seem to live up to its $350 pricetag. You can see the thing in action after the break, or hit the source link for all the review details. We’re guessing that if you haven’t bought a pico projector by now it isn’t because they’re just too big , but Microvision is doing its part to help make ‘em smaller nonetheless. The company has begun initial shipments of its PicoP Laser Display Engine, found inside the Show WX , for other companies who want to make their own projectors — or rifles . The circuitry that’s half the size of the tech in competing pico projectors while still managing WVGA (848 x 480) resolution and a 5000:1 contrast ratio. No word on cost but we’re guessing there’s a discount if you buy in bulk, and shipping ought to be cheap. Why hello there, Acer. Not only does this K11 DLP pico projector look sexier than its predecessor , but it’s also been given some nice internal enhancements. Starting with display performance: the K11’s resolution remains about the same at 858 x 600, but it’s twice as bright at 200 lumens (while maintaining the same 20,000-hour lamp life) and has twice as much contrast ratio at 2,000:1. As for connectivity this machine now packs an HDMI socket (along with the usual VGA and composite AV ports) as well as an SDHC card reader and a USB port for opening music, video and picture files. Even with all these extra goodies, the K11’s only managed to gain 0.13 pounds (reaching 1.34 pounds) while sporting a smaller body. All we need now is a price, launch date, a few friends and a destination for our road trip. Oh, and some content. Update: apparently an Acer representative hinted that the K11 will be available for about €500 ($685; translated page shows “$” instead of “€”). Yikes. Anyway, vielen Dank, Felix Fdot ! Oh, you haven’t been introduced to Mr. Murkycam? He’s the darker, more mysterious cousin of Mr. Blurrycam ; his services occasionally called upon to show off products like the new AAXA L1 laser pico projector. The device just started shipping and, according to the video, this is the first one captured in the wild. AAXA promises perfect focus on any surface, even curved ones, and while it’s a bit difficult to tell from the video we’ve embedded below it certainly looks to do a decent job. The L1 also features built-in media player functionality and even includes a 2GB thumb drive for you to load up with whatever you like before slotting it in the side. Photo and PowerPoint performance seems a bit mediocre, and sadly the video doesn’t show the thing playing any footage, but it does look like it works as advertised — as it should for that $599 MSRP. It was fun while it lasted, but Sanwa’s once $119 pico projector is now selling for no less than $179, which means that it’s no longer able to hold the prestigious title of “world’s cheapest pico projector.” As far as we can tell, that honor now belongs to this impressively boxy model known only as the “Mini USB 2.0 LED Projector w/Tripod,” which is now available at various online retailers for $159.99. Specs are as basic as can be, of course — but, hey, it comes with a tripod. As Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets go, LG’s eXpo on AT&T is very near the cream of the crop — it’s got Snapdragon and a biometric scanner, after all — but we all know that the spec sheet doesn’t tell the whole story with this one. Really, people care about this phone because of the trick $179 pico projector that you can optionally bolt underneath. Besides being insanely cool, the concept makes sense considering the eXpo’s target demographic — business users probably want to be able to share documents and PowerPoints on the go, right? We’re kind of fans of pico projectors around here, even if finding a way to justify spending big cash on them is occasionally a little hard. Sanwa’s just unleashed a cheap little pico that may just be worth the money. There’s nothing terribly standout about the Sanwa 400 PRJ-001 — a Himax LCoS projector with a 640 x 480 resolution, USB connectivity and the little guy weighs in at only 85 grams. The best part of the story here, is of course, the price — for $119, well, maybe we’ll grab two. We can’t be sure it’s the cheapest pocket projector in the history of micro projecting, but it’s pretty close. Hit up the source link to buy one for yourself. You didn’t think CES was over, did you? Saving a true gamer’s delight for last, we went along to meet with Microvision’s reps today and were introduced to its PicoP laser projector and gun gaming peripheral . The projection tech employed here is unique, as each pixel (848 x 480 resolution) is itself an RGB laser reflecting off a mirror which flips 60 times a second. What that results in is a permanently focused projection, no matter how much you wiggle, jiggle or maneuver the projector. The whole thing fits within 6cc and was designed to be embedded into phones. We snapped a few pics of the standalone projector and then moved on to the rifle gaming controller. Come along after the break to check out our hell-raising skills on video, as well as some more in-depth impressions of the hardware. Looks like the world’s still got appetite for some more pico projectors , as Favi ’s releasing a pair some time between late February and early March for prices yet unknown. First is the RIOLED-Q (pictured) which sports a pretty 800 x 600 native resolution at 50 lumens — supposedly the best brightness in class (like the Optoma PK301 ), along with built-in SD / MMC card reader, battery, three-watt stereo speaker and an ever-so-handy digital keystone correction. Joining the party is the smaller RIOLED-V which is shy about its display specification, but proudly packs a card reader and WiFi to cater its various web apps for YouTube, Flickr, Picasa, Yahoo News, Weather, Email, Internet Radio and web browser. We’ve already seen a pico projector here at CES that packs 1GB of internal storage , but Syndiant and Foryou have now finally announced a new device that has an upgrade where it really counts: resolution. Unfortunately, it’s still just a prototype, and there’s no word about pricing or availability, but the projector does use Syndiant’s 1,024 x 600 resolution SYL2061 panel (pictured at right), and it still fits in a shirt pocket. Nothing else much in the way of details just yet, but this one’s definitely the pico projector to beat when it comes to pumping out pixels. You’ll be familiar with the LG eXpo and its specs already — which include a slideout QWERTY keyboard and 1GHz Snapdragon under the hood — but we thought we’d go try the handset out for ourselves and tell you what we thought. Construction on this little machine was plenty sturdy to withstand the bumps associated with its unusual shape, while the keyboard slider mechanism had a reassuring feel to it. On the whole our impression was that you’ve got a middle of the road modern phone with a sales hook that depends on just how into projecting your images you are. Trust us, the sharp and large picture you may hope for from this device is possible only in very limited circumstances — even a moonlit night seems likely to mess with your enjoyment of the attached pico projector’s output. For the most part, you’ll have to be content with either watching 14-inch movies with the curtains drawn, or projecting ill-defined naughty pictures on the whiteboard while the teacher isn’t looking. Even if neither of those sounds like your kind of thing, feel welcome to peruse the hands-on gallery below. They promised us a device in 2010 and sure enough, Light Blue Optics just announced Light Touch. As the name implies, LBO’s product is a laser projector that turns any flat surface into an auto-focused and image-adjusted 10-inch touchscreen with WVGA resolution thanks to its laser- (not LED) based pico projection engine dubbed HLP (holographic laser projection) and infrared touch-sensing system. Light Touch runs Adobe Flash Lite 3.1 and includes WiFi and Bluetooth radios, 2GB of on-board storage (with microSD slot for up to 32GB more), and a battery capable of about 2-hours worth of runtime. We’ll be getting up close and personal with the mini projector here at CES so until then, feast your eyes on the simulated demo and usage scenarios after the break.
