AAXA L1 laser pico projector hands-on by Mr. Murkycam (video)

March 1st, 2010

Oh, you haven’t been introduced to Mr. Murkycam? He’s the darker, more mysterious cousin of Mr. Blurrycam ; his services occasionally called upon to show off products like the new AAXA L1 laser pico projector. The device just started shipping and, according to the video, this is the first one captured in the wild. AAXA promises perfect focus on any surface, even curved ones, and while it’s a bit difficult to tell from the video we’ve embedded below it certainly looks to do a decent job. The L1 also features built-in media player functionality and even includes a 2GB thumb drive for you to load up with whatever you like before slotting it in the side. Photo and PowerPoint performance seems a bit mediocre, and sadly the video doesn’t show the thing playing any footage, but it does look like it works as advertised — as it should for that $599 MSRP. Texas Instruments unleashes new nHD DLP chipset, now with more pico

February 16th, 2010

We didn’t think it could be done, but the fine folks at Texas Instruments have just unleashed a tiny, tiny beast in their all new DLP pico chipset. The nHD DLP chipset, as it’s known, boasts 640×360 resolution, a contrast ratio of “better than” 1,000:1, RGB LED wide color gamut (which should more faithfully reproduce colors), a new, and a lower powered processor. Overall, the package is 20 percent thinner and 50 percent lighter than the current generation DLP chipset. We hear the chipset should be available in the second quarter of 2010. The full press release is after the break. No-name Mini USB pico projector now the cheapest you can buy

February 11th, 2010

It was fun while it lasted, but Sanwa’s once $119 pico projector is now selling for no less than $179, which means that it’s no longer able to hold the prestigious title of “world’s cheapest pico projector.” As far as we can tell, that honor now belongs to this impressively boxy model known only as the “Mini USB 2.0 LED Projector w/Tripod,” which is now available at various online retailers for $159.99. Specs are as basic as can be, of course — but, hey, it comes with a tripod. Sony working to wedge laser-based pico projectors into its compact cameras?

February 4th, 2010

Nikon’s Coolpix S1000pj camera/pico projector combo hasn’t exactly taken the world by storm, but we’re guessing it took a little while before Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups became a global phenomenon, too. If reports from DigiTimes prove to be true, Sony wants to be front and center to meet the eventual demand for such cameras, working with Opus Microsystems to license its -based scanning mirror chips, projector tech that sounds similar to Microvision’s Show WX . Word is that other camera manufacturers are working with Texas Instruments for the development of their own pico-packing cams, relying on TI’s DLP-based tech found in the the S1000pj and a variety of other devices . Which will rule the roost? We’ll take lasers over LEDs any day of the week. 3M’s MPro150 pico projector now shipping to highly-mobile presenters everywhere (update: not quite yet!)

January 20th, 2010

We caught a quick glimpse of 3M’s MPro150 at CES a few weeks back , and while the performance of this didn’t exactly blow our minds, we were quite intrigued by its ability to give PowerPoint presentations without a laptop or, indeed, any wires at all — assuming your speech will be through before the thing’s 90 minute battery is. It has 1GB of internal memory, plenty for slideshows filled with the most tacky of sound effects, and 3M even includes a 2GB microSD card to boot. But, for the $395 asking price, we’re thinking that was the least it could do. Update : Seems someone jumped the gun a bit, and 3M has clarified that shipments have yet to begin. Should be soon, though. 3M’s MPro150 now shipping to highly-mobile presenters everywhere (update: not quite yet!) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 19 Jan 2010 10:34:00 EST. Microvision laser projection gun hands-on

January 13th, 2010

Sponsors

You didn’t think CES was over, did you? Saving a true gamer’s delight for last, we went along to meet with ’s reps today and were introduced to its PicoP laser projector and gun gaming peripheral . The projection tech employed here is unique, as each pixel (848 x 480 resolution) is itself an RGB laser reflecting off a mirror which flips 60 times a second. What that results in is a permanently focused projection, no matter how much you wiggle, jiggle or maneuver the projector. The whole thing fits within 6cc and was designed to be embedded into phones. We snapped a few pics of the standalone projector and then moved on to the rifle gaming controller. Come along after the break to check out our hell-raising skills on video, as well as some more in-depth impressions of the hardware. Favi RIOLED-Q and RIOLED-V pico projectors launched: the future is bright, wireless

