We’ve definitely seen new Nikon gear leak in the foreign press before, and it looks like the cycle continues: that rumored Nikon D3100 SLR just made an appearance in the pages of Germany’s Foto Digital magazine, along with an updated Coolpx S1100pj projector-cam and a new Coolpix S5100. The D3100 is obviously the main attraction — it has a 14 megapixel sensor with up to ISO 12800 sensitivity, a new 1080p video mode, and an improved processor and autofocus system, for a body-only price of €650 ($831). Not bad — although we don’t know if it has that rumored continuous autofocus mode for video yet. We don’t know nearly as much about the new Coolpix S1100pj, except that it’ll retain the projector from the S1000pj , come in colors and add a touchscreen and remote control the mix; the Coolpix S5100 is less of a mystery, with a 12 megapixel sensor and a 28-140mm zoom lens pegged in the magazine. Of course, none of this is officially official yet, but we’d imagine we’ll be hearing more real soon — stay tuned. It’s not the first video camera to pack a built-in pico projector, but Ordro’s HDV-D350S does look to be the first camcorder with a removable pico projector. In addition to that accoutrement — which pumps out a WVGA image at 15 lumens — you’ll get full 1080p recording, a 10x optical zoom, a 3-inch touchscreen LCD, and an SD / SDHC card slot for storage. Of course, you’ll also have to pay a considerable premium over your usual 1080p camcorder from a little known manufacturer — look for this one to set you back $549. Despite the built-in pico projector and a freakish publicity stunt , Nikon’s Coolpix S1000pj camera hasn’t exactly been flying off the shelves. That said, French magazine Chasseur d’Images — a publication with good track record on product leaks — is reporting that Nikon’s cooking up a second projector camera, and this time it’ll even work as a conventional pico projector for computers. Sounds pretty swank, but according to Nikon Rumors , we’ll have to wait until the first half of August for the next batch of Coolpix cameras to come out. Hopefully it won’t be too late for our summer getaways — otherwise we’ll just have to hop on over to another hemisphere. Still looking for an excuse to buy a pico projector ? We might just have the perfect thing. LuminAR, a project of MIT student Natan Linder, is something like a sentient desk lamp of the sort that will make any dedicated Pixar fan’s heart skip a beat. It can follow a user’s actions, using a camera to detect gestures and beam information down to augment whichever reality they’re currently experiencing. Interestingly, the whole thing is built into a bulb socket, meaning it could be thrown into any lamp you like — if you can do without the whole automatic motion aspect. It’s based on what looks to be a Microsoft Lifecam Show webcam and what is certainly a Microvision Show WX projector, which is both focus and care free. There’s a demo video after the break but, sadly, little hope that this thing will be replacing your current desktop lamp any time soon. Samsung ’s just rolled out its first ever pico projector , the SP-H03. The little thing boasts 1GB of internal memory, a microSD slot, and projects WVGA video at 30 lumens, a 1 watt speaker, and supports both open and proprietary codecs. It’s got a battery life of about two hours and weighs in a 6 ounces. Other than that, it’s a pretty standard looking pico affair, and it’s available now for $300. BeamBox has just outed its Revolution R-2 pico projector , and while nothing much that could be termed revolutionary has happened in the world of tiny projectors as of late, the R-2 certainly has one thing going for it: it’s super bright. That’s right, the Revolution R-2 boasts a 40 lumen LCoS chip, which means it should stand out where most picos are much less — and often around 20 lumens. Other than that it will produce a 75-inch projection with a 200:1 contrast ratio, it’s got 1GB of storage plus a microSD slot, A/V inputs and a Mini USB port, plus an integrated media player. As if Sony’s PlayStation Move , Nintendo’s Wii and Microsoft’s Project Natal weren’t evidence enough, we’re here to inform you that motion gaming is here to stay… for awhile, anyway. One area where it hasn’t quite taken over in full force is the mobile sector, but Dave & Adie are angling to change that. Their Moject (short for Motion Projection) project has led to a prototype device that straps onto an iPhone, providing a pico projector for the phone and using the handset’s internal sensors to recognize movements. A demo title has also been crafted to demonstrate how it all works, and while the iPhone is obviously just the beginning of where this could go, you owe it to yourself to give the video (hosted just after the break) a look. And the jams aren’t too harsh on the ears, either. The pico projectors just keep on coming, and now it’s time for the 3M MPro 150 to shine. It caught our eye back at CES thanks to its ability to play media, presentations, and even display spreadsheets all from internal memory — no PC required. Now that ability has been given a thorough evaluation by PicoProjector-info.com and, while the overall performance of the projector was found to be good, it didn’t quite deliver thanks to a VGA resolution. That simply didn’t push enough pixels to render much business content, and the onboard media compatibility options disappointed as well. Build quality was said to be high and image quality good, but overall this one doesn’t seem to live up to its $350 pricetag. You can see the thing in action after the break, or hit the source link for all the review details. They’re easily missed about the mass of Apple patent applications revealed each year, but the company has filed a few regarding projectors (pico projectors, specifically), and the latest one to be published has now offered a few more details on how they might all fit together. That application boasts the rather broad title of “projector system and methods,” and basically describes a setup that would let various devices (including a laptop or phone) remotely interact with a projector, which could itself be built into a device like a phone. To do that, each device in question would be equipped with a sensor of some sort that would be able to receive data from the projector, and even allow you to do fairly advanced things like calibrate the projector remotely. The application further goes on to detail how the system could accommodate multiple clients — letting folks overlay multiple images on