Sanwa’s ultra-cheap pico projector available, probably worth the money

January 18th, 2010

We’re kind of fans of pico around here, even if finding a way to justify spending big cash on them is occasionally a little hard. Sanwa’s just unleashed a cheap little pico that may just be worth the money. There’s nothing terribly standout about the Sanwa 400 PRJ-001 — a Himax LCoS projector with a 640 x 480 resolution, USB connectivity and the little guy weighs in at only 85 grams. The best part of the story here, is of course, the price — for $119, well, maybe we’ll grab two. We can’t be sure it’s the cheapest pocket projector in the history of micro projecting, but it’s pretty close. Hit up the source link to buy one for yourself. AAXA cranks up the brightness on M1 micro projector

December 16th, 2009

We can’t say with any degree of certainty that AAXA ’s recently announced M1 “micro projector” truly is the brightness of the miniaturized bunch , but it’s certainly brighter than the vast majority we’ve had the dis pleasure of seeing ourselves. Most pico projectors pack between 8 and 12 lumens , and up until now, AAXA’s own P2 was widely consider the best for using in partially lit rooms due to its 33 lumen rating. The M1 doubles up on that figure, bringing 66 lumens to the table along with a native SVGA (800 x 600) resolution, 1GB of onboard memory, an SD card reader and optional iPod, PSP and DVD cables. Said display is up for pre-order as we speak for $299, while the M1 Plus — which supports VGA and composite AV inputs — will set you back $359. October 17th, 2009

The world needs another VGA pico about like it needs another ton of plastic goop swirling in the Pacific, but thanks to FPS, that’s exactly what we’re getting. (The former, just so we’re clear.) The LCoS-based beamer puts out an image between 5- and 66-inches and packs a native resolution of 640 x 360; there’s a composite input, stereo output, USB socket and a microSD expansion slot. You’ll also find a one-watt internal speaker and a 2,500mAh battery for projecting on the go, while most every file format you can think of is supported. If, for whatever reason, you’ve found yourself overcome with want (and you can’t hold off for Microvision’s laser-based SHOW WX ), it’s available to purchase right now for $219. AAXA ups the ante with SVGA P2 pico projector

July 31st, 2009

Sponsors

While it’s probably safe to say that the rush of pico projectors has slowed to a trickle, that’s not stopping a few of the early entrants from dishing out new and improved models as the second wave builds. AAXA, the outfit responsible for serving up the pint-sized P1 back in February, is demonstrating exactly what a hasty refresh cycle looks like by dishing out the higher-res P2 just a few months later. The LCoS-based pico packs an SVGA (800 x 600) resolution, a 33 lumen LED light source, 1GB of onboard memory, a microSD card reader and even a built-in battery good for around 35 minutes of beaming (or in other terms, nearly two full episodes of Entourage) . The device checks in at just 4.3- x 2.3- x 1-inches and sports a VGA input, 3.5mm headphone output and a mini USB socket to boot. Feel free to pre-order yours now for $349 — or, you know, wait for a 720p model. Samsung’s P410M pocket projector is just a little bit better

June 23rd, 2009

Samsung’s looking to update its original P400 imager with the P410m. Other than pumping out 170 lumens off a 30,000 hour LED to the P400’s 151 lumens, the P410M looks like the same 800 x 600 pixel DLP beamer with 1,000:1 contrast first spotted at CES back in January 2008 . But hey, brighter is better especially in this milquetoast-class of ultra-portable . Researchers ditch DLP, develop OLED panel-based mini projector

June 11th, 2009

Looking for a way to differentiate among the ever-expanding niche of pocket projectors , researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering (IOF) of Germany are working on an OLED panel-based mini projector, using static optical systems and not the usual reflective system ? la DLP. Currently being shown at SID Display Week 2009, the decidedly green picture (seems to be the norm with OLED prototypes these days) forms via a 6-inch VGA screen from 30 to 50 centimeters away, and the machine itself takes up just about ten cubic centimeters of space. Despite all the faith, there’s still the rather nasty problem of luminance, which the scientists estimate needs to be about four or five times as bright as current levels — but hey, you gotta start somewhere, right? Teen invents pen-sized pico projector while your kid’s busy beating up honor roll students