January 11th, 2010

Looks like the world’s still got appetite for some more pico projectors , as Favi ’s releasing a pair some time between late February and early March for prices yet unknown. First is the RIOLED-Q (pictured) which sports a pretty 800 x 600 native resolution at 50 lumens — supposedly the best brightness in class (like the Optoma PK301 ), along with built-in SD / MMC card reader, battery, three-watt stereo speaker and an ever-so-handy digital keystone correction. Joining the party is the smaller RIOLED-V which is shy about its display specification, but proudly packs a card reader and WiFi to cater its various web apps for YouTube, Flickr, Picasa, Yahoo News, Weather, Email, Internet Radio and web browser. Too bad it doesn’t do phone calls . LG eXpo projector hands-on

January 7th, 2010

You’ll be familiar with the LG eXpo and its specs already — which include a slideout QWERTY keyboard and 1GHz Snapdragon under the hood — but we thought we’d go try the handset out for ourselves and tell you what we thought. Construction on this little machine was plenty sturdy to withstand the bumps associated with its unusual shape, while the keyboard slider mechanism had a reassuring feel to it. On the whole our impression was that you’ve got a middle of the road modern phone with a sales hook that depends on just how into projecting your images you are. Trust us, the sharp and large picture you may hope for from this device is possible only in very limited circumstances — even a moonlit night seems likely to mess with your enjoyment of the attached pico projector’s output. For the most part, you’ll have to be content with either watching 14-inch movies with the curtains drawn, or projecting ill-defined naughty pictures on the whiteboard while the teacher isn’t looking. Even if neither of those sounds like your kind of thing, feel welcome to peruse the hands-on gallery below. Light Blue Optics unveils Light Touch: a 10-inch touchscreen pico projector based on lasers (video)

January 5th, 2010

They promised us a device in 2010 and sure enough, Light Blue Optics just announced Light Touch. As the name implies, LBO’s product is a laser projector that turns any flat surface into an auto-focused and image-adjusted 10-inch touchscreen with WVGA resolution thanks to its laser- (not LED) based pico projection engine dubbed HLP (holographic laser projection) and infrared touch-sensing system. Light Touch runs Adobe Flash Lite 3.1 and includes WiFi and Bluetooth radios, 2GB of on-board storage (with microSD slot for up to 32GB more), and a battery capable of about 2-hours worth of runtime. We’ll be getting up close and personal with the mini projector here at CES so until then, feast your eyes on the simulated demo and usage scenarios after the break. RoyalTek outs RPJ-2000 pico projector

December 28th, 2009

Taiwanese company RoyalTek’s just announced the first of what will apparently be five pico projectors it releases in 2010. The RPJ-2000 boasts 3M’s second generation LCoS chipset, VGA and NTSC / PAL inputs, and 0.5 watt speakers. The projector can project a 65-inch image at 640 x 480 resolution with 14 lumens of brightness. Disappointingly, there is no onboard storage or media player on this little guy, but we’re betting one or more of those other models RoyalTec is set to unleash probably will have those glorious extras. If you want to use this baby with a Mac, you’ll need to purchase an adapter kit which runs around $43, in addition to the $315 pricetag of the projector itself. There’s no word on sale of the RPJ-2000 outside of Taiwan as of yet, but we’ll keep you posted. RoyalTek outs RPJ-2000 pico projector originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 28 Dec 2009 12:29:00 EST. AAXA cranks up the brightness on M1 micro projector

December 16th, 2009

We can’t say with any degree of certainty that AAXA ’s recently announced M1 “micro projector” truly is the brightness of the miniaturized bunch , but it’s certainly brighter than the vast majority we’ve had the dis pleasure of seeing ourselves. Most pico projectors pack between 8 and 12 lumens , and up until now, AAXA’s own P2 was widely consider the best for using in partially lit rooms due to its 33 lumen rating. The M1 doubles up on that figure, bringing 66 lumens to the table along with a native SVGA (800 x 600) resolution, 1GB of onboard memory, an SD card reader and optional iPod, PSP and DVD cables. Said display is up for pre-order as we speak for $299, while the M1 Plus — which supports VGA and composite AV inputs — will set you back $359. LG’s projector-laden eXpo smartphone gets demonstrated on video