a single presentation, for example — and it would apparently be able to receive and broadcast audio between multiple clients as well. Does this mean you’ll soon be able to control your pico projector-equipped iPhone from your sensor-equipped MacBook? Probably not, but it may not be quite as far fetched as some of Apple’s other patent applications . Oh, you haven’t been introduced to Mr. Murkycam? He’s the darker, more mysterious cousin of Mr. Blurrycam ; his services occasionally called upon to show off products like the new AAXA L1 laser pico projector. The device just started shipping and, according to the video, this is the first one captured in the wild. AAXA promises perfect focus on any surface, even curved ones, and while it’s a bit difficult to tell from the video we’ve embedded below it certainly looks to do a decent job. The L1 also features built-in media player functionality and even includes a 2GB thumb drive for you to load up with whatever you like before slotting it in the side. Photo and PowerPoint performance seems a bit mediocre, and sadly the video doesn’t show the thing playing any footage, but it does look like it works as advertised — as it should for that $599 MSRP. We didn’t think it could be done, but the fine folks at Texas Instruments have just unleashed a tiny, tiny beast in their all new DLP pico chipset. The nHD DLP chipset, as it’s known, boasts 640×360 resolution, a contrast ratio of “better than” 1,000:1, RGB LED wide color gamut (which should more faithfully reproduce colors), a new, and a lower powered processor. Overall, the package is 20 percent thinner and 50 percent lighter than the current generation DLP chipset. We hear the chipset should be available in the second quarter of 2010. The full press release is after the break. It was fun while it lasted, but Sanwa’s once $119 pico projector is now selling for no less than $179, which means that it’s no longer able to hold the prestigious title of “world’s cheapest pico projector.” As far as we can tell, that honor now belongs to this impressively boxy model known only as the “Mini USB 2.0 LED Projector w/Tripod,” which is now available at various online retailers for $159.99. Specs are as basic as can be, of course — but, hey, it comes with a tripod. Nikon’s Coolpix S1000pj camera/pico projector combo hasn’t exactly taken the world by storm, but we’re guessing it took a little while before Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups became a global phenomenon, too. If reports from DigiTimes prove to be true, Sony wants to be front and center to meet the eventual demand for such cameras, working with Opus Microsystems to license its laser-based scanning mirror chips, projector tech that sounds similar to Microvision’s Show WX . Word is that other camera manufacturers are working with Texas Instruments for the development of their own pico-packing cams, relying on TI’s DLP-based tech found in the the S1000pj and a variety of other devices . Which will rule the roost? We’ll take lasers over LEDs any day of the week. We caught a quick glimpse of 3M’s MPro150 at CES a few weeks back , and while the performance of this pico projector didn’t exactly blow our minds, we were quite intrigued by its ability to give PowerPoint presentations without a laptop or, indeed, any wires at all — assuming your speech will be through before the thing’s 90 minute battery is. It has 1GB of internal memory, plenty for slideshows filled with the most tacky of sound effects, and 3M even includes a 2GB microSD card to boot. But, for the $395 asking price, we’re thinking that was the least it could do. Update : Seems someone jumped the gun a bit, and 3M has clarified that shipments have yet to begin. Should be soon, though. 3M’s MPro150 pico projector now shipping to highly-mobile presenters everywhere (update: not quite yet!) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 19 Jan 2010 10:34:00 EST. You didn’t think CES was over, did you? Saving a true gamer’s delight for last, we went along to meet with Microvision’s reps today and were introduced to its PicoP laser projector and gun gaming peripheral . The projection tech employed here is unique, as each pixel (848 x 480 resolution) is itself an RGB laser reflecting off a mirror which flips 60 times a second. What that results in is a permanently focused projection, no matter how much you wiggle, jiggle or maneuver the projector. The whole thing fits within 6cc and was designed to be embedded into phones. We snapped a few pics of the standalone projector and then moved on to the rifle gaming controller. Come along after the break to check out our hell-raising skills on video, as well as some more in-depth impressions of the hardware. Looks like the world’s still got appetite for some more pico projectors , as Favi ’s releasing a pair some time between late February and early March for prices yet unknown. First is the RIOLED-Q (pictured) which sports a pretty 800 x 600 native resolution at 50 lumens — supposedly the best brightness in class (like the Optoma PK301 ), along with built-in SD / MMC card reader, battery, three-watt stereo speaker and an ever-so-handy digital keystone correction. Joining the party is the smaller RIOLED-V which is shy about its display specification, but proudly packs a card reader and WiFi to cater its various web apps for YouTube, Flickr, Picasa, Yahoo News, Weather, Email, Internet Radio and web browser. You’ll be familiar with the LG eXpo and its specs already — which include a slideout QWERTY keyboard and 1GHz Snapdragon under the hood — but we thought we’d go try the handset out for ourselves and tell you what we thought. Construction on this little machine was plenty sturdy to withstand the bumps associated with its unusual shape, while the keyboard slider mechanism had a reassuring feel to it. On the whole our impression was that you’ve got a middle of the road modern phone with a sales hook that depends on just how into projecting your images you are. Trust us, the sharp and large picture you may hope for from this device is possible only in very limited circumstances — even a moonlit night seems likely to mess with your enjoyment of the attached pico projector’s output. For the most part, you’ll have to be content with either watching 14-inch movies with the curtains drawn, or projecting ill-defined naughty pictures on the whiteboard while the teacher isn’t looking. Even if neither of those sounds like your kind of thing, feel welcome to peruse the hands-on gallery below.