June 3rd, 2009

Life can sure be confusing for a teenager in this fast-paced techno-world we live in. Without the proper guidance, a kid could find himself unplugging someone’s life support , or going to jail for borrowing the neighbor’s WiFi . Hell, if old man General Tommy Franks (retired) has his way you won’t even be able to hang out behind the Safeway and enjoy a six pack with your fellow juvenile delinquents without being tracked via GPS! So it warms our hearts when we do hear of a youngster that’s bucked the odds and done something constructive. For example, a 13-year-old named David Baker has received a patent for his Light Beam Delivery System, a pico projector that fits in a pen casing, and works by combining three RGB lasers with an optics assembly that creates a light ray that is then shined through a rotating disk to the screen. “When the light goes through the lenses,” he explains, “they take each light pixel and shine it onto a screen or wall. The lenses run back and forth until it fills the screen. This process repeats 30 times per second to make it appear as though you’re looking at a solid image and not a series of pixels, and you have the image projected.” And where did he find the inspiration for all of this? “I was sitting in church thinking about how to make projectors easier to handle and I just thought of it,” he says. Here’s to daydreaming during mass! DigiLife DDV-JF1 pocket cam shoots HD, packs its own projector

June 3rd, 2009

Another wild one from the surreal landscape of Computex. DigiLife’s new DDV-JF1 camera bears much resemblance to most mini camcorders, but while it’s perfectly content to shoot 720p footage and show it off on its 2.5-inch LCD, things really start to get wild when you notice that there’s a 640 x 360 pico projector built right into the thing. No word on price or when to expect this thing to show up in your local Dal?-ist electronics shop. Adapt MPJ-101 pico projector: tiny, cute, available

April 7th, 2009

Go ahead, you can admit it: you’re really, really into picos — the best of us are. Adapt’s update to its pocket projector , the MPJ-101 — which is nearly identical to the previous model — shouldn’t fill us with joy, but it does. This little (125 x 55 x 23 mm) monster’s got 1GB of built in memory, an SD slot, and two .5 watt speakers. It projects up to 10 lumens of brightness at a resolution of 640?480 from around 6 to 50 feet. All this excitement doesn’t come cheap, though — expect to shell out about a thousand bucks for this teeny bundle of joy. Oh boy. Acer K10 pocket projector finally lands in the UK

April 1st, 2009

Acer announced its K10 pocket projector way back in December, but it looks like it’s just now finally landed in the UK, and unfortunately received a bit of a price hike in the process. Now retailing for just over ?400 (or $560, roughly a $100 increase), the SVGA projector otherwise seems to have remained unchanged since its debut, with it still promising an impressive 20,000 hour lamp life, and offering up 100 ANSI lumens of brightness, a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, and a projected image size up to 60 inches. As you can see, it’s also not quite able to join the ranks of pico projectors , though its specs certainly beat out most of its smaller cousins. Sanyo goes wireless with new line of projectors

March 30th, 2009

Still haven’t found a wireless that meets your needs? Then you may want to consider one of Sanyo’s new LP-XU355 or LP-XU305 models, which each pack a standard XGA resolution and a new “Simple Wireless Setting” that lets you use an included USB drive to easily network with any computer. Otherwise, you can expect to get 3,000 or 3,500 ANSI lumens of brightness, a single 7W speaker in each, a wireless remote, and a full range of inputs, including a single HDCP-compliant DVI port. If you don’t mind being tethered, you can also opt for Sanyo’s new non-wireless LP-XU350, LP-XU300, LP-XU301, or LP-WXU300 models, which are each more or less similar to their WiFi counterparts, with the exception of the LP-WXU300, which ups the resolution to 1280 x 800. No word on a release ’round here just yet, but those in Japan can apparently look for the first of the lot (including the two wireless models) to roll out in May, with the remainder trickling out over the course of June and July. Two of Samsung’s smallest beamers just got prices and release dates, but sadly, neither are in US dollars. The MBP200 pico projector will reportedly ship this May across the pond for €499 ($637), while the i7410 (more commonly referred to as the ) will hit during the summertime for a price still to be determined. Video: Syndiant demonstrates its own prototype pico projector

March 29th, 2009

At this point, the world needs another pico projector like it needs another glacier to suddenly and spontaneously melt, but we suppose the competition ain’t bad for those actually in the market for one. A relative unknown to the pocket PJ market, Syndiant has emerged from out of nowhere to showcase its very own engineering prototype. It’s so beta that it doesn’t even boast a codename, but you can hit play above to check out what it’s got going on. Maybe we’re just jaded, but we’d love for the quantity of these to slow and the native resolutions to grow — please, tell us we aren’t alone. Forever Plus finally takes a pico projector to 720p

March 29th, 2009

Well, would you look at that! It’s not 3M, Dell, Toshiba or any other mega-corp taking the totally tired from lackluster to 720p — oh no, it’s, um, Forever Plus . Said beamer has been around the block a time or two, but given the native 1,280 x 768 native resolution, we couldn’t help but take notice. Reportedly, the 0.49- x 0.59- x 0.19-inch box outputs via HDMI and packs a lamp life of 30,000 hours, but we definitely have serious doubts about the quality.