December 7th, 2009

The projector phone mishmash idea has been around (and even demonstrated ) for quite some time now, but only recently have we seen one of these two-pronged, hunchbacked monsters land on a major US carrier. LG’s eXpo is carrying that crown (or burden, depending on perspective), and while we’re itching to get one into our own labs for testing, we’ll happily pass along what looks to be the world’s first real good look at this handset in action. Make no mistake — the DLP-based beamer affixed on the back adds quite the bulge, but the actual video performance looks about as good as any dedicated that we’ve seen to date. Have a peek past the break to see for yourself. December 6th, 2009

We’re not sure what’s taken so long, but the Yinlips YDP800 pico projector PMP is finally available to the US, courtesy of online store Ownta. The good folks have released a demo video of the projector in action — not quite at the maximum 80-inch picture that Yinlips boasts, but hey, we’ve just about done it before on another pico projector . For around $270 including delivery this feature-packed PMP seems to give a good run for your money, especially when compared to the $299 WowWee Cinemin Swivel . No sign of any sample pictures or videos from the 1.3 megapixel camera yet, so for now just enjoy the video after the break. Optoma’s $199 PK-100 pico projector goes for the bargain crowd

October 3rd, 2009

You know what’s better than a PK-101 ? A PK-102 . You know what’s not better than a PK-101? A PK-100. Unless, of course, you’re focused solely on price. Quietly announced to hit the lower-end market, the PK-100 is described as a simplified version of its more sophisticated siblings, boasting the same DLP-based engine as well as 11 ANSI lumens of brightness and a 1,000:1 contrast ratio. Unfortunately, you’ll only find a single composite video input and a 480 x 320 native resolution, but hey, for an estimated retail price of $199, what else did you really expect? Microvision’s SHOW WX pico projector ‘out soon’

September 16th, 2009

Well, look at that — Microvision’s SHOW WX , the diminutive PicoP-based projector we first laid eyes on at Macworld some nine-plus odd months ago, is finally going to get a release. The device’s laser display system (which works by combining light from red, blue, and green lasers) boasts 10 ANSI lumens, a 5000:1 contrast ratio, WVGA (848 x 480) resolution, and never needs focusing. Optoma’s PK102 not swank enough for you? Fret not, as Technologies is also shipping its second-generation pico projector . Optoma’s PK102 pico projector slims down, boosts connectivity

September 12th, 2009

One thing’s for sure: the obsession with pico has certainly calmed since these things first hit the scene right around a year ago. Optoma’s PK101 was somewhat of an industry poster child, so it makes sense to see the company outing a successor in hopes of catching the interest of those who held off on adopting early . Still, the predictably titled PK102 does little to improve upon the past, boasting the same native resolution (480 x 320), a 2,000:1 contrast ratio (up from 1,000:1) and the traditional DLP engine . On the plus side, it has managed to trim down ever-so-slightly, step up to 4GB of internal memory and add a few new connectivity options including a composite video input and a universal port capable of receiving VGA and component video signals. Best of all, the PK102 is available now for just $229, which pales in comparison to the $430 or so it took to snag the PK101 on launch day. Yinlips Projector PMP is a PMP with a projector

August 19th, 2009

You might not know this, but your portable media player is “shackling” you down with its shockingly small screen. What you, and every other self-respecting technophile, need is a projector to explode your awesome digital media onto the nearest wall, flat surface, or just some guy’s shirt . Nikon popularized this projector integration madness, and now Yinlips is continuing it with the 3.5-inch Projector PMP, which claims it can beam out a humongous 80-inch picture (we’d be impressed if it can do half that) and play 64-bit games of an unspecified variety. Further info is scant right now, but we suspect you could fill in the blanks with your favorite generic Chinese PMP ’s specs and you’ll probably be pretty much spot on. You’ll know more as soon as we do.
